Lyrics:
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
You were talking so brave and so sweet
Givin' me head on the unmade bed
While the limousines wait in the street
Those were the reasons, that was New York
We were runnin' for the money and the flesh
And that was called love for the workers in song
Probably still is for those of them left
Yeah, but you got away, didn't you babe?
You just turned your back on the crowd
When you got away, I never once heard you say
I need you
I don't need you
I need you
I don't need you
And all of that jivin' around
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
You were famous, your heart was a legend
You told me again, you preferred handsome men
But for me you would make an exception
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
Who are oppressed by the figures of beauty
You fixed yourself, you said "Well nevermind
We are ugly but we have the music"
And then you got away didn't you babe?
You just turned your back on the crowd
When you got away I never once heard you say
I need you
I don't need you
I need you
I don't need you
And all of that jivin' around
I don't mean to suggest
That I loved you the best
I can't keep track of each fallen robin
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
That's all, I don't think of you that often

The first great love of my life was not considered handsome, but I thought he was incredibly sexy with his passion and stringent adherence to justice. He was a punk rocker, and respected me and my boundaries. He set me up to expect respect in all future relationships. And for that, my current husband and children also respect him. There are more important things than physical attraction that safe people of value recognize and admire.

I had studied ancient Greek lyric poetry in college, and when I read Leonard Cohen's first poetry book "The Spice-Box of Earth" it truly reminded me of that wonderful, classic poetry in the lyricism and combination of complex emotions and simplicity expressed so briefly but intensely. He has continued this theme throughout his musical career- the guy was familiar with lyrics as an art and continued this trend throughout his musical career. I am actually a serious student of poetry and a professional published poet. What exactly does the previous commenter find un lyrical about Cohen's poetry and lyrics? Can he or she give an example of something in popular music that is more lyrical, and why? I'm actually curious.

He was a natural and straight through man, he was a brave man for confronting the dark side of humanity and embrace it all alone for all his listeners and criticise the world as he know and see with the eyes of an artist.. He wasnt a saint he was showing us we are all celestic creatures nonethless we are saint or not. That we, human beings are each others Dreams and nightmares; hopes and despair. We only achieve redemption and salvation all together demolishing every wall between everyone He didnt try to be consistent and politically correct more than he have tried to be sincere and upfront. He told his own history searched for his roots and question his existence but more than anything he told this age's story, our story, no matter what race or background, he told the story of modern peoples lonelyiness and guilt and many more, fight the ghosts away with his broken sword Well, rest in peace old man. May poppies Bloom on your grave and fly through to sea.. And thanks for the dance.. Thanks a lot

Cohen said when he introduced the song that was in the lobby of the Chelsea Hotel, where a lot of musicians stayed in those days (think "Chelsea Morning by Joni Mitchell), when he saw a woman who seemed to be looking for someone. He asked her if he could help and she told him she was looking for Kris Kristofferson. He told her, Well, I'm Kris Kristofferson. Of course she knew he wasn't because she and Kris already had a thing going, but they spent the evening talking and would up spending the night together. After Joplin died, Kristofferson also wrote a song about Janis called "Black and Blue." Very sad.

The sincere compassion, respect and non judgement he has for Janis Joplin is in stark contrast to a Christian book I saw in my teens which featured the most unflattering photo imaginable of Janis singing along with the caption "pity the microphone". And those people actually think they are the moral ones. Leonard Cohen actually had a heart.

@@stylianosisaakidis3565His confession is right here in this song: "I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best I can't keep track of each fallen robin" And yet, I wouldn't call him a womanizer. He was an artist, and it's just how it is for artists since forever. That whole generation of folk artists was hooking up with each other, and then writing songs about each other after the inevitable breakup. They were drawn to each other's minds. If you are capable of writing songs like this, you'll fall hard for a kindred spirit. Would you call Joni Mitchell a "manizer"? I think not.
