Such a unique voice. I love it! I usually only watch Dimaah reactions, Hua Chenyu, Ren... I saw this, and had to watch. ❤

Cohen was inspired to write this song by something unimaginably cruel and tragic -- how the Nazis in death camps forced Jewish musicians to perform as other Jews were march into the gas chambers. Hence, the reference to "burning violins." The end of love was a metaphor for the end of life. Cohen also said listeners were free to take different meanings from the lyrics, as you did. May your wife's memory be a blessing.

Thank you for commenting and adding information. I had never heard this before. I don't research before reacting. Of course, when I first heard this song, there was no internet - lol! 🙂 The thought that he was referring to the Holocaust adds a whole new layer.
