Lyrics:
I knew that it was wrong
I didn't have a doubt
I was dying to get back home
And you were starting out
I said I best be moving on
You said we have all day
You smiled at me like I was young
It took my breath away
Your crazy fragrance all around
Your secrets all in view
My lost, my lost was saying found
My don't was saying do
Let's keep it on the level
When I walked away from you
I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel, too
They oughta give my heart a medal
For letting go of you (For letting go of you)
When I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel, too
Now I'm living in this temple
Where they tell you what to do
I'm old and I've had to settle
On a different point of view
I was fighting with temptation
But I didn't want to win
A man like me don't like to see
Temptation caving in
Your crazy fragrance all around
Your secrets in my view
My lost, my lost was saying found
My don't was saying do
Let's keep it on the level
When I walked away from you
I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel, too
They oughta give my heart a medal
For letting go of you
When I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel, too
They oughta give my heart a medal
For letting go of you
When I turned my back on the devil
Turned my back on the angel, too

Almost 50 years after The Songs Of Leonard Cohen his genius leaves us a priceless farewell album and departs for stranger shores. Goodbye Mr Cohen, I fell in love with your songs the first time I heard them in 1967. I am going to miss you.

You know you are not wasting your time while listening to a L.Cohen song. Poetry, philosophy, & a divine music to accompany it. One of the greatest who ever penned a song. Each word is deep and existential.

Discovered back in the days on PBS. You gave all you had as a best friend could. Daily I enjoy all your songs, interviews, etc. Loved the way you spoked, and I sure would missed any news songs; although, what you left for us is wonderful. Will continue to to listen to you forever, all in my memory. Let us know in our dreams how it is up higher level...bye, love you always..

I have been a fan of Cohen since the 1960's, and saw him in concert only a few years ago. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. His lyrics and most of his music are the best. The wisest singer around. Leonard, you were much loved and will be sorely missed

Good Gravy Leonard, you said these things well! At first I thought 'On the Level' was about the angel I'm walkin away from now cuz of ol Beelzebub swirlin bout but no, there were a few, truth tell. Yup, it's strange to be old and live in an unimagined temple, ain't it? In this life, for how many of us did you take the hit? This old world will need you yet when Judah's son comes riding and the great shofar does blow! Shalom and Blessings old Cohen, you were more of a priest and Levite than we did know!

What about his frequent breath intakes? After watching his press conference meeting, I realised it's got to do with his physical conditions....But in the song it just matches the line: "You smiled to me like I was young, and took my breath away". And, stroke of genius, the backup chorus picks it up from there and turns it into breath intakes of emotion and delight...

"I was fighting with temptation But I didn't want to win A man like me don't like to see Temptation caving in" Sums up his life, I guess; in the end, a girls's beauty was still more important than enlightenment and inner peace. Marvelous!

Christian Gasior I was far from home the night before we learned that Bowie was dead. I was alone, lonely in a foreign place and unknown to me then, I was ill. As I fell asleep I had Black Star “I can’t give it all away” on repeat and a strong sense of foreboding was in me as I slept, badly. I woke to my lovely wife calling me, in tears. She didn’t want me finding out casually in a headline. I can’t listen to Black Star, but anything by Leonard Cohen is good.
@rawsongs2443
@rawsongs2443 5 лет назад
@@mrtriple2414 People are far too invested in the lives of the manufactured "friends" (total strangers) we call "celebrities". One of the sicknesses of our culture: manufactured attachments via manipulated emotions to artificial friends/ lovers/ leaders/ idols. I know people who wept hysterically when Bowie (by no means a tragic figure, or a man in his prime) died. What will they do, then, when their actual parents/ friends die... the same thing? A sense of proportion is the last thing we can count on these days.
