Leonard Cohen was a published poet for years before he made his first LP in 1967.

I had the privilige of seeing him live in Dublin during his comeback tours, and this song in particular was just purely magical. In his first return gig in 2008 in Dublin, he was reduced to tears by the reception he received, especially when everyone started singing along to 'So Long marianne'

I am old now but I fell in love with Leonard Cohen and especially Suzanne in the summer of 1967, when I was 20

I was in old Montreal on a Leonard pilgrimage and was by the river and realized that the sun shone down like honey on our lady of the harbour was a church and not Suzanne. That's the brilliant Leonard CohenThat is the brilliance of Leonard. I have been a Cohen fan since Suzanne and saw him in Toronto a couple of years before he died, it was a dream come true.

I have heard Leonard sing this 4 times live in Concert between 1988 and 2015. Nobody does it better - nobody ever will. I first heard it in 1969.

Another real life song from Leonard. Suzanne was the wife of a friend. He was in love with her. No further explanation required.

Over the years Leonard’s voice deepened and became more raw from years of smoking and drinking . One of Canada’s greatest poets

It might be amusing to you to know that in university I took an English course solely based on Leonard Cohen's songs/poems and wrote many papers trying to analyze his work. Love that you're going through it line by line.

Leonard was a poet and a prophet. He speaks to everyone and everyone can hear him after his own fashion.

Watch his concert in London when he was 81, or so. You can see how even he had a deeper understanding of his own songs. Older people must respect what the young bring to to the world.

You're so right. Anyone can appreciate art. Your appreciation deepens as you age, but young people understand things and are moved deeply. It guides them. Art does this naturally.

Kudos. You do not need to be old to understand this music. I was in my 20s when I heard it. I'm now 70 but I bequeath this to you. I hope 20 year olds will understand this for another 100 years. Thank you for listening!

Yup, We got it at 20. I mean, look at what hubris did for Oedipus. And that's what the notion that we(I'm 64) have some sort of magical lock on Cohen that the youngsters can't comprehend is, pure hubris.

His whole First album is solid, but if you want an early Cohen song that was a big hit, you can't go wrong with Leonard Cohen - So Long Marianne, there have been a ton of covers though so I wouldn't be surprised if you know it already

Suzanne was the first Cohen song I heard on the radio. It was on a Friday night in the late 80s. I immediately had to check out his other songs - a new world opened to me. Later I saw and heard Cohen live - incredible. React to some more of his songs: Famous blue raincoat; Avalanche; One of us cannot be wrong; Ballad of the absent mare; and so many more...

I agree completely with your introduction. I’m old, but not Leonard Cohen old, but when I first started listening I was sucked right in! My favorite band is twenty one pilots, but I’m way too old to be their typical listener!

You must not be much if any younger than he was when he wrote this, so ........ When he says that her hospitality was "immaculate", he's saying in a coded way what happened - or, more significantly, did NOT happen - between them - as we've been given to understand.

You can't enjoy 'great music'. There's music you will find great and enjoy that. I never (or seldom) talk about a song or band as being 'the best' or 'worst', but talk in terms of what I like or like less. In other words, it's all relative to your taste. Don't let this get in the way of your enjoyment, mind.

I'm the same. Music, John Wayne movies, literature, westerns. Of my favorites in any of it, they can be supplanted by another in the group just because of the time of day, what I had for breakfast, the weather...Or what I'm watching, listening to, or reading at that particular moment.

I've always thought of "Suzanne" as likened to Susan Sarandon's Annie Savoy from "Bull Durham". As far as the line "...he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone", it's a theme that *I* repeatedly find in Cohen's lyrics, which seems to be a lamentation of the wisdom of the Bible being displaced and bastardized to serve an agenda.
