Leonard Maltin Interviews George Lucas, Part 3: Return of the Jedi

In part three of film critic Leonard Maltin's interview with Star Wars creator George Lucas, the two discuss the final film of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi.
Lucas says that Return of the Jedi mostly matched his original vision, except that Ewoks replaced Wookiees. He wanted a primitive species to battle the Empire, and he'd already established Chewbacca as being mechanically sophisticated in A New Hope, which disqualified Wookiees. This led to the creation of the Rebels' new "furry companions." (In fact, the name Ewok is derived from Wookiee.)
Jabba the Hutt was originally meant to be in the first film, but time prevented his inclusion. Lucas wanted a "big, repulsive character," and he finally made his debut in Return of the Jedi.
When asked about the film's environments, Lucas says he tries to include three different types of environments in a movie. Acknowledging he's bound to earthly environments, Lucas set much of the picture in the forest, which hadn't been seen yet in Star Wars. Colors also play a thematic role: Imperial settings and outfits are colorless, Rebel settings and costumes are earth tones.
In discussing the prequels (Lucas was writing them at the time of this interview), he says it takes a long time to prep them. They're based on the backstory he had outlined at the beginning -- where Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke and Leia come from. He also reveals that he is considering a return to directing...

I liked how they tied up how Darth Vader was Luke's father, and how so many stormtroopers were already under his command (Order 66), but it wasn't as polished as it could've been. I'm no hater, I actually love this movie.

On the one hand: He should've done what he said in this interview where he'd direct Episode 1 in order to lay the groundwork then let other directors do Episodes 2 and 3 while he would function in a similar manner to the OT where he'd be a creative consultant or producer. But on the other hand: I respect the man for doing the prequels as he envisioned them. Say what you will but at the end of the day they were George's vision of these events. I personally liked the prequels but even if you don't you have to admire the amount of world-building those films did.

Unfortunately, Lucas could not find anyone who was willing to direct the prequels. No one else felt they could do it right. That is why he ended up directing them. I feel sorry for Lucas that that happened. He would have been less burdened had he not had to direct the prequels. I agree with you 100% about respecting him for his vision. I, too, like the prequels. One thing I REALLY regret, though, is that Lucas didn’t stick to his original plan for the saga or had people who would have made him. In his original outline, he had Episode 1 as a Prelude, Episodes 2-4 would have been a Clone Wars Trilogy, Episode 5 would have wrapped up that storyline and set up the Original Trilogy, which would have been Episodes 6-8. It would have given proper time to explore the Clone Wars and plot points from AOTC and ROTS had there been 4 movies between TPM and ANH.

In the early 90s it was cool to see the resurgence of interest in Star Wars. I think the PC and SNES games stirred alot of interest and put a little pressure on Lucas to get going on the prequels.

@SoraMatt
@SoraMatt 10 лет назад
*yawn* Phantom Menace isn't really as bad as the butthurt, cynical, angry, and stupid make it out to be. Not as great as the other 5 films or the Clone Wars, but really not that bad of a flick.
@SkarloeyRailway01
@SkarloeyRailway01 10 лет назад
I agree actually. I think the disappointment factor was what really killed it for people. If you ignore some of the really annoying stuff (Jar Jar), it's not all that bad! Some good action, great effects, but it does suffer a weak story.
@SoraMatt
@SoraMatt 10 лет назад
SkarloeyRailway01 oh without a doubt it is the weakest of the saga (to which even Lucas said he disliked as well because it was too exposition heavy and too much of a world builder compared to the other 5) but it's not out and out BAD. I mean shit, the most annoying thing about Jar Jar isn't the character himself, we've seen hundreds of slapstick characters in films like 3PO and such, but his VOICE. I mean I can watch his antics on mute and I laugh because they're funny. It's his VOICE that makes me want to take my face to a cheese grater.

I think Phantom Menace was great. Then again, I saw the movies like this: A New Hope; Phantom Menace; Attack of the Clones; Revenge of the Sith (yes, I saw that when I was about 9); A New Hope again; The Empire Strikes Back; Return of the Jedi.

You know, there is one thing about "The Phantom Menace" that, in my opinion, makes it better than all the other Star Wars movies: "Duel of the Fates". In my opinion, that song is, without a doubt, the greatest piece of music in the entire saga!

So, what is everyone's favorite Star Wars environment from the films? It is obvious George Lucas really thought about which environments to highlight during his films. I'm going with Coruscant in the newer films. Wish it was real!

Or maybe he put that scene in to attract fans to the movie more, sounds a bit stupid but it can work. Watching that scene then finding out Luke and Leia are sisters can make people laugh or eve talk about the film to e.g. friends who haven't seen the film. Quite smart really.

Writing all 3 at once my ass
@jamsbagshaw973
@jamsbagshaw973 7 лет назад
SlippyTiger think about it . The whole saga is one whole story . God this gets me (forgive me lol ) you can easily see 6 individual films , but they are merley chapters . When he says writing all 3 at once , he knows pretty much at this stage how episode 3 will end and he had a rough back story in mind when he was writing new hope . So he knew he was going to make 3 movies this time , in contrast to his 1977 film because he he didn't know back then if it would be a success . He knows the end of episode 3 , he just had to fill in the pieces . Fans need to stop appreciating AND hating on these movies individually and comparing One against the other coz it's senseless . I am not in the least bit surprised there were mixed responses to phantom menace , just as there were mixed responses to TFA . Trilogies , stories take time to build . The star wars saga is not like some movies which are designed as stand alone films , and then spawn a sequel one at a time usually each designed as a stand alone with the studio deciding if a follow should be made due to earnings. Such films are easily to watch because all the ingredients that make a story are compiled into a single 2 hour film . The reason idiots couldn't be joy the prequels and therefor the whole saga , is because of a failure to integrate these films and see that those ingredients are planned out over 3 movies . So it's a long and slow process . Mr plinkett is a Dickhead who can't integrate . I won't even bother a dressing his criticisms coz it's never ending . You were always going to be dissapointed with episode 1 because fans who had seen the entirety of 4,5 and 6 seemed go want it all in a single 2 hour film -not happening folks . It's been similar with the TFA , there is barely any story there yet , so many unasswered questions . It can never be appreciated as a stand alone movie because that's not what it is . Events in phantom menace of every kind , from characters , the political turmoil and the themes laid out like jealousy (the fear of loss ) are catalysts for further and further developments in how the characters change as does the political system with it .
