Sparse in number, Leonardo da Vinci’s paintings were nevertheless extraordinarily influential to his contemporaries and to later generations. Explore the inside stories of his rare painted masterpieces and learn how their fame is well justified.

The Codex on the Flight of Birds is 38 pages long, not 18 pages long. The lecturer confuses "folios" with "pages". You can see each page alongside its English translation on the Smithsonian Museum website. Also, it is interesting that the lecturer thinks that we primarily think of Leonardo as a scientist, so he needs to present to us Leonardo's paintings. In contrast, Martin Clayton, the curator of the Royal Collection in Windsor Castle, which contains Leonardo's anatomical drawings, is concerned that most people think of Leonardo as a painter who "dabbled" in science, so he has to present to us Leonardo's anatomical drawings.

To the question, what did Leonardo look like in his prime? Our best bet is to look at a painting by Bramante in 1486-87 of Democritus and Heraclitus contemplating the sfollies of man. This was painted at a time when Bramante and Leonardo were in Milan, well acquainted with each other. Democritus is shown as a laughing balding man, obviously a self-portrait (Bramante). Heraclitus with tears in his eyes, is shown as a well built person with shoulder length curly hair, wearing a short pink tunic. Vasari tells us that Leonardo preferred to wear short pink tunics. Further, the open book in front of Heraclitus has writing in it, all in mirror image style. The painting/sketch of a handsome old man, looking to the viewers left, is by one of his pupils (Melzi?). Thehe red chalk sketch in Turin (done by Leonardo in about 1513) is likely a "self-portrait".

sorry at 39:59, you said that the study of hands could have been what was missing of the 'ginevra de' benci' painting. But isn't that more similar to the hands of 'Portrait of a Lady with an Ermin'??

The name D'Arc is also a French name, as you might find out at Wikipedia. It would be a good idea to search the internet.

He made a mistake at 1:20 he talks of The Mona Lisa being trimmed on either side, that is not true. In 2004 when the painting was being cleaned you can clearly see about a 1/4 inch of wood around the edges. Leonardo never painted the columns in this version, (there are 2 versions) Raphael made his drawing that clearly shows 2 columns not just the lower bumps,he was not copying the famous version.

Even though the cleaned and restored "Last Supper" has flaws, and its detractors , it is strange that this lecturer used the very poor photo from 70 or more years ago as his example of it, in this lecture.

The Mona Lisa Smile A subliminal foreshortened bridge. The bridge marries two scenic landscapes on each side of her face drawing focus to her smile. Darkness, shadow, and light is transformed into a smile that Pinnacles laterally across her face. Thus, creating a visual bridge that transcends the Mona Lisa face. A mirage of a near perfect third dimension. An illusionary idea expressed in paint through the viewer’s eye imprinting on to the mind as a visual subliminal. daVinci divides consciousness and the unconscious with a visual illusion. An intentional deception to master and deceive an overt eye of visual perception as it is perceived by the viewer’s eye. Leonardo da Vinci mastered the subliminal mind and the overt eye with paint to fashion the Mona Lisa Smile. G. B.-Garcia 2019(cc)

the salvator mundi. this particular painting has been floating around for many years. I believe it was made by Bernardino Luini. he was a student of leonardo and never used halos to distinguish between saint and sinner. Leonardo was an art instructor. there was no paper but lamb skin, which is difficult to draw on so they used a slab of poplar wood. maybe a foot in diameter. give or take an inch. if you look at the salvator mundi(latin for the christ one) you first notice the person is wearing a dress?! in those days women wore hoods, long sleeve, dress that draged on floor and a straight collar so as not to show clevage. long hair dainty hands. no beard. the painting on wood is student size. when the student mastered painting they would go on to paint on large canvas, frescos.murals. etc.If this painting was made by leonardo it would have also had a Halo. christies and sotherbys are crooks.they brought this painting for 1,000 and paid off all fake authenticators. the mona lisa was not painted by leonardo. it is student size.

@@randyklinger7649 what the fuck you are talking about we will never know. leonardo taught students on pieces of wood. they would draw then paint. the mona lisa is on wood you dumb fuck. the Salvator mundi is not leonardo. straight collar no halo to tell sinner from saint/ educate yourself before you talk out of your ass.

guys, if the monalisa painting is fragile, the cracked cracks can be updated, just erase using kerosene 'simple right' and don't bother to make it again 'because if you make it again it's not considered original' okay, thank you

Moana Lisa Was A Self Portate 0f Leonardo Himself, As A Female Maybe A Well Keep Secret 0f Self Desire To Be Transgender.. Leonardo's Painting 0f 0ur Lord & Last Supper With Disciples.. Again Hidden Being's, Maybe Leanardo Worshiped Another... Leonardo Diffently Had A Conflicting Mind Hidden, Yet Bought 0ut To The World In Hidden Clues As Well.. I've Never Cared For Leonardo's Paintings Myself..

This guy is way off , he says alot of his paintings were unfinished, I disagree, if you take the time to look , you will notice that every line , shading , smudges, all this things are there on purpose, once you figure it out , there's something that repeats multiple times in every painting of Leonardo, he was a genius, his thoughts are on a different level then ours, remember it's in every picture multiple times !! It's truly amazing once you see it !!
