Leonardo DiCaprio reveals what he learned from Daniel Day-Lewis

Leonardo DiCaprio played a crucial role in bringing Daniel Day-Lewis out of retirement for the film "Gangs of New York" (2002). This Martin Scorsese-directed epic required a powerful actor to play the role of Bill the Butcher, and Day-Lewis, known for his intense method acting and selective filmography, was the first choice. However, at the time, Day-Lewis had stepped away from acting and was living in Italy, working as a cobbler's apprentice.
DiCaprio, who was already attached to the project and deeply admired Day-Lewis's work, joined Scorsese in the mission to persuade him to return to acting. The task was not easy, as Day-Lewis was known for his firm decisions regarding his career. However, DiCaprio and Scorsese believed that Day-Lewis was the perfect fit for the complex character of Bill the Butcher, who was a key figure in the film's portrayal of 19th-century New York City and its violent, gang-driven underworld.
The combination of Scorsese's persuasive direction and DiCaprio's enthusiasm for the project eventually convinced Day-Lewis to come out of retirement. His decision to accept the role is widely regarded as a testament to Scorsese's influence and DiCaprio's commitment to the film. Day-Lewis's performance in "Gangs of New York" was critically acclaimed, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
This collaboration was a significant moment in film history, showcasing not only the drawing power of Scorsese as a director but also DiCaprio's growing influence in the industry. It also marked the beginning of a series of successful collaborations between DiCaprio and Scorsese. "Gangs of New York" itself became a critically acclaimed film, noted for its rich storytelling, powerful performances, and detailed depiction of historical New York City.

The mental effort it takes DDL to achieve his all encompassing method acting must be exhausting. It's a bit like the elite athlete who knows the physical pain they are going to have to endure to keep achieving the standards they set themselves. No wonder he needs a lot of persuasion to get back in the saddle.

It does take its toll and I don’t think it’s not always worth it, especially for him. It might be pleasing to the audience but for him it’s a double edged-sword. I remember years ago, when he starred in The Unbearable Lightness of Being. At the time it was the role every young actor wanted - it was THE most sought after role and he got it. Afterward he said, he felt very unhappy, it took too much out of him, he felt he had exposed himself too much. It left him feeling, depressed and torn up. So the thing he thought he wanted most, was ultimately not good for him.

I truly believe that working with Scorsese and Daniel Day-Lewis is the turning point between Leo the teen heartthrob and Leonardo DiCaprio one of the greatest actors of his generation. Not that he wasn't already capable of being good....I just think that was when he realized how much more he had to step it up or get just blown off the screen..

Daniel Day-Lewis Bette Davis and Sir Anthony Hopkins are my favourite Actors. They’re the kind of people who don’t just “act”, they all but inhabit a role and you can’t take your eyes off them when they’re on screen. DeCaprio is a good actor, but I find he’s very much reliant on the quality of projects he chooses to work on, whereas the others I mentioned above possess that rare artistic alchemy where they can take the most basic of elements and turn it into gold.

Shit, by the way Leo describes it, you can make an entire movie on just the making of Gangs of New York. The "getting him out of retirement" scene would be legendary, lol. The arrival on the five points scene would also be epic. I've heard many tellings of the set like this outside of this interview. Also "Somebody suggested it, might have been Marty" Ahh yes, "Marty." He has a habit of suggesting things, lol.

I wonder how much the method acting is for the co-stars? All of Leonardo's interactions for 9 months, even at the end of filming for the day, are with Bill. If the actors were to become best buds recovering from beers last night perhaps Leonardo might not portray the same fear and intimidation of Daniel's character?

The part at the end where the elder is explaing that hes the last of his kind is so powerful, even as a young boy it always stuck with me. The last 10 minutes of the movie is probably, arguably the best 10 minutes of cinema ever filmed.

DDL as Bill The Butcher is easily my favorite movie villain of all time. Heath Ledger's Joker was phenomenal but Bill The Butcher was so terrifying and intimidating. Him being a more realistic and believable character is what made him so scary and his performance that much more special to me. I'd be more afraid of being stuck in a room alone with Bill The Butcher than The Joker.

Surely that level of commitment and sort of throwing yourself into a role takes a mental toll on you. Probably why Daniel hasn’t done that many films and is now retired again. It’s a shame we won’t get to see him play more characters but it is what it is. It fascinates me how some actors need to go to such extremes whereas others can kind of just jump in and out of character at will you know they’re the character when they need to be but that’s it. Obviously both ways work cus amazing actors have many different styles. Method sounds like hell to me to a certain extent really would depend on the character
