NCMP Leong Mun Wai refused to retract his comment, stating that the Singapore government ensures public services are profitable when asked by Acting Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat during the debate on the motion 'Cost of Living Crisis' on Tuesday (7 Nov).
Mr Leong, Progress Singapore Party's Secretary General said, "I think the way the government conduct policy today, a lot is profit-seeking and using the market model."
In response to this comment, Mr Chee said that he rejects the way that Mr Leong has characterized the way the Government operates, "I think that's quite uncalled for".

Everything from transport, to food, schooling chidren are getting very expensive. Not matter how the people save and skim, it's very stressful on ordinary class working population. The increase in GST add on the burden !
@livingspring2459
😊Chee Hong Tat only disclose 2 billions spent on public transport but never disclose how many billions collected and how many trillion collected from GST, COE, HDB levy, interests, etc
@lugao4696
You said yourself we are here to debate different ideas, if you don't agree with Leong's views then rebut with facts and logic, what's the point of asking people to "withdraw" or "retract"? 😂
@mamoswim
hawker centre management outsourced to the highest bidder, which in turns raise rentals and food prices. last time these were ran by the gov and we never had such issues
@homehome3071
LEONG said they are profit seeking. But they say they ade not. Every time its so easy to quote a few example to counter the fact they r a very high cost govt
@user-pe8yr9ko3w
How would transport companies’ CEOs amass millions as bonuses if they were not profit seeking?
@SamStab007
Smoke and mirrors. This is what happens when you pegged the salary to private sector. Everyone is a CEO now. Sad day for the future of Sg.

“9 most terrifying words in the English Language Are: I am From the Government,and I am here to help”
@davidbobberdi965
All the money collected from COE could be used in public transport. It’s a right pocket left pocket example. COE is effectively zero cost.

If u r true local Singaporean, u know in the ground outside generally feel that way...the government lost touch w the people ..see the government policies, town council very good example, some have more than 50 millions or 100 million reserves each...I thought they supposed to provide essential services but after I know the reserves some tc have..I was surprised
@fabianfernandez6723
I would also add that National Servicemen be paid the market salary instead of just a paltry allowance.
@carlanthony1724
Ty for speaking up on matters such as this.i want what is best for everybody
@bernardtoh5766
I reject the work you work and approached the case as much as you reject Mr Leong
@xthene
did chee hong tat misunderstand the meaning of "profit-seeking"? "profit-seeking" doesn't mean "milking AS MUCH PROFIT AS POSSIBLE"! Even Lee Kuan Yew once said ""You make profit a dirty word and Singapore dies".
@escapiee
But what he had said is true. G always make more in almost every policy.
@JohnYejunGU
Mr Chee was like "we can discuss, but you should withdraw what I disagree :)"
@danielleo38
Public transport, utilities and state board not making profits? only talk spending but didn't say profits.
@WTHH2
Why don't the government publish the accounts of these loss making companies esp transport and utilities.
@choonhockong8215
MOT should look into the staff productivity and service standard. I recently had an unpleasant experience at Buona vista Station, i took the circle line from Serangoon to this station, the signboard so confusing for me an elderly to get out and proceed to star vista. I approached one lady, mrt station staff at the control station for direction, she seemed in bad mood. Mrt operators should conduct spot checks of customer service level, productivity standard at all the passengers service stations.
@kokkeeSeck-xs5yj
If the bus services were alleged that "it is not making monies" that reflects the inability of the gov to run the service efficiently.
