It's 2024. It's her 97th Birthday. I've watched this countless times. I still blubber like an infant. What did we do to deserve this JEWEL OF A BEING??? NOTHING! She is The GRACE-GIFT of HEAVEN to us! 🎼🎶🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🎶
@@shells500tutubo Senza mamma bimbo tu sei morto. - you died without your mama my baby - Just typing those words brings tears to my eyes. It's impossible to remain dry eyed when you hear this aria. Oh that Puccini, he knew how to wring every last tear from your eyes.
I was there - I remember every note - meltingly beautiful. How lucky we were to have lived at a time of Price, Sutherland, Caballé...voices for eternity.
Oh how I envy you!! I would give years of my life away to go back in time and hear the greats! Thank GOD for these timeless recordings. I can’t imagine what she or Pavarotti sounded like live
The crowd goes absolutely crazy after her last note! Her expression at that moment is so sweet because she knows it is so good, but she also knows it comes from a place outside of herself that she reflects, and it is a celebration of beauty and wonder that is shared by her and the audience in honor of the music and of LIFE!!!! Ahh! Goodness!!!
There are many sopranos that sing this aria, but no soprano has come close to the perfection that Price delivers… past her prime, by the way!!! Brava La Price!!!
Wait---what do you mean, "past her prime"? I can't let that go by. This ageless voice was nothing ever than the very prime representative what the greatest opera singing should be. I was in the audience for her many live recitals over the years and there was never a trace of diminishment. No more conditional compliments!
@@jdawgchappellicious Let's be clear, every singer has their prime, this doesn't mean the voice or quality has diminished, but it does change. I am unashamedly a huge fan of Price, but her best singing years are from 1957-1973ish, she did her best recordings during this time. But her voice and ease of high notes stayed well into her 70's.
@@dantewalston2755 Interestingly, Ms. Price delivered this heart-piercing performance in March 1982 at age 55 years old and retired from opera approximately three years later. Of course, she continued to deliver wonderful concert performances for several years. I was fortunate to have heard three of those performances at the Joseph Meyerhoff Hall in Baltimore. I think her last public performance was in 2001, when she stepped out of retirement to participate at a 9-11 related gathering.
My great Diva, I wish you all the best on your 95th birthday. You are responsible for my love of opera. You trapped me on your angelic voice almost 40 years ago. Do you hear a voice of an angel? Yes, she is the best, her name is Leontyne Price.
I still remember Renée Fleming (another Opera great) saying that her mother spoke of Leontyne Price in hushed tones. When Fleming met Price when Fleming was still a kid, she said when Price sang every muscle on Price’s body seemed to relax. This is not the way most Opera singers are described.
The one, the only, unique, stand-alone DIVA ever. I have loved her for six+ decades. I greatly admire her for never milking the audience. She doesn't need to. And she exhibits such class by acknowledging the orchestra and taking the hand of the Concert Master. Her entrances and exits are majestic, and we are in awe. Thank you, God, for giving us Leontyne Price.
in addition to all that can be said about the voice and the singing, she was always so gracious. she immediately turns to the conductor to acknowledge him, before accepting applause for herself. she has done that many times, once I even thought her turning away from the audience, to the conductor, was so abrupt. she was always a classy, gracious colleague.
2:02-2:05 I feel feel like she added a little gospel to that down swing. I love it because she’s a black girl from Laurel, Mississippi who never forgot her gospel roots and even though she became a world famous opera singer…she never forgot who she was.
@ianmorrison3922: You are pathetically behind the times in ‘saluting’ Miss Price to refer her as “a black girl”. DAMN IT! She’s an African-American WOMAN. For your own safety, please do not post on RU-vid or visit south of the Mason-Dixon Line with your immature racial attitude.
@ianmorrison3922 The real instances of what you describe she exhibits in private recitals in black and white, including this aria, along with Vissi Darte & the Butterfly death scene. There's a separate video for Signore Ascolta. She injects more of her true self in this private session than she does in performance. She also employs raw power and technique over literal delivery. If you haven't, you must check them out.
I have always loved Kiri's version the best, but this....this hits me hard in my soul. What a talent, what heart!!!! And thank you, God, for Giacomo Puccini.
I have seen her many times at the met..she is one of the greatest opera singers in the world...happy birthday from all us here who love opera............
Ms. Price is a beautiful woman! Her sultry eyes and expressions reveal the complete & utter joy she had for singing! She executed the high notes with ease and confidence! Her ability to navigate this most difficult aria and to do so with great pleasure is a testament that she was a true soprano!!
She is bringing so much emotional joy to me right at this very moment in time, 11/5/2023. She has blessed us with that magnificent voice. Love her!!!!!
This voice singing this music defines what great singing is and set the feet of this African-American boy firmly on the road to learning how is sing in this genre. Thank you Leontyne for setting the bar and leading the way.
Please.!!!!What the Leontyne´s emotion in the last "un amore cosí", she opened her eyes wide as underlying or hightlighting her astoundingly beautiful voice!!! I adored her in this role!
Price's vocal prowess is absolutely mesmerizing! She effortlessly ascends to the stratosphere with grace and power, delivering a stunning performance that leaves us in awe. What an incredible talent! ❤️🎶
Her high notes are like sweet needles that pierce our ears and gently pass through our hearts to sew up our broken souls together! ❤ (I'm listening in 12.06.2024)
Oh My Gosh... I am a singer and as a little Black girl she was my inspiration... This performance was so stunning I'm almost light headed from pacing my Breath... Legend Icon... The epitome of Diva!!
As a 21 year old, the "Opera" seemed much too esoteric and stuffy for my naive musical tastes. Then I encountered Ms. Price's RCA recording (a cut on her "blue" album) of this aria; afterward I couldn't get enough Opera. Still can't. Thanks "Mama"!
I follow her around on youtube, - they simply dont make them like her anymore. I'll know if they do, she is majestic and it's not a fault for her to know she's so good, anybody discerning would know it so why should she not, - magnifico!
Out of her prime still handling big arias such as this masterpiece by Puccini. Ive heard this aria song by many of the greats kiri, caballe etc but they dont flow as well as price does throughout the climax and pianissimos. Although caballe pianissimo is otherworldly, madam Price does what puccini intended of the work you feel the desperate longing meant to be felt by the lyric.
It's a wonderful emotional piece of music! for a SOPRANO And if you can bring it to it's emotional heights!! That's fantastic! Nice performance 🌷🐕💞🐦⬛ Really nice
❤❤❤❤Now I'm.sure she was the best in this role! The emotion she is able to.convey..the gesture..she is perfect. This is a masterclass, her braveness when thinking about that kiss ,.a kiss she called "un sogno d'or" . Great, astonishing diva❤❤❤❤
