Here is Leopold Godowsky playing his composition "Alt Wien" from Triakontameron, via the medium of his piano-roll recording for the Artrio Angelus reproducing piano. Here it's played back on a Broadwood Artrio - we think it's the only working Artrio left in the UK, if not in the whole of Europe (but would be delighted to be proven wrong). Enjoy this popular piece as the composer played it!

Wonderful rendition by the composer. Thank you for providing this window into the past with a recording exactly as the composer played it. Every composition should have this comparison.

Hints of how he would've played it for sure, would've loved to hear him live.

Would be a good idea to correct the spelling of Wien. It's easier to find then. 😃

Coding looks suspiciously similar to the Duo-Art's, were the two companies competitive or did Artrio just make a bad knock off or something? Roll and piano both sound great so they did something right!

Wilcox & White and Aeolian shared the same roll factory from their jont 1887 purchase of the Monroe Organ Reed Company, and later shared some patents so Angelus rolls used accenting - they called it Melodant. Aeolian made the rolls. This left Angelus finding ways to differentiate its offerings, employing its own specialists. For piano rolls this started with the Artistyle, achieving what Aeolian did with its Metrostyle and dynamic lines together. The Artrio is a radically different system to the Duo-Art, designed by Percy Van Yorxx, and uses a constant suction but variable air inlets (this got round Welte's patent about controlling the suction level, which cost $10 per piano sold). The coding stops off the incoming air. So, there is nothing about the system that's even a bit like the DA except the fact that the rolls were cut on DA perforators. Angelus had a right to add coding to Aeolian masters, but this is one of their own recordings made in their 'laboratory' in Meriden.

@@risingchads Wow! That's really cool, especially the fact that dynamic perforations stop vacuum instead of allowing it in, sort of like a backwards reproducing system, very neat!

How is this the only working Artrio in Europe? Was the system just really uncommonly made or have the pianos been destroyed over the years? I don't see how they can't be restored either, every player system can be restored with a skilled enough technician doing the work!

The system was hard to keep running, and buyers didn't like it even when new so sales were negligible. Broadwood complained vociferously to the UK agents, Marshall and Rose, that the system was 'damaing the reputation of our company', and Marshall dropped it. Here you hear Tony Clayton's piano after David Wragg had done a lot of work on it including making new boards for the stack because the original was warped. Few players get as much work done to them as this, and even so it's only barely doing any expression.

@@risingchads That's really sad, it seems to me that if the rolls were coded correctly and the pianos were maintained that this system could easily compete with the Duo-Art and Ampicos

@@PiotrBarcz I suspect the system was too simple, and heard too often you'd get to spot the 'tells' of the system. By having the theme ride over the accompaniment they are always in proportion (an accent simply builds on the accompaniment). But there are too few in top state to get to hear enough.

@@risingchads Ok, so is this system comparable to Recordo in anyway? I'm don't know much about that system but it also seems to be a bit limited compared to the major three systems.
@risingchads
@risingchads Год назад
@@PiotrBarcz Not in the slightest possible way compatible with the Recordo. Why on earth should it be? The Artrio was aiming to be a competitor with the major reproducing systems, the Recordo was a fairly basic expression system.

indeed, although it is the rendition of the machine as well as the piano itself. Godowsky wasn't that bad at all, as we all know.
