Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. However, several alternatives have been used, including The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater (a.k.a. Radio Mystery Theater and Mystery Theater, sometimes abbreviated as CBSRMT) is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed.
The format was similar to that of classic old time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, in that the episodes were introduced by host E. G. Marshall who provided pithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of those earlier programs, Marshall is fully mortal, merely someone whose heightened insight and erudition plunge the listener into the world of the macabre (in a manner similar to that of "The Man in Black" on yet another old time radio program, Suspense). When I was a kid we'd drive from Wisconsin to Indiana at night several times a year to visit our grandparents. Dad would tune in to CBS Radio Mystery Theatre and we'd listen to it in the dark car, enthralled by the stories with just the light of the headlights and dashboard. Treasured memories from childhood!

Yes! We would travel from California to Utah in our station wagon several times a year to visit relatives. We loved listening in the dark to CBSRMT. Such a great memory. When we were older we would tape them on a tape recorder to listen to whenever we wanted.

Thank you very much for posting this. I taped this five part episodes ( among MANY others of this series) as a kid. I must have done three or four book reports or term papers on this story during my school career. Always impressed my teachers that I knew Hugo’s work at a tender age. This of course was years before the film and musical adaptations.

..and to think.. I, for the life of me... just couldn't see why my fellow schoolmates of the 50's RANTED and RAVED over this book, "lès MISÈRABLÈS", to my detriment. I definitely made up by watching, reading AND listening to it.
