The King's Academy, a National Blue Ribbon, Christian school in South Florida, recently presented "Les Miserables" on its main stage. Starring TKA alum Nate Adams (Jean Valjean), senior Chase Pereboom (Javert), sophomore Kyle Martin (Marius), senior Lexi Graves (Eponine), junior Graham Popadic (Thenardier), senior Summer McCarty (Fantine), and junior Gracie O’Connor (Cosette), this performance showcased TKA’s young talent and was the last musical staged at the school’s Loveland Center. (In May 2017, King’s opened the Page Family Center for Performing Arts, a state-of-the-art, 800-seat theatre, at its West Palm Beach campus.)

This is a quality production. The performance of Jean Valjean is powerful, and the actor playing Inspector Javert has an incredible voice for this role. The sets provide quality background, lighting and sound are quality, and the orchestra is professional. Every performer shines brightly in their stage presence.

I love both JVJ and Javert here. Only 1 little thing: that soft voice of the hardened criminal and convict 24601 is more suitable for his future self. But I like it that he's the guy with the dreams (solos), it´s an interesting idea. Also, the guy playing him looks like a cinnamon roll. And the Javert is quite in the role. I love how both of them sing

My own question is why give Valjean the solos in the prison? I love seeing your productions, I show them sometimes in my drama classes.
@darkarima
@darkarima 7 лет назад
Very good question considering he has to sing "I know she'll wait, I know that she'll be true". The book: "All his youth had been spent in hard and ill-paid labour. He was never known to have a sweetheart, having had no time to fall in love." (His sister cared for him when he was orphaned. then when his brother-in-law died he supported her and seven children.) That said, I think I see (hear) why. Unless there's sound trouble (quite possible) he's the only prisoner willing to sing audibly. It would be misguided, since the song is supposed to be dissonant and raucous, not pretty. But kids are kids, and everything is embarrassing. (^_~) It probably doesn't help that Adams throws himself into it - just speaking for myself, it would have intimidated the heck out of me when I was a kid.

Whatever the reason they did it this way, I think it works because it turns it into a kind of typical chain gang/work song where one guy sings a line and the chorus responds. Vajean just happens to be the guy singing the call.

@erinkavanagh-hall5465
@erinkavanagh-hall5465 5 лет назад
@@michalkatec.6841 I'm not sure LMM has ever stated that white actors can't play the lead roles (there are already white actors in the company) - just that he wanted his original cast to be ethnically diverse, to reflect what the US looks like now. And other productions have run with that. I mean, I'm happy to be corrected, but I don't think Lin ever had a "no whites allowed in the lead" policy.
@mechadoggy
@mechadoggy Год назад
@@catherine5322 Either way, to avoid getting cancelled, I suppose this Christian school doesn’t want to take that risk with Hamilton unless a substantial enough number of African-American students enroll in their school so that they can cast that many characters. (Either way, it would be dreadfully ironic if someone got canceled for having a Hamilton cast that actually matches that of real history.)

OK, wait, wait a minute....this production is using the original John Cameron orchestrations! How could that be? They went extinct years ago thanks to Cameron Mackintosh's greed and tacky taste, reorchestrating it down to 14 musicians and to something that sounds like a trainwreck with cliches dialed up to 100 and an overall chamber sound that pales in comparison to the lush and beautiful original 22 musician orchestration. Did this school ask to be allowed to use the original orchs or did they do it secretly? Or better yet, has there been a change to the orchestration available for licensing which now has an option for the original? I sure hope it's the latter because I LOVE the original orchestration and miss it so damn much! I can't even watch the show anymore due to the disgusting new orchs they've infected orchestra pits around the world now with the new, mediocre, bombastic orchestration. Anyone who knows what happened here please enlighten me. As far as I know, the original orchs were completely retired at the source (MTI in the U.S.) in 2011 when the new orchs were incorporated into the original London production. They had been unavailable for licensing since, effectively ruining the one element of this musical that made up about 60% of my enjoyment of live performances. Hearing that amazing John Cameron original orchestration performed live right in front of me below in that pit was a real treat that I still haven't accepted I could never experience again. Mackintosh--greedy, self-important, tacky, no-taste billionaire--completely "updated" (don't believe a word he says more like "cheapened") the original production in favor of a really badly designed and directed thing that resembles the original to the general public. It's the only reason it has been accepted but those of us who are well acquainted with the original know it is a masterpiece of staging, directing, and design and with the original orchs was so thrilling! So nice hearing the original orchs here. Would have left out the piano as substitute for the keyboards as it sometimes doesn't gel with the scene and rest of the orchestration and overpowers the rest of the orchestra but not gonna be picky now. I'm just glad to hear a familiar old friend reverberating within an auditorium once again!

Look down, look down Don't look 'em in the eye Look down, look down, You're here until you die The sun is strong It's hot as hell below Look down, look down, There's twenty years to go I've done no wrong! Sweet Jesus hear my prayer! Look down, look down, Sweet Jesus doesn't care I know she'll wait, I know that she'll be true! Look down, look down, They've all forgotten you When I get free ya won't see me Here for dust! Look down, look down Don't look 'em in the eye How long O Lord Before you let me die? Look down, look down, You'll always be a slave Look down, look down, You're standing in your grave Now bring me prisoner 24601 Your time is up And your parole's begun You know what that means Yes, it means I'm free NO! It means you get Your yellow ticket-of-leave You are a theif I stole a loaf of bread! You robbed a house! I broke a window pane! My sister's child was close to death And we were starving! And you will starve again Unless you learn the meaning of the law. I know the meaning of these 19 years A slave of the law Five years for what you did The rest because you tried to run Yes 24601 My name is Jean Valjean And I am Javert Do not forget my name Do not forget me 24601 Look down, look down You will always be a slave Look down, look down You're standing in your grave. Freedom is mine. The earth is still. I feel the wind. I breathe again. And the sky clears, the world is waiting. Drink from the pool. How clean the taste Never forget the years, the waste. Nor forgive them, for what they've done. They are the guilty, everyone. The day begins... And now lets see What this new world Will do for me! And now I know how freedom feels The jailer always at your heels It is the law! This piece of paper in my hand That makes me cursed throughout the land It is the law! Like a cur I walk the street The dirt beneath my feet. Come in, Sir, for you are weary And the night is cold out there. Though our lives are very humble What we have, we have to share. He let me eat my fill I had the lion's share The silver in my hand Cost twice what I had earned In all those nineteen years That lifetime of despair And yet he trusted me. The old fool trusted me He's done his bit of good I played the grateful serf And thanked him like I should But when the house was still, I got up in the night Took the silver Took my flight! Tell his reverence your story Let us see if he's impressed You were lodging here last night You were the honest bishop's guest And then out of christian goodness When he learned about your plight You maintain he made a present of this silver That is right But my friend, you left so early Surely something slipped your mind You forgot I gave these also Would you leave the best behind? So, 'sieur, you may release him For this man has spoken true I commend you for your duty And god's blessing go with you But remember this, my brother See in this some higher plan You must use this precious silver To become an honest man By the witness of the martyrs By the passion and the blood God has raised you out of darkness I have bought your soul for god! What have I done? Sweet Jesus, what have I done? Become a thief in the night, become a dog on the run Have I fallen so far and is the hour so late That nothing remains but the cry of my hate? The cries in the dark that nobody hears Here where I stand at the turning of the years If there's another way to go I missed it twenty long years ago My life was a war that could never be won They gave me a number and murdered Valjean When they chained me and left me for dead Just for stealing a mouthful of bread Yet why did I allow that man To touch my soul and teach me love? He treated me like any other He gave me his trust, he called me brother My life he claims for God above Can such things be? For I had come to hate the world This world that always hated me Take an eye for an eye! Turn your heart into stone! This is all I have lived for! This is all I have known! One word from him and I'd be back Beneath the lash, upon the rack Instead he offers me my freedom I feel my shame inside me like a knife He told me that I have a soul How does he know? What spirit comes to move my life? Is there another way to go? I am reaching, but I fall And the night is closing in And I stare into the void To the whirlpool of my sin I'll escape now from that world From the world of Jean Valjean Jean Valjean is nothing now Another story must begin!
