I love the tribute nothing wrong with the standard just to much money for binding and locking tuners and a nicer maple cap

Brilliant playing John. I love my tribute and really couldn’t justify the cost of the standard when the tribute sounds good to me. Though I can hear the differences you mentioned.
@dowaliby1

Wow, John! You play so smoothly and beautifully! I honestly don't think Clapton, Meyer, or Bonamassa could have have possibly sounded better in that opening jam. I am inspired to practice more now. As for the guitars, they sounded very similar to me - both incredible, the difference being that one has a few more frills and costs double the other. I happen to love the understated beauty of the Tribute. But as John aptly pointed out, it's all subjective and a matter of taste with each player and what you bond and connect with. BTW I too absolutely love both Teles and LP's (and will never recover from my addiction to either). I don't think that one could ever replace the other, any more than red paint could replace green on an artist's palette.

I've had Tributes, Standards and Classics. They've varied with spec by quite a bit, some of it just down to how Gibson chose to revamp the range of models in any given year. They've all been good guitars but, I always end up going back to a Classic.

I lean toward preferring an unbound fretboard. I am also not a big fan of the type of binding (plastic(?)) that Gibson uses...along with the way they do those "fret nibs". If I was choosing between those two, I'd prefer the "Tribute".

The tribute I believe has weight reduction. Not sure about the 01 standard
@calbrockocat8728

That weight difference is unsurprising. My 2004 Epiphone Standard is 10.4 lbs, about the same as that Gibson Standard. The humbuckers really told the tale as to the differences. Love comparison videos like this, where the guitar is switched back and forth like that on the video.

Great vid mate. I'm selling a lot of my guitars to fund a used Les Paul. A Tribute, A Studio, or if I'm lucky, a family selling a Classic from their heritage. This video really helps making the decision. It will be a Tribute, or a light weight Studio. Are you on fire on the solos? It must be the Gibson vibe in your fingers. 😂

The Tribute sounds more like a Tele on steroids like a good 59 original like. Funny how their cheapest lp sounds more like a good 59 albeit to compete. Built to compete with PRS SE single cuts at that price point. There is a lot of near mint condition LPS on the market probably bought during the pandemic

Maybe that's why Gibson calls it the "Tribute." I don't think there's a better value for the money in the entire guitar world.

Recovering Tele addict ? There is no return after the Tele addiction kicked in ;) Great playing at the start, John. I really liked that. I prefer the Tribute over these two, tbh. No binding on the neck with nibs that only get in the way or catch the high e string. As for the sound/pickups.. that is very individual. I preferred the Tribute's brightness more too.

Lighter weight..Great tone with the maple neck and faster..and half the price for the better features. I'm actually adding a binding to my new Tribute because it will be my choice at the top

I don’t like the sticky feeling of my mates standard. I’ve got a tribute in cherryburst that feels amazing. Just scraped the maple cap edges to show faux binding and now looks beauty.

As the owner of 11 Tele's, I thought that the Standard sounded clear and well defined, whilst the Tribute was muddy and unpleasant. I'm not averse to humbuckers, a couple of my Tele's have them, and I have a few Gordon Smiths which are great, but I didn't care for the Tribute. I did try a few Studios twenty odd years ago, and generally liked them, so the budget end Gibsons can sound good.

Both the Standard's Seymour Duncan Al2s and the Tributes 490s have Alnico 2 magnets. But I liked the SD Al2s best, seemed like more definition and matched the amp plugin nicely. Had a few SD pups and they are all excellent. Not a fan of the boat anchor weights, had a 1975 LP Custom and it killed my shoulder, but the density of the wood gives a particular sound we all like.

I wonder how much of the tone is in the pickup? Would you hear a different sound if you swap pickups? Or the same but unknown pickups in both guitars. So if you are comparing Apples with Apples be sure they are both the same kind.

@Leo_ofRedKeep

Gibson Les Pauls are furniture. That's what Yngwie said. He also said that more money is more money and he knows more about more money than I do. When comparing two coffee tables, past the point of answering whether they can hold a coffee cup and a bowl of sugar, what you're really left with are shape, size, height, curve of the legs, wood grain, finish and binding around. Some are from Ikea, others are from the expensive woodworker from the woodworkers guild but unless the legs are of different sizes, they all do the coffeetabling job just fine.

@shanewalton8888
@shanewalton8888 Год назад
@@macbeth642 It is funny how some people think that when someone has a different opinion than them that they must be lying. Yeah, I have owned Gibsons over the years. Five in fact. And I was shocked how horrible the Tribute felt compared to a Standard or a Studio. Tribute to mediocrity maybe. Who would buy these when you can get an LTD EC-1000 series for about the same price that looks and feels ten times better? The Yamaha Revstar is also a much better built guitar at a lower price point. Glad the one you got was better, but the ones out this way are a waste of cash.
@Leo_ofRedKeep
@Leo_ofRedKeep 2 года назад
A "big fat sound" is not great, it is a castrated frequency spectrum that shuts the door to versatility and pleases belated teenagers who just want to "be like their hero", in case their hero happened to play that guitar shape. The "classic" or "authentic" anything is not a music instrument, it is a costume accessory. Gibson no longer sells to musicians but to re-enactors with a taste for showing off their expenses.
@dowaliby1
@dowaliby1 2 года назад
Interesting opinion. I just happen to disagree with it.
@bryansimmons4550
@bryansimmons4550 2 года назад
I own a Les Paul Tribute 2017, a 1991 LP Studio, and a 2000 LP Classic, all Gibsons. To put it in a nutshell, the Tribute can't compete with the 2 higher end LP's. The Tribute's fret ends are undressed and sharp, and the thin finish allows the poorly matched body halves to show. In its favor, the neck itself is shaped well, and its overall construction is good. Factory pickups aren't important at all, since pickups are a matter of taste and they usually get swapped out, and my Studio and Classic have both had pickup swaps and wiring modifications. Pickups also depend on what amps they are being played through, EQ settings, and other variables. If you just want to own a "real Gibson Les Paul," buy the low-end Tribute. If you want a quality Gibson Les Paul, save up some extra money, or take out a loan and buy a better quality one from the start.
@dowaliby1
@dowaliby1 2 года назад
But wait, my understanding is that the newer tributes are PLEK'd. How could they then be undressed and sharp?
@bryansimmons4550
@bryansimmons4550 2 года назад
@@dowaliby1 You will have to ask Gibson Quality Control. All I can tell you is what my guitar's frets felt like until I did what Gibson didn't.
@dowaliby1
@dowaliby1 2 года назад
But Bryan, in fairness to Gibson, only within the last couple years or so did big changes in Gibson's upper management take place and the company has reportedly become really focused on the quality control issues that had been plaguing the company. Maybe I'm mistaken, but it appears that your Tribute was from 5 years ago, at a time when the old management was in place, and Gibson certainly wasn't PLEK'ing Les Paul Tributes back then. Sweetwater charges close to $300 if you want PLEK'ing done to any guitar they sell. It is a highly precise and advanced computerized fret dressing and set up that makes a huge difference in the frets, intonation and overall playability of the guitar. I know because I had it done to my Epiphone Les Paul and the frets and playability are like a dream.I will be receiving my new Tribute this week and we shall see -- I will report back with my findings. If I am unsatisfied, then back it goes.

@@dowaliby1 All I know is that besides the 2017 Tribute, I currently own a 1991 Les Paul Studio, a Y2K Les Paul Classic, a 2006 SG Supreme, and a 2014 SG Special 120th Anniversary model. None of those guitars have plek'd necks, and none of them have any problems whatsoever. I have owned other Gibsons going all the way back to 1962 models, and this 2017 Tribute is the ONLY one that ever had a stinker neck. All of the rest of my guitar collection could go, but you would NEVER get my LP Classic away from me.
@dowaliby1
@dowaliby1 2 года назад
@@bryansimmons4550 I am glad to hear that you've had excellent success overall with your Gibson guitars. I'm not saying that a guitar must be PLEK'd in order to avoid a problem, but only that: (1) if an instrument is PLEK'd (which Gibson now does with every Les Paul, and did not do with the Tribute in 2017), the chances of having any problems with the frets are next to none; and (2) that Gibson has upped its game immensely as far as quality control since the time your Tribute was manufactured in 2017. You are fortunate to have those SG's - they are beautiful. An SG Standard wa my very first electric many years ago when I started out, and unfortunately I let it go. It's just a matter of time until I get another SG..
