My mom we took her to hospice and it was amazing. It was a facility and her room was set up like a bedroom. It was totally silent and there were 12 of us there. We never left her alone we rotated in and out. I slept by her bed til she passed and she was never in any pain. Thank you for sharing this with everyone. The volunteers slipped in and out so silently and the doctor was always there to increase her meds. We had ministers in and out along with my moms minister. It mattered to us and her. She never suffered one second. She passed on the 3rd day.

My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer three years ago. I looked on RU-vid for information on this horrible disease and found Leslie's web page and have been following it ever since. Leslie always wrote back when I made a comment. I had not seen an update in a while and feared the worst. Thank you for this sign off. I will miss Leslie's updates. The last 30 seconds is shattering, but don't let that put you off. Leslie's husband fills in for her mission to inform others. He speaks frankly about the pitfalls of emergency rooms, palliative care units, and home hospice. He provides lists of things to look out for, what to ask in advance, and things that help you care for your loved one. Beautiful, dignified, life-affirming and above all, loving.

While we were getting home hospice ready for my Mom, she was in the hospital. In the middle of the night, two young, loud girls came in and woke my Mom up to turn her so she wouldn't get bed sores! I told them she was dying and she didn't need to be turned. I escorted them out and went straight to the nurses station and told them we didn't want anyone but the nurse or doctor back in the room again. They apologized and agreed to our wishes.

This was heartbreaking to hear. I’m an RN in Australia and we do end of life care very differently here... morphine pumps are a choice for the patient BEFORE the pain gets too extreme... every person should be able to die pain free. I’m very sorry for your loss 💙

Thanks Rebecca. Im in Melbourne with stage 4 terminal cancer. I will be needing palliative care but all my family are in nz. Im scared to go back there but I have no people here. Im trying to get the end of life pill but they may not because im not Australian born. Even though ive been here 19years. I stopped the lonsurf tablets. My choice...& cancelled my ct & pet scans. I will use my own exit plan if needed. However new Zealand now legalised euthanasia. Id rather die in Australia but I have to go back. Thank you beautiful nurses for your empathy & compassion.

This is heartbreaking. Of all the specialities, palliative care needs to have their act together. There is no do over. And now you, the family, are left with so many emotions and the sadness of knowing things did not work out as you all had hoped. All you have described and the questions you advised should be asked are of immeasurable value. Thank you. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Your wife was an amazing woman.

I agree. An injustice. Extremely upsetting. There are so many drugs that can be given through an IV or even under the tongue or in their cheek. Totally unacceptable and not right at all
@mimad57

This is also a classic example of how Western medicine pushes curative options until the very end, leaving people hopeful and making hasty decisions in the last second. Palliative care should be discussed and explored much earlier than it is at the moment. It ensures that the patient and the family are prepared and well informed.

@@mimad57 It's really more like pushing the envelope as opposed to pushing false hope. In my training as a pediatrician I spent a lot of time, and I mean really a lot, in level three and four neonatal intensive care units. Those are the highest levels. Pushing the envelope meant two things: treating babies who had virtually no chance for survival but resulting in many, many more who survived and went on to be entirely normal healthy children as a result of previous efforts. Used to be a 32 weeker had little chance of living let alone growing up healthy. Now that is just routine. I respect the neonatogists who devote their lives to that work and feel great compassion for those tiny souls struggling to live. There has been an enormous amount of research done on how to determine viability so futile efforts aren't made. NICUs generally also offer superb support for grieving parents. I do agree the system fell far short in this instance. It's a tricky situation if the family or patient isn't ready to talk.

I just found this in my recommendations. First of all, I’m sorry for your loss of Leslie. I’m an RN, of 40+ years, some of those years in hospice & palliative care. I wholeheartedly agree that the US needs more PCU’s or palliative care hospitals as free standing hospices of sorts and are not constrained by stupid opioid regulations. People are suffering and NEED their rest and pain relief NOW, not in 2 hours! Patients need more control in these settings NOT dictated by “it’s not time for your meds” when you have less than 30 minutes until it’s time for your next dose. Hospice at home is what I did. I don’t care HOW MUCH PAIN our patients were in, we made sure, if we had to stay there all day and night to give IV meds if that meant every 30 minutes! No matter in the hospital or hospice, pain relief should be #1! REMEMBER: Pain is WHATEVER the patient says it is! No one has the right to judge or speak for you or tell YOU what it is. Absolutely, the patient should be in control of their pain med options. We took our own call. When our patients needed his/her team, we responded immediately and in person...no service did the call go through. Yes, hospices are money makers no doubt about it! That’s why a lot of people opened hospices for the government reimbursements. Always do your research when signing up for a hospice. Remember you CAN fire that hospice if you feel they are not doing your job. I was the hospice team leader of 1 LPN, myself & an CNA and was given the permission by the Medical Director to give not prescribe, medications or increase those medications as needed. The Medical Director trusted my judgement as well as that eliminated the need for a delay in getting the pain meds to the patient as quickly as possible. Like I said and you stated, the free standing hospices are desperately needed more than home hospice or the ER. I’m so glad you were able to get to a free standing hospice facility. I cared for my mom through breast cancer. I feel your pain Sir, both as a HCW and human being. Thank you for sharing her/your story. God bless Leslie and you for sharing your story. 💔 💝

Good things to know. My dad and grandfather died at home of cancer with home hospice. I have been in the hospital after surgery and they do wake you up constantly. My husband is a dr and he consults with the home hospice nurses when his patients are doing it. The patient SHOULD be able to use a pump with hospice. The thing with pain is you have to stay ahead of it, so it needs to be be given before the pain is being felt. Thank you for sharing this. I wish you and your family peace after this long and painful journey.

In-home hospice passivity seems to be the most bulshit operation run by cowards and Cowboys. Judging by your description stay away from it because they cannot tell the difference between tablets and liquid meds and what is worse they don't care.

I am so sorry you had to go through that. The Hospice here in Marion County, FL sends a doctor to your house. When death is eminent i.e. a week or so, a crisis team comes to the house and you have 24/7 RN coverage. Pain meds are delivered by liquid or IV or pump. It was so unnecessary for you both to have gone through the emotional and physical trauma. Leslie is now in the arms of God ❤️

Our hospitals don’t have a PCU. My mom had Parkinson’s disease for 22 years. We had to finally admit her to an in patient Hospice facility, which was a huge blessing. The nurses and doctors were absolutely amazing! It’s now 3 years after mom’s passing and they still call and check on our family! Her muscles in her throat were paralyzed so she couldn’t swallow meds. They put her in a drug induced coma and she left us peacefully. Her passing was a blessing. The weekend my mother passed, they removed the balloon pump, and told us that if she made it to Monday, they would send her home on hospice. As you said, she was sleeping peacefully, on a morphine drip. They kept coming in to check her temperature, etc and waking her up, taking blood, etc. We challenged them on it, as we wanted her to be comfortable and didn't see the point (that was the only nurse we weren't crazy about, the others were absolute legends!). They honored our request to let her sleep peacefully. So sorry for your loss.

Oh I am so sorry that you and your family have experienced this loss. My wife is going through MSBC now. Since 2013 diagnosed stage 1 then in remission after 4 chemo rounds and 30 radiation rounds and a lumpectomy. In 2018 it went metastatic. She had to have a rod placed in her femur. She was HER2 positive then they placed her on estrogen blockers and she is now triple negative. It went into her bones. Well the Ibrance stopped after 20 months and the xgeva stopped working after 9months. My wife has not had pain the entire time. However it is now in her lungs and she has a liver biopsy 12/27/22. She is having trouble breathing once in a while. They want to start Trodelvy on the 30th. It is so uncertain and being the husband I understand the challenge that this journey has. I am fearful of the future but thankful for the present. We have been blessed with 30 wonderful years together and plans don’t always work out but each day is truly a gift. We do not have children however we do have a very strong support team in our families. We have been told by her Oncologist that there are patients that they have with this who are much older than my wife who are 10 years out with this disease in the lungs and liver. I know that you may never read this but I appreciate your story and again God bless you and your beautiful Leslie and family. It appears she really had a strong loving foundation and support surrounding her throughout her journey.

I am so deeply heartbroken for your family. Leslie has helped so many through her RU-vid videos and I amongst several others faced with the difficult realities associated with metastatic breast cancer. My mom was diagnosed with the same type of metastatic breast cancer that Leslie had last year in September. Her Vlogs gave me strength and hope in times of despair and I think, when and if you are ever ready you should continue making these videos to honour her. Fighting cancer for as long as Leslie did takes a team. She was the captain leading the way and you and her health care team there to support her. Leslie was nothing less than fearless, courageous, and inspiring in her fight against this terrible disease. Wishing you and your daughter so much healing during this difficult time. Words and sympathies will never make this easier but hopefully knowing that Leslie made sure you are loved and supported by a community she built, a community of others eager to embrace and support you during this hard time consoles you and brings you peace during this time. Please Continue sharing if you feel comfortable to do so. Her legacy doesn’t end, you carry it with you. Sending you and your family Love always from Canada. Take care.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your advice on contacting the hospice nurse, direct contact vs call center, brought back memories of my dad's home hospice experience... He died in the middle of the night. While we had his pain under control with liquid morphine, I couldn't reach the hospice nurse when he passed. Repeated calls went unanswered bc she left her phone in the car overnight. I had the hospital trying her as well. Then the hospital assured me they'd keep trying and call me back, then failed to do either one. Several hours later, we reached the funeral home and they came for him... then the nurse finally called back, 5-6 hours after the fact. It was bad enough I was the one to find my dad (in my childhood bedroom) and then had to inform my siblings, and enough that I was orphaned in my 20s, without having to phone chase professionals. One other thing I feel hospice should be better about, another question for loved ones to ask, is what to expect after the last breath. Not just signs the end is near. Bc I was unaware, I thought he'd choked/aspirated and abruptly passed, bc I wasn't right there to help. Things can be much less traumatizing if you know what to expect. Knowing this, I've been better equipped to handle loss since.

I know it's difficult in those dark moments to not feel bad about things that could have gone better. But in all honesty I don't know if many people at all will sit there and check Google reviews in those circumstances, especially during that time. This is not something you should be expected to check reviews on, least of all read negative ones.. the home hospice situation was not your fault, the blame doesn't lie with you and I hope you don't ever feel it does. I won't put my feelings about that that here, I just hope you and your family can grieve knowing you did your best and that she was as comfortable as possible, and most of all surrounded by so much love. My sincere condolences to you and your family. Thank you for sharing this with us, I'm sure it will help people going through something similar. Wishing you strength to see you through, thinking of you all x

Just the simple words “signing off” shattered me. This is the first video I have watched on this channel but plan to go back and start at the beginning, with the very first upload, 11 years ago. I am profoundly sorry for the loss of your beautiful wife. It seems she was a very amazing person who lived a great life and fought hard. I am so sorry the lack of understanding on the hospice part caused you unneeded stress in the last few days where you shouldn’t be stressing, you should be resting and loving up on your wife. Make your voice heard so other families don’t have to experience what you did. I pray you are doing ok, as I am commenting a few months later. Praying for you and your family and everyone who Leslie touched 💜

I hadn't seen Leslie's videos, but for whatever reason, this final video popped up. I can't tell you how sorry I am for your loss! I lost my husband 17 years ago to leukemia, so I can relate to much of this. Home hospice was virtually useless. The nurse came out once on the day he went home from the hospital, while I was out going to various pharmacies to get meds. I had requested the hospice visit to be later so I could get everything together, but they didn't listen. That was the Friday before Christmas. He came again on Monday or Tuesday, was not of much help. He told me he'd be back on Friday. I called hospice on Tuesday trying to get someone to come on Wednesday, as I had financial stuff I HAD to do before he passed. They couldn't send anyone. That night I actually had to take him to the ER, as he was vomiting blood and passed out. I was told by the doctor (the hospitalist who attended him on the cancer floor), that he was on hospice and I wasn't supposed to bring him in. Reluctantly they gave him a blood transfusion and sent him home. On Wednesday our pastor came over and stayed so I could get everything done. He passed on Friday morning, which was Christmas day. When I called hospice, they told me I was going to have to call the coroner, because I took him to the ER, he was taken off of hospice. I argued with them until they agreed to send someone out. I didn't know about that. If you have someone on home hospice, make sure you ask lots of questions before, so you know exactly what to expect! Sorry this is so long. I like you, want people to be prepared! Blessings and prayers for you and your family!!

I just found her channel yesterday and have been binge watching through today. Wow - you all put up a long, hard fight against this disease. I include her family in this because you all were affected by her cancer and were a strong support system for her. I have worked in medicine for many years and am appreciative of how detailed and descriptive she was in her videos about her procedures, results, drugs, side effects, etc. She was an educator when it comes to metastatic breast cancer. You can be proud of her job well done in releasing this information to the rest of the world.
