Great pattern Tim. I really enjoy when you include "how to fish this" advice with the pattern too!

Every flyfisherman should fish a mouse pattern at night. I believe it's the ultimate in fly fishing excitement.

Anyone add a rattle to one? Gonna try it out

Love your vids! They have taught me so much about tying over the years. The little tricks and great instruction has tremendously improved my tying. Thanks and keep the vids coming.

A cool tip I learned from Clark Pierce at Fly Fish Food is to add what he calls a "stinger" He adds a small hook to the tip of the tail and then connects it to the main hook with some articulating wire or braided line. It really cuts down on missed strikes by the fisher and the fish.

That's a great tip! I get a ton, like way too many "bumps" with this and other mouse patterns. A "stinger" might turn some of those into hooked fish.

@@tightlinevideo I've moused in daylight to observe how trout eat the mice and it seems more often than not, they are purposefully grabbing the tail of the mouse to drag it underwater, then go for the full eat. adding a stinger hook will FOR SURE increase hookups based on what I've witnessed/experienced

First of all Tim, a ton of props your way for your impeccable videos. I have taken the time to turn several of them into instruction sheets using Microsoft Word with a link on the bottom to your video. Have you ever tied this pattern using Muskrat instead of Squirrel? We had a local tier her in Utah named Dennis Brakke who has, unfortunately, passed on. Dennis was a great guy and he tied this pattern using Muskrat that worked pretty well. Your thoughts?

did you ever find an answer for this question?

Is this not just Cermele's master splinter but with squirrel instead of rabbit?
@tightlinevideo

Wasn't Cermele's Master Splinter just a Morrish Mouse but the rabbit rather than deer hair?

Actually, what this really is for me is a Pine Squirrel Streamer ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wc7jJp4yaLU.html tied with a Jack Gartside Gurgler back on it.

Yeah, Stephen Morton, that's what I was thinking also. Squirrel instead of rabbit. www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/the-lateral-line/how-to-tie-the-master-splinter-mouse-fly

I agree. Almost a distinction without a difference. I like the idea of the squirrel, holds less water than the rabbit strip.

Tied up 4 of these a couple weeks ago. Thought they were somewhat gimmicky....then today I tried them well before the sun came up....I caught some really good fish! in fact they were the only things that caught fish for me!

Fantastic pattern. I’m amazed a trout would even take it though to be completely honest. I would usually be fishing this type of lure for pike. Definitely one I’ll be trying bud. Great video

Awesome mouse pattern! A bit random but I was wondering if you could do a Waterboatman pattern? I believe I have seen almost all your videos and don't recall one. I was out fishing today and that's all the trout were paying attention to. I did alright sort of jigging a small brown stonefly nymph but those rainbows seemed to know the difference.

Caleb McGrady Interesting, I've never seen trout key on waterboatman, nor have I seen a fly pattern imitating one. I'm obviously not saying you're wrong, just that I find it interesting

Sir Megallot I was just as surprised myself actually and had not really seen patterns for them. I watched one rainbow attack one 3 times before it got away and made it to shore. I then confirmed it was indeed a WB and saw many more being sipped up. Seems like it might be worth a try.

This is a great fly with alot less work, guide fly if you will. I dont even taper body, and use crosscut rabbit. Still floats well, thanks for video

Is there a particular reason you leave the barbs on larger hooks, Tim? I tend to mash the barb on all my hooks nowadays, mainly so that when I get the fly stuck in the back of my hat I can get it out easier! 😄
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 7 лет назад
I have had numerous occasions when barbless long-shanked hooks have come loose when a fish shakes it head. Unfortunately this has occurred most often with larger fish that I'd really like to land. I think it might be the added leverage provided by the longer shank that allows the hook to work free and the barb is the only thing that keeps it from doing so. Just a theory.
@RalphBellairs
@RalphBellairs 7 лет назад
Yes, that sounds logical. I'm only a casual fisherman, so if a fish comes off it just means I don't have the job of unhooking it!

Thanks Tim, nice progression from pine squirrel streamer. And thanks for adding what tackle used to fish it. 👍😎

Tim, I really like the less mess part of this fly. I was wondering what the measurements for the back and front part of the foam are, since I would like to try and tie some of these up.
