Maayong adlow among maestra Jonah! Hawud ka sa pagtudlo ug lingaw ang classroom. Daghan salamat! Lami ang tacos ug lumpia, akong paboritong pagkaon. Perhaps this is not 100% correct, but I am getting there, hinay hinay. With a lot of lessons and learning from you and some help from Google translate, I am legitimately learning Bisaya. In 2 months I will be in the Bisayas with my uyab and her family, so I will be excited to put my education into daily practice with her and her family, and the beautiful locals that inhabit the Philippines. Again, daghan salamat for your lessons. Amping ka always 🙂

Bati is another word for ugly used in Cebu City. When spoken, the circumflex accent is on the last syllable like when you say "ugma" for tomorrow only faster for bati. The word is used generally in commenting on a person's appearance, actions, and even things depending on the context of the conversation.

I just found your lessons and subscribed. Excellent; well paced, clear. I visit the the visayas region, Dauin, and want to show respect to my host people by knowing some local language so this is very helpful. To remember vocabulary I use mind pictures of things that phonetically sound like the Bisayan word in my native english. Like for Dako I picture a gigantic harbor Dock “big” and the boat Barko picture a boat w many dogs “barking”on a ship to remind me of a boat. The goofier the picture the better it sticks in my memory. Relating english pictures to the word really helps my memory. Thanks!

Oh, yes, your bisaya is a bit different from Mindanao. We don't have a pitch on bisaya, which I spell phonetically bisayà (only glottal stop), which you say it bisayâ, combined pitch and glottal accent. Very interesting. I think it's also useful to write the accent marks for learners, because it can be very confusing for reading words like suka, which we can tell by context, but a learner might say súka instead of súkà, lol. Same with words like humót, kabáyò, and dakô, the spelling "dako" is not obvious for learners that there's a pitch and glottal accent, and this important in learning proper pronunciation, especially when meaning can change by a lot with misplaced pitch, like in hápon and hapón. I like how you discuss the flexibility of words, since English has so many words to describe things with more specific context. Very nice video for beginners, and I heard some words and variations of bisaya words that I haven't heard before (like pangit, guot, hawod, and kalsada). ✨️🙏

Hi Micah. Yes. They are commonly used in Tagalog. However, in Davao Bisaya, although Bati and Taas are understood, most people commonly use pangit and tangkad.

Wala’y vs Walay… ??? (Wala’y Lami vs Walay Sapayan) I’m assuming the apostrophe in “Wala’y” means it is a shortened word. Is that correct?
@bisayaclassroombyjonah3891
@bisayaclassroombyjonah3891 2 года назад
Hi jack. Walay is actually not a contraction. Wala means None. If you will use this word before a noun, you will use walay. Example: Bread-pan Walay Pan (no bread) Walay gugma ( no love) Walay tao (tao means a person, but walay tao means "no one" or nobody's there.)

Ur “promise to learn” means little when I don’t learn. It’s just pure memorization. Then u say natives don’t know grammar or vocab or pronunciation either…. Just learn English, force locals to talk that way.

Tangkad is tagalog, it should be ta-as / taas for bisaya. Palda in tagalog then sayal for bisaya.

Tangkad sa amua sa Davao. Palda sa amua sa Davao. although kasabot man mi pag makadungog mi sa taas ug sayal. ginagamit namo ang Taas usually sa kanang tingog, sakaunon nga bukid ug uban pa basta taas. pwede pud sa grades. pero pag sa height kay tangkad amoa ginagamit. naa man sad uban gagamit ug taas.
