Hi, really love your videos. Been through all the tutorial of yours. Thanks you. Also, @13:17, the 7 can't go there because there is a 7 at the top (1st Block). I understand that you might have shown this as an example, but I face similar sort of problems when am solving puzzles.

The x wing is awesome. I sat Ned the video three times until I really understood it. Finished one puzzle using it where I only had half the numbers filled in. Then I did another puzzle marked hard, as I put in all the fours ( and there were a lot of them), I realized I didn't have to fill in everything to go BA k to the fours. So I used the x wing, a d it worked!!!!! I then finished a "hard" puzzle like it was an "easy" one. What an awesome technique!!!! Thanks!!!

I didn't find this to be an issue prior to lesson 20. But lessons 20 and 21, there are times where due the how you are standing, and the particular camera angle, it is difficult for the viewer to see a the relevant information shown on the board. (I haven't watched any later lessons yet.)

Got stuck on a puzzle with most of the squares still blank. Eventually, I put in all the small numbers because I didn't know what else to do - didn't help. So I looked for an xwing. After a long search I found one and managed to get rid of two small numbers. That was enough - the ramifications of that actually solved the entire puzzle. (Well, I did have all the small numbers)
Set out your puzzle at 7:48 and got engrossed in solving it myself from the starting numbers. I was surprised that the approach I have evolved after watching your early videos seems to be working although I have still yet to spot an X-wing. I have noticed that one can get cycles of numbers which can then be utilised to solve the puzzle along with the "only certain numbers can go in this square" check.

Hi Nancy that is wonderful news. You will find even better tutorials on the x wing (tutorial #62 and 63)Many players have told me that i make it easier to understand. It's the teacher in me I think. Thanks for your support.
It’s really not a full example, at least one of the three columns (1,2,8) would have to allow a six in another row. It would depend on the rest of the puzzle
@@SudokuGuy Does make sense this answer. If we pick first column then we would eliminate the 6s on second column. If we pick second column we eliminate the 6s on first column. Where is the logic behind this decision? Looks like a random choice.
Glad you liked it! Please tell others about my site. There are more videos on the Xwing. Tutorials 62 and 63 explain the Xwing better.. For a list of videos go here: ru-vid.com/show-UCd8JaOdfEWcJOtwG6YayW0w sudokuguy.com
Time stamp 13:30 in the scenario where you need to place a 1,2,3,4,7,8 in column 3, where is the logic of placing the four in row 9? It could logically have also been placed in column 2 row 9. This means it could also have been placed in any other vacant cell in column three.
Hi Henry, yes you are right, however this was a demonstration of a technique not a real puzzle. I should have put 1 other number in row 9 cell 2. You are the first person to note this. Well done.

36-469 and 169-26 makes a rectangle too. I mean, if we look for a rectangle of '6's there are two of them, not one. So, is it possible that you established a wrong scenerio?
I’ve watched lessons 1-21 and after learning the things from them all I managed to complete my first really difficult puzzle today that I’ve been stuck on for a while. Thanks! One question.. does the xwing rule apply if the numbers are in the rows/columns right next to each other? Hope that makes sense.
But this technique has an error, doesn't it? On the first example, what if the 469 cell is a 4 value and the 68 cell on the top left is an eight. That could be possible and the 6's you deleted, could be the ones needed to complete a puzzle. Which are the rules of this techinique? Can I apply it only when we have 2 candidate numbers in the cell? Or when? Because, it has no sense for me.
Yes it is not a good example. I suggest you Go to tutorial # 62 and 63. I explain it much better. Go to my channel page ru-vid.com/show-UCd8JaOdfEWcJOtwG6YayW0w to see all the examples and explanations of the x wing much better. Robin

+fatih oğuz Hi faith, I can see why you were confused. The 4X4 scenario did not associate at all with the 2 in block 5. The 2 in block 5 only refers to the senario in block 5 and 8. explained. Hope this helps.
Good question. Using a computer app which allows you to put in all the possible numbers is a form of cheating in that when you do it yourself the correct numbers are your responsibility. Having all the numbers at the beginning can be overwhelming. Doing the first part yourself using snyder notation gives you more satisfaction when you solve it entirely yourself, but it take longer. When you put a number in yourself you then have the opportunity say to yourself what are the ramiciations of this number. So glad you found my site."the most popular site on line to learn sudoku" Please share with others, subscribe and click the bell by the subscribe button. Hi Ankur. I am glad you found my site. I am at present working on a new tutorial showing how to spot in detail an Xwing, as I felt my lesson 21 was not as good as it could have been. It will be tutorial #62
Thank you again for another fabulous tutorial. I can't believe that I'm up to the difficult section. Can you recommend a good sudoku book to get? I need to have the book instead of using the apps on the computer. I need to write in the columns. Many thanks again
Cara Letho Hi Cara, I agree you need a book if you wish to add small numbers which is very helpful when you reach the advanced levels. I generally do not recomment books, however I have found that the Will Shortz books have one puzzle per page which makes it easier to put the small numbers in. Another alternative (which is more work) is to photocopy large empty templates of a sudoku puzzle and copy a puzzle onto an empty template.
Cara Letho Oh fantastic!!!!!.... photocopying is a great idea and you can do a batch at a time- I think this is the best option by far. Thank you again for a fabulous site

Hi parsleybrain, You have a very valid point. Thank you for pointing this out. Yes I should not have had those extra 6's. I have been considering re doing this video for that reason. If you look at the rest of the video the answers are correctt
This is not correct. You have three xwings based on 6 in this example. Column 1 also has two 6s, also making an xwing with column 8. It all depends on whether you choose column 1 or 2 to make your xwing. The outcomes will be quite different. There is also an xwing in 6 in columns 1 and 2. If you choose this xwing, you are going to eliminate the 6s in column 8. You need to get rid of a 6, say the one in column 1, row 8, for this example to work.

At timestamp 2:01 I'm asking, "but how did he know to choose THOSE particular cells??!". I'm trying so hard to learn but I'm so dumb now. (Was recently diagnosed with memory and cognitive problems even though I didn't used to be this way: 8 years of college and succeeded through University level calc III with A's and B's.) You have seven columns with numbers in them, why didn't you pick those two columns? I'm really sorry for the stupid questions, I'm just trying to exercise my brain and get better.
Sudoku Guy oh no, I didn't see that what you did was a mistake, I really didn't mean it that way! :( I just mean that I'm really struggling with cognitive problems lately and I just sometimes wish I knew what made people take that first or second or next step while solving Sudoku. I just can't follow the logic. I'm slowly getting better at Sudoku, though. And I have you to credit for a lot of that! :-) I love your videos. I have a friend that can do any level of Sudoku puzzle and doesn't ever ever do pencil marks doesn't know anything about why people put pencil marks and doesn't know anything about all these different methods and strategies. She can just look at a puzzle and over time solve it without any particular methods or steps. I keep asking her for lessons but because she doesn't have any particular method or steps I don't think she can teach me. I think she's just naturally brilliant. I used to be smarter, but even though I'm only in my 40's I'm having cognitive and memory problems that started about a year or two ago. Thank you so much for everything that you do, your videos and your replying to comments. You're awesome! :)

It is confusing to us viewers because you "look up" to boxes 1-3 before writing the 9 and 7 in Box 7, as if it is connected (maybe it is a habit). Also, I don't recall you making it abundantly clear they are 2 different scenarios on the single sudoku. You may wish to clarify your video description. Thank you for the otherwise helpful video.
Before this lesson, I was stuck in sudokus that have a minimum of at least 26 clues, I could only do some 24 a few times Now, thanks to the Xwing, I can do my sudokus in half of the time and I'm doing most of the 21 clues without problems
Ps. loved your videos and how you teach things, I started to watch just to see if I could find something that I didn't found by myself, and now in this lesson, everything was worth! Also, isn't easier to start the sudoku by numbers 1,2,3... instead of LMB LCR? I always found more clean to search one number at time in all the 81 cells, at least this way I usually would not miss a ramification and save time.
I think it means if 2 cells can only have a 7 or 8 in each then they become a matching pair. Look at several of my early lessons where I explain matching pairs and the power they have in helping you solve.

in the example where he picked the two sixes from the 68s, the numbers to the left of each 68 included 6s, why not pick those 6s? Was it because of the wo 68s?
jakesprake Hi jakespoke, If I undestand you correctly you have answered your question when you say "was it because of the two 68's. For an Xwing pattern in this case we are looking for a rectangle of sixes. I suggest you look at the video again as this is quite complicated. Each time you look at the video you may understand more. Hang in there. You have done well to reach this level of puzzle.
Sudoku Guy Thanks Roy, you said you're looking for one number which only goes in two places. The two sixes of the 68 are matched up with the sixes of the 469 and the 26. But to the left of the top 68 there are is a 36 and below a 169, could those be used? Thanks.
@@SudokuGuy I am still confused like the others as to why you cannot use the 6's in column one? If you used that then you would get different results because the 6's in column 2 would be eliminated?

The only thing I can suggest not knowing where you are coming from with your thoughts is to look and listen to the video again. I am working on uploading detailed tutorials about how to spot Xwings There are 2 types. I also show how to spot an X wing in a puzzle. Hang in there. Xwings are hard to spot, but a very valuable tool for solving difficult puzzles.
After watching your video I completed a Diabolical puzzle after finding an Xwing. Thankyou! Assuming then, if you can't find the Xwing(s) then you basically can't complete the puzzle? At www.sudoku.com there are 'expert' puzzles with initially only 18 candidates. I'm assuming they are the toughest and most difficult to complete? Haven't found tougher ones . . .

There are many computer apps but many of them do not offer these. The best way to find answers is to buy a book which has the answers at the back. The problem with answers is that it is easy to cheat. I use answers occasionally if I think there is an xwing to check if my logical answer is correct. Be carefull not to look at other numbers while looking at the answers.
