Lesson 4: Practice like a concert pianist

Practice with me as I get my Tchaik. 1 ready for performance. I focus on memorisation and fluency of the recapitulation and the coda. I'm very excited to share recordings of my practice as it shows the hidden prep for well-polished performances you are used to seeing on youtube. 90% of the work for any performing arts is hidden from the audience, sort of like an iceberg if you will.
I hope you somewhat enjoy listening to my wrong notes, as I consider practicing to be my most vulnerable state of being. I often feel very exposed and naked when people listen to me practice. 🙈
So just know that we're sharing an intimate moment together when you watch this video.
Enjoy the video and practice hard.
Sincerely,
Sean Kim

Hello Sean, fellow pianist here. I enjoy your videos and really agree with a lot of what you say. I have a comment though in regards to your memorization strategy. It seems to me like you tend to, in your own words, focus on "muscle memory." I know from experience that this can lead to situations where your mind blanks under stressful circumstances because your body does not remember the muscle memory it created when you were calm and practicing. I am a big fan of doing a lot of fun creative activities that help to memorize the piece not just in your muscle but also in your mind. These activities include: playing two sections of the piece and improvising through areas you don't remember- then compare to what the composer wrote and try to think why he/she decided differently than you. Transposition exercises (for example playing Chopin's first Etude in C# major instead of C) - taking out layers of the notes, moving the downbeat to the left or right by one beat etcet. Just thought I'd share, thanks!

that is actually pretty creative and I like it a lot. but ngl, that's way too fancy for my small brain 😂 I just tend to analyse the harmonic components and try to methodically understand why the composer wrote it in that specific way. which is essentially what you do on a simpler scale. The transposition exercise however, I will try! so thank you for that.

My piano teacher makes me play every other measure and it’s a lot harder than it seems

I think muscle memory is really good but it can also be dangerous if left unkept. I’ve had so many cases where I’m not actually sure how the music goes but I’m just letting my hands do the work which causes memory slips if even one note is mistaken. Muscle memory in my opinion has to be kept in a conscious competence, rather than an unconscious competence.

@@kevinhuynh8752My exact issue too. I have strong technique but my memory is terrible because I rely solely on muscle memory. I cant even retain a piece I spent months memorizing after a few weeks of not playing it. It's such a curse 😭
