Lesson 9 from the Lumberjocks scroll sawing online class I conducted. In this lesson, we learn to do bevel cuts on the scroll saw which is useful in making self-framing plaques, as well as some types of scroll sawn baskets. In the first part of the video, I demonstrate how to set up my Excalibur 21 inch scroll saw and on the second part of the video I demonstrate the cutting of the bevel. Great tutorial! I haven't bought a scroll saw yet kinda in the thought process right now and your video helps a lot! Thanks for taking the time to share your work. @ 3:40 it's just like driving,if you concentrate on the line, you'll continually over correct.

Awesome video Sheila. As a new scroller I got this pattern and tried it. 2 big mistakes I made were. 1. somehow I made the self framing part go the wrong direction as it goes out and not in. And 2, I forgot to set the table back to 90 degrees when i cut out the outside of the plaque. :) oops
@SheilaLandry
@SheilaLandry 10 лет назад
Don't feel bad, cjc. We all do that in the beginning. But once we get the hang of it, it is much easier. Once I cut an entire plaque only to ruin it by beveling it in the wrong direction. That is why I say to do the bevel cut first. It isn't because I am that smart, but it is because I made the same mistake and it is at least correctable at that point. Now - remembering to put the saw back to zero . . . that is something we just need to remember! I still have to remind myself. :) Thanks for the comment.

In some parts of the video it looks like you're able to cut using the backside of the blade, is this a 2-sided blade?
@SheilaLandry
@SheilaLandry 7 лет назад
No, it is not. It may just be the way the camera picks things up. I pivot on the back side of the blade when I turn, but the back side of the blade doesn't cut. I use Olson reverse-tooth blades (typically for a design such as this a size 2 regular reverse.) :)

Eight years on it's probably too late to mention this, but when you release the blade from the holder after a cut on an Excalibur saw, you are supposed to raise the arm of the saw in order to remove the workpiece and not just drag it off the blade with the arm still lowered as you did!

Hello, Alan. I guess it is a personal preference. You can actually do either. The blade that I am using is very thin and therefore bends quite easily. I think as we cut more and more, we build up a 'rhythm' and do these movements nearly without thinking. It doesn't harm either the wood or the blade to do things this way, or I would have stopped doing it a long time ago. :) If you feel better raising the saw first, then by all means do so. I feel there are many roads to a single destination and as a teacher, I do respect that some like to do things differently than I. :) I hope you still found the video helpful. Thanks for your comment.

@@SheilaLandry Hello, Sheila, and thanks for your kind reply. Your tutorials are, indeed, very informative and helpful, thank you. I am currently in the process of progressing from a cheap Proxxon (German) scroll saw to a new Excalibur clone (labelled Axminster, from England). There are now a good many scroll saws made to the Excalibur original design, but labelled differently around the world (Carbatec, Pégas, Axminster, King Canada Excelsior, to name a few) and all manufactured in the same Taiwan factory. I love using my Excalibur clone and I have also discovered the wonderful Pégas (Swiss) blades, which are rated by many users as even better than Flying Dutchman and Olson. Keep up the good work and excellent tuition, Sheila, for us novices to continue learning from you. 👍🏼🙂

derek molosse I love it! I cost me about $900 USD (that included shipping) You would have to see which dealer near you has it. I got mine from Seyco. www.seyco.com/category/saws.html . I know in Europe Axminster tools sells them. I don't know their price though. :)
