Not always fully appreciated, Fantasia Baetica is Manuel de Falla's most important solo piano work and one of the major ones within the Spanish piano repertoire. However, its primitive character, harsh sounds and agresive temperament have made it hard for some audiences to fully embrace and assimilate this music.
This is the first of 3 videos where I explore the language, the instruments and the images we can see in this piece in order to get a better understanding and to enjoy this impressive work from the spanish piano literature.
In this first part I introduce the piece and talk about the spanish cadence-chord progression showing how Falla uses it in Fantasia Baetica and some of his other compositions. In addition we'll see some motives and melodies that come out from those basic chords with some examples at the piano.

Fantastic lesson on this masterpiece of the Spanish literature...but I disagree with the pianist...the Fantasia is every bit as great as Goyescas or Iberia. But it does sound a bit abrasive when played on anything but the best Steinway. But Alicia owns this piece...I can't imagine another pianist matching her.

He only says the length is inferior! One can only imagine what we would have if Falla had expanded the Fantasia into a larger cycle....

@@plusjeremy I just wish that Falla had written more for the piano; this work is an absolute masterpiece, which makes me wonder about what else he could have composed...was just listening to Alicia's London recording and was amazed all over again: how exactly does she do it?

@@Janaceks_Dad Well, it’s hard to complain about what we do have! I prefer Larrocha’s early Hispavox recording. I remember the first time I heard it.... I couldn’t believe the piano could make such sounds.

@@plusjeremy her Hispavox recordings are the ultimate in terms of what two hands can achieve at the keyboard...still remember her live recital which featured this piece in the first half...she is by far my favorite pianist (along with the amazing Martha).
