I'm on the job market now, and this information is really very helpful! I'm often surprised at the lack of transparency in these processes, so I'm thankful that you are sharing your experiences.

I apologize for the quality of my microphone (and my inexplicable changing of shirts) as the conversation was made without plans to upload it publicly. Nevertheless, I'm glad it was because it was a blast to record and has super interesting information! :)

Interesting how different the conventional track to academe is versus what it’s like coming out of an industry career. The considerations for my first full time faculty position (current job) were definitely more focused on my teaching and ability to build the school programs rather than my academic history. I’m curious how this difference might be expressed against some of the job market observations made at the end, and in what disciplines.

Interesting observation. I imagine that teaching focus varies by not only field, but also position (e.g., visiting assistant professor vs. assistant professor) and institution (e.g., R1 vs. small liberal arts college).

@@ByrdNick Agreed. I think the more pure academic route is essentially closed to career professionals unless they happen to have gone into a semi-academic research profession and have the necessary stockpile of publications. I struggle to identify anyone I know that comes from a significant career in industry who is now in a more conventional tenure track post.

Thank you for this video. I had an interview for a tenure track position in Europe two weeks ago (law field) and still haven't heard back from them. They said they only interviewed 3 people and that they were going to tell me if they were going to do another round of interviews or if they were going to directly hire someone in about a week...

Congrats on the interview! Waiting for a reply can be really challenging, especially when the employer doesn't meet the deadline that they set.

Referees wrote 280 applications? How does it work?

Hi Emmanuel. I submitted 280 applications that year. My letter writers wrote just one letter that I (without being able to see the letter) attached to each application that required such letters/references - I used (and continue to use) Interfolio to handle such letters.
