I’m still wondering how their new work shop is going to look like... I just hope the next people to live at your house will appreciate the resin stains in the garage as much as we do 😓
@@EvanandKatelynPodcast Adam Savage has answered a lot of great shop infrastructure questions on Tested lately, I'm sure you guys have watched them and taken notes already, but if you haven't go there.
@@knedy Adam savage is brilliant and entertaining but his work style is so chaotic and disjointed, I would not take organization advice from him at all. Case in point, he recently was asked about shop "anchor points" as an analogy to the kitchen work triangle and he had never even heard of the concept of the work triangle in a kitchen and totally missed the point of the question.
@@AnarkiNet I think he is uniquely qualified on the subject as he both uses it as a shop and a backdrop for filming projects. Just like E&K. That's different from a regular shop.
I used to refinish cabinets for a living. Step 1 Remove cabinet doors. Step 2 WASH the cabinet doors with soap. (Trust me) Step 3 Lightly sand the cabinet doors and boxes. If you see dark spots, that's grease, sand harder. Step 4 Prime and paint, use good paintbrushes to avoid brush marks. Step 4 Clear coat. We used UV activated but use what you can.
Oooh, I misunderstood "refinish cabinets for a living". I thoght, it meant refinishing them, so you can actually live in them. Like in a tiny home. But now I get it... Brain-fart of the day
I highly recommend looking into staging your house yourself to sell. I did my own staging and our house sold far above what we thought it could sell for and in 24 hours!!! Also...it was a lot of fun.
"Do I hate this enough to put in the work to redo it... and risk it looking worse?" ^^the most relatable new-homeowner conundrum for real, how did you know that I say that to myself, like, most days of my life
For viewers when buying a first house, I'll add an extra note on here from personal experiences, many places do offer first time homebuyer programs where they will cover the downpayment and closing costs for you. You just need to talk to your bank about options, but you don't have to pay $15k+ to buy a house if someone isn't in a position to do that. HOWEVER, if you use those programs, it is almost certain that your house payment will be more than pretty much any rent. My payment went up about $150 from an apartment for the first 3 years THEN got cheaper, but even when it was higher, I was still getting a lot more space for my dollar. Not to forget all the expenses of a house "You have a bunch of energy when you first get the house, then that energy slowly fades away over time as you accept things the way they are, and it's like, that's just the way it is" .... this hurt
An additional note: Based on where you live, using one of these "first time homebuyer" programs can limit the area/neighborhood that you're allowed to buy a house in, too. As Jake W mentioned: Contact a bank or lending company in your area. A quick phone call will get you started. If these programs are not a good option but you are interested in owning a home, consider working with a financial advisor. They'll help you setup a budget plan and streamline your current finances. If you keep working with them, they'll help you stay on track or update that plan as time goes on. Saving up for a downpayment is a BIG TASK -- the more people you recruit on your side, the easier it will go. "More hands makes less work."
I'm buying a house right now and using an FHA loan! I have to pay 3.5% down plus closing costs, but it's a better deal than conventional loans! AND my monthly payment will be just a tiny bit cheaper than my rent now. They do have down-payment assistance programs where you can buy a house with 0$ down, but you will likely be paying higher monthly with higher interest rate, so if you can save 3.5 down that's usually better
@@katelandD Congratulations and happy home shopping!! I just finished closing on my first home too ♥ While I didn't end up with a FHA loan, the FHA options are what gave me confidence to start considering home ownership. :)
You both *are* moving for your work! It just turns out that the demands for work that are causing you to move are pretty different than you'd anticipated!
Evan hope you read this. The best to improve your back situation is, Isometric exercises, the ones I do that stopped my chronic back pain, created by a slipped disc are The Bridge, the Plank and Lateral Plank, It literally only takes 5min a day, you don't even need to sweat nor to change clothes, and the idea is to hold the position as long as you can, day after day gets longer and longer, and after a few weeks you will find yourself being able to hold positions like the one hurts you with ease. In my case that position is necessary for ride my motorcycle, which now I can do in session of 6hs rather than 1h and 1 week of bed. These exercises where recommended to me by my physiotherapist! The idea behind as was explained to me, is that making the abdominals and the obliques stronger you stop supporting your upperbody weight with only your spine and lumbars, the bridge one make the dorsals and lumbars stronger too which help to support the upperbody too. HTH!
in the house that my wife and I just sold, we had epoxy floors. They were beautiful, but also scratched and chipped very easily. When the builders put them in 4 years ago, they also didn't color match the rooms very well and they left a ton of air pockets which turned into little hard craters. With all that being said, it was always a talking point for people visiting, but I don't think I would ever do epoxy floors again.
honey lasts forever. if it crystalizes, just heat it up in a water bath (160-180). it'll be back to normal in no time. NOTE: if the honey is in a plastic bottle, probably a good idea to transfer to a mason jar or old glass jelly jar (i've noticed the plastic can deform)
You are absolutely correct with the "learning what to DIY and what not to". I always want to tackle it myself, as the learning experience is wonderful. Then, once you've "been there, done that", you can not feel guilty when you say "Just because I can, doesn't mean that I should" and hire someone to do drywall, paint the house, lay tile, etc.
I noticed when you started this episode that the audio sounded off, then I realized you were talking into the end of a side-address mic. It makes a huge difference. The content is great though.
Them talking about not noticing there wasn’t a bathroom door. 100% happened with our house too. It wasn’t until after we bought it that we realized the spare bedroom didn’t have a door!
OMG you have to build a catio sensor to detect when Joob's entering the catio, and automatically starting up the stream! Also, I can definitely symphathise with Evan about his back. I've had problems on and off with mine for years, so I know that feeling well. I've found heat packs and stretching really helps. And don't just concentrate the heat pack on where it hurts, you've gotta move the pack around to get all the muscles so you don't make it worse when you stretch. Anyway, hope your back feels better Evan. And best of luck to both of you with the house hunting! No matter what you manage to find, I'm sure you'll make it fit your life perfectly!
I’m KellBells100 on Twitch and I got a shoutout from y’all when I said I was buying my first home. :) My boyfriend and I have looked into the custom wardrobes and we’ve actually liked the IKEA PAX customizable wardrobes over the Container Store ones. It’s a lot cheaper and seemed to be of better quality.
I recently bought a house that had had the roof damaged by hail last summer. My offer was accepted in October and we were supposed to close in December, but the roof still hadn't been replaced by the closing date. Due to the same roof-replacement insurance issue, since the contract said the roof *would* be replaced prior to closing, closing ended up being pushed forward several times through the spring. We finally closed in April, the week after the weather cleared enough to allow the roof to finally be replaced. If your contract specifies something will be done in advance, make sure you actually hold the seller to it or you can end up with a major headache!
Evan talks like my grandpa, but like in the best possible way. With his stutters and the way he laughs while Katelyn is talking and telling stories, it's just so 60-70 yr old grandpa vibes imo.
E&K need a videographer for the packing and the move so we can experience it and avoid it for ourselves ever again. The hardest part of our move process 18 months ago was living in our own house that was staged like it was someone else's house. We moved MOST of our stuff into 2 storage units ourselves, and it was weird that month (8 weeks?) living in a house that felt like someone else's. Best part of the move was having paid movers. Get bids on having a truck with peeps to load, transport, and unload. I highly recommend that!
I feel for you with your back, and its definitely a good idea to take it easy for a fair while after it actually feels better. I find when mine goes, I'm usually in for a series of incidents unless I extend the recovery period.
I grew up in Houston (Bellaire) and the house we rented had ridiculous foundation issues. The walls had cracked and had massive gaps! We were told, but who knows if it is true, that Houston was on a land like a rice patty and that the water being used for humans and agriculture caused the water table to change - making the land uneven. Now days, those houses were all torn down and mini-mansions were built in their place.
What y'all sounds like you need is a barndimonium. My hubby and I are considering this. But a splotch of land and put one of these on it. You can design it the way you want and have plenty of room for a work shop.
I know you’re in the process of moving basically but you should move the office to the master bedroom and make your office your bedroom. Since you spend the majority of the time in the office use the bigger room!
Without any pressure, move out and stay safe !! We will be waiting, but don't push yourselfs or do any projects, you're health is more precious, don't mind any thing else!! Love u and because we care we will wait ..
Hot honey is my thing this last week too! I saw this recipe for hot honey skillet chicken and Brussels sprouts on Kitchn and had to try it so I made a jar of experimental hot honey. It’s just honey plus some crushed red pepper and a splash of cider vinegar. So yummy! I’ve started adding spoonfuls from my little jar to other things: shakshuka, Swedish meatballs, sautéed zucchini, curry. 😊 You’re right, it’s a good thing.
My boyfriend and I will be moving out of my parents and into a house with a couple of roommates. The rent is SUPER cheap. Though the bedroom is slightly larger than our current room, the layout makes it seem smaller (it's 12x11.5). One wall is 2 closets, rather than one. And the vent is in the only logical place to put a bed. 🤦🏼♀️ We have to fit a queen bed, a chinchilla cage, a very large hamster tank, a dresser. It has been fun drawing up various arrangements and naming them silly things 🤣
the first house I lived in we were there from 1952 till 1988, I was working and out of my parent's house in 88, I lived in Brooklyn in an apt, which I moved out of in 2012, and now live with my Mom in Ohio for the past 8 years, and my folks have lived in this house for 30 years.
I'm curious what their new house is gonna be like, and what projects they might get from it, no matter how small: - painting cabinets and/or doors - painting walls or putting up wallpaper - replacing carpets and/or floor panels - installing or replacing shelves, etc.
Not to mention any specific projects for certain rooms of the house: * Kitchen - replacing kitchen counter/using contact paper over the counter * Stream Room - installing acoustic foam panels/sound dampeners - putting up blackout curtains/blinds - setting up a green screen * Bathroom - rearranging the layout - replacing tiles, even if just with peel & stick floor tiles over existing ones * Workshop - making sure floor is leveled/ leveling a section of the floor - setting up the workshop - workshop tour of all of their tools, supplies, cabinets, workbench, etc or just in general: - attic storage - room makeovers/new furniture - crafting new furniture e.g. a new streaming desk for their setup - building another Murphy bed - shiplap walls or faux shiplap using 1/4" painted plywood strips and command strips - building a new Catio - replacing fixtures and fittings - building a new shed - possibly installing sliding doors, pocket doors, etc.
How about a separate building just as a workshop? My dad built a massive workshop (garage but like enough space in it for 3 cars + he's a professional welder so lots of metal sheets and stuff). But that could be a possibility. It doesn't have to be far from the house, could just be like a close annex? Just throwing an idea!
Licensed Massage Therapist here... Evan try some magnesium oil for you back! It’s an important electrolyte for your muscles to work and heal properly. I’ve gone from muscles spasms where I couldn’t walk to being able to walk within 10 minutes. I use it on all on my clients.
I sympathize with the roof + binding homeowners!!! After inspections we found lots of stuff NOT up to code and the seller was being 🤬. Long story short...we didn't want to lose the house so we bite the bullet and made repairs before it was even under our name. Lol.
Evan, having suffered a similar back problem as yourself, I might suggest attempting to take an anti-inflammatory diet. I discovered recently that a lot of my chronic pains had been due to a dairy allergy and cutting dairy out of my diet has helped to reduce and ultimately helped alleviate the chronic back pain that I had been suffering after my injury.
People do the damnedest things to their houses. Saw a house listing where the owner had their bathroom floor tiled with the image of two moose doing the do. It was even in 1in by 1in tiles, it must have taken ages 💀
@@idiot3566 A really wild design decision for sure! Tho apparently it's a well known souvenir motif?? A spoof off beware-of-moose signs according to my father XD
What if the new owners find a big pile of 'goop' in the garage or pumpkin residue or RESIN blobs. 😳🤣 Also they'd better appreciate the excellent workmanship of the doors, the laundry room, the patio etc. Also they'll have ethernet without long cable on the floor! What are you guys doing about the catio? Are you taking it with you and buying a new window screen or leaving it for the new owners and hoping they have a cat lol. Good luck with the moving and stay safe. :D
omg mikes hot honey is to die for!! i just found it last month. and actually the hot honey is good in hot tea. makes it interesting. especially if you put it in bengal tea by celestial, thats the best!! i put it on biscuits, crackers, anything "bready". and if you want a treat mix the honey with some butter and put it on pancakes! YUMMY!!!
Attic projects since day one 🤣 Honestly you need attic in your new house, it should be your No. 1 priority 😜 Galaxy floors would be too much, but imagine beach floor in the bathroom, that would be cool! Jokes aside, you do great stuff, but floors and those permanent stuff would be probably too much for every day life.
Evan and Katelyn can probably build a custom barndominium for $250K land included. Matt Risinger recently made a video about barndominiums and how spacious and customizable they are.
I had one too, it was VERY complicated and I can’t remember much details but pretty much I was trying to get something from some deadly minuscule creature that can kill with the slightest move, it was some Percy Jackson type quest, had characters like Thalia Grace, and I followed it to a garage basement thing. I it, lo and behold, Evan and Katelyn! They even used scuba suits and was able to capture it and destroy this terrifying creature in a microwave. It gave me a great taste of the adrenaline of hunting down a fictional deadly creature. Evan and Katelyn, you saved me, and the universe. Thank you
@@roosterbooster338 lol. thanks for that recounting. the dream world is fascinating as both objective phenomenon and insight into current psychological stages.
After reading your comment, it occurred to me that my family and i have 10 yrs in the current place and we have lived in the previous place for 13 years which is like half my life lol 🤪 other than that my parents moved after about 3-5 years i believe
Help needed! Where can I write review for E&K podcast? I can't find it, I feel dumb 😅 Also heads up, Google Play Music isn't a thing anymore, it's a link in your video description.
Just saying first thing I did when we start making a baby I build a workspace shed in the garden and moved my stuff out the now to be babyroom. Also I need baby diy inspiration XD
Ok, ok, regarding the prank, I listen on youtube, so I don't participate in review writing, but I think I got pranked right back - youtube suggested I watch BobbyDukeArts because "Evan and Katelyn podcast watchers also watch this", so now I'm a BobbyDukeArts subscriber. Mostly, because I love lots and lots of coloured pencils. Also, I'm 101st!
Which one of you is going to cry first at the thought of leaving this house? My money's on Evan. Then Katelyn will try to console him and start up herself.
Laughing at the "room between two rooms" comment- only makes sense with kids. My two are doing virtual school in this random space now and it's perfect. In regular times it's just sort of a playspace.
