Man, this was really good. Sincere, honest, and real! My gf is going through all this and quite a few other headaches with chickens. Still enjoying it though, she says. We recently did have about 20+ chicks die "in transit" down here to Texas....those winter storms and massive traffic jams on the interstates spelled bad trouble for the "we'll fix it for ya and make it right" batch of chicks. They were doomed from the start. Sad. And yes, seems silly but even though we feed them all the same...they don't all grow the same. Thanks for sharing your realities of chicken farming! Thanks for the kind words. I have heard several people talk about bad chick delivery experiences. A friend of mine from Georgia just lost nearly all of his..... we use a local hatchery (bout a 50min ride) for all our chicks now. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the nice compliment! After another year of raising chickens I would add the importance of selling "parted-out" birds. This seems to sell easier than whole birds. For some reason many people are intimidated by cooking a whole chicken....
Is that a woodburning stove? Of so where did you find it and what brand is it? Regarding Cornish X, where did you buy them and how much land do you use for them?
Yes it is a wood burning stove and it is funny that you asked. I just filmed a whole video about it.... it will be uploaded tomorrow. I get my cornish from Myers Poultry in South Fork, PA. As far as the amount of land they are in a new 25'x 25' enclosure every 2 days. Been running them eight weeks, but this year I am going to try buying all Males and running them 7 weeks
Processing was done at a "Custom" meats processor. They charge $4 per bird. We know the folks that own it, and they told us if we help it would be $3 per bird..... so that is what we had done.
@@donaldstaggs1687 we have done a few hundred of them ourselves. The problem is its just my small family, and we can't do enough of them for retail. If we were just doing 20 or 30 for ourselves it's no problem. I have a video showing our processing layout. Thanks for watching.
Good video of chickens. In most states, you can slaughter at home without inspections for 20,00 birds or less. USDA needed to sell to Restruant or shipping.
Yes when we did birds for ourselves we would do them next to the house. However, when we decided to start selling we decided it would be best to have them done by another processor. Mostly due to the labor involved in processing so many birds. Thanks for watching!
@@hunterbritton1134no, but you can sell off the farm. And you aren’t required to have an inspection, but you do need to submit to an inspection of your butcher area if they decide to come by.
I appreciate you sharing your true experiences with getting started with livestock farming. I’m subscribed and looking forward to other videos. My wife and I are just getting our feet wet with this. You touched on some points such as timing, local usda laws, feed sourcing, processing, etc…that we are avidly researching thru people like you. we look forward to beginning this process with egg birds eventually other livestock as we progress..hope to see you at HOA conference in Va this October as we are in Pittsburgh…..and not too far…for the next few years anyway…🤙

Thanks! They are very simple to make and have overall been successful for our system. Predators have not been a major problem for us so our style may not work for others under heavy pressure from predators. Thanks for watching!

@@humrod1852 No tipping problems and it is crazy windy at our place. The windmills are just over on the next ridge. I have a video coming down the pipe detailing why I like this method over the typical chicken tractor.
You may have already checked on this, but some states have an exemption for under a certain number of birds. Here in ohio, we can butcher and sell on the farm, as long as it's under 1,000 birds a year.
@@scottutrup1685 yes we have the same exemption. However, I have to have a processing area built and inspected with a list of requirements. Doing them in my driveway, under a canopy, on a plastic evisceration table won't work. Truthfully doing 100 at a time is too much for my family to process. How many do you do at a time?
@@rosefamilyhomestead the most I've done is 30. I plan to bump that up to groups of 50 this year. In the same boat as you as far as doing so under canopies.
