I have some older packs that are on their last legs. One today got to the point that it is time for a retirement.
I threw this together with some stuff I had sitting in the shop.
All you need is:
-100w resistors
-Old cpu cooler
-lipo connectors
-power supply for the cpu cooler fan
-some 16 gauge wire
-drill and tap 3mm
-3mm screws
Optional:
-fan guard
-hot glue to hold the guard on
JUST REMEMBER!!!!
IF YOU LEAVE THIS UNATTENDED IT WILL RUIN YOUR BATTERY. BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!!!

If you can build such a complex discharge unit, why not make some simple use from the batteries that are still good? You said two are bad there is many more that are good, if you want to discharge them, just make a simple torch. That will discharge them and put them to use.

Good idea but I don’t want to tear a pack apart and worry about soldering the battery tabs properly and getting the balance wires correct… most of the models I use are expensive and when I screw something up I would be crushed to watch them go up in flames….

Batteries have other uses.... MANY

You could even use them individually....

I bet you are the guy to ask. I want to make a battery adapter to use my dewalt 20v lithium batteries to power a 12v LED light. I have a charger that is not working. I want to rewire the charger to output 12v through the power plug (change out the plug for some kind of quick connect to attach to the light - keep me from plugging this thing into the house because I'm a dumb ass and have kids). I need a 12v step down capable of maximum output from the batteries (unsure the maximum output allowable by the batteries - I have a handful of 5ah batteries) and a protection device to avoid over discharging the batteries. I can do the wiring modifications. I've built a few electronics widgets and know a few electronic techs that can solder the finer stuff if needed. I just don't know what parts to buy. I would like to spend ~$20 for quality components. I can spend more if needed. Can you spec out the parts I need off of Amazon? Figure you have some extra time on your hands up there in the arctic. If not, totally cool too. LOL. I appreciate the information you're putting out.

Wow, that is a more complicated project! Basically you really need a buck converter with an adapter for each battery, one with blades for the battery side and one with slots for the light side…. Plus a voltage sensor that won’t allow you to over drain the battery. Unfortunately that is outside of my wheelhouse. I would need to learn all that from scratch with a boat load of work. Unfortunately I can’t do that with other commitments. Any eBay adapters?

@@mbwoodbutcher Darn the bad luck. I am slowly figuring it out. I was hoping you had all the answers and I could take the easy route. Not mad at you (would you care if I was? LOL). There is an adapter that Dewalt made that outputs 12v with a voltage sensor built in. Only issue is, it outputs max 5 amps. I think the LED panel I have draws closer to 20 amps. Need to test the panel to identify actual amp draw. It's not a pressing project, just something I have been kicking around. Thanks for the response. Keep on keeping on.
