All those ingredients are fine - I would avoid the soy protein and just use black oil sunflower seeds. You can use about half of that volume of food that you feed them if you merely let it soak in water overnight at least. If you let it go longer like 18 hours, it will tend to start fermenting the grains which is a really beneficial asset to the food by making it more digestible for them. I generally have three 5gallon buckets that I scoop a portion of grain into and then let it soak with water. I pour it through a screen into a fourth bucket where I’ve removed most of the bucket lids center so that the ring of the lid holds the screen on the bucket. This way I can strain out the water. Don’t toss out that water because that water is full of nutrients as well and it’s like the sour dough bread starter to ferment your grains.
I'm curious as too how i can use the water. i do the same fermenting process for my chickens and i usually throw out the water out. It'd be neat if i can put it to some use.
@@pajamaninja2157 Just rerun that water back into your grain buckets rather than starting them with fresh water. It will take less time to begin fermentation. You can use this to lessen the time for soaking the grains.
Agreed! Soy transfer to the eggs messes with our hormones! I fermented winter wheat for my chickens. It turned into good summer beer for some happy hens!
Thats the problem with chicken owners. Chickens just need where to pick. Not need to much feed. Chickens are not friend of fat. Fat make so manny conditions sprout. Water belly, egg obstruction, low fertility. Just one time feed. And let them free and they do alone for what they need. And you save a lot of money.
Substitute soy for insects from a composter, preferably Black soldier flies for their high calcium, wide range of diet, and easy care/propagation/harvest.
I purchased cracked corn, black oil sunflower seeds, oyster shells and oats. My chickens wont touch any of it. I finally gave in and gave them lettuce, cooked eggs, diced ham, broccoli. They chow that stuff.. i give them meal worms too.. i have 8 chickens and i get 6-7 eggs every day! Im new at this, so please give me tips.
My hens quit eating corn when it all became GMO full of pesticide. It used to be their favorite part of their scratch grains. My hens have never liked oats or wheat. Maybe the husk on the oats is too thick? They will eat whole barley, which looks very similar. If your hens aren't used to eating dry grains, try sprouting the grains (look up how-to on RU-vid). That will stretch the food dollar and be more nutritious anyway. You need a whole grain that isn't cooked (no cracked corn, no rolled oats). Barley sprouts well
@@queilayenner1280 I dont know just keep on scearhcing on google but something even better that I do right now is I feed them meat scraps from the local burtcher
Awesome sauce loved it its dummy proof because im very new to the chicken life and I've been trying to find 1 that I could understand and their all so complicated and I finally came across yours thank you
Sooooo interestingly enough, I know that's going to sound really weird, But if there are any local breweries, You could probably buy their used up brewing hops off them for damn near nothing, And they're very high in protein and other essential minerals for chickens..... Just something fun I found out ❤
Everybodys complaining about soy meal without realizing a lot of commercial feeds use poultry meal... regardless black oil sunflower seeds would be better
Some areas have a hard time getting better proteins. In our area here in Kentucky we don’t have access to non gmo and organic grains. We will be swapping the soy for raw milk once our cow is fresh.
Every single food source domesticated by humans is genetically modified, chickens themselves are genetically modified from the Red Junglefowl, what really matters is whats in the food and how its processed. Be smart with what you eat or feed and it doesnt have to matter on GMO or whatnot
I actually use 50 lbs cracked corn 50lbs oats 50lbswheat and pint of mallasus sometimes I add old dry bread but but only homemade without yeast as yeast isn’t good for them
Can I ask why cracked corn vs whole corn? Whole corn retains more oils and nutrients then cracked, but I notice a lot of people feed cracked instead. Unsure if there is something I missed or if perhaps not so many people have thought about cracked corn loosing those nutrients vs whole corn.
I decided to feed cracked corn because its easier for the chickens to eat. I've seen chickens that will leave the whole corn alone. I'm sure if you soaked it long enough, they'd eat it though.
Raw or dry Soy bean you mean? Yes, Beans contain a compound called phytohaemagglutinin, which is highly toxic to chickens. But roasted or well cooked bean is good for chicken.
The complaints about Soy and GMOs come from a good place but literally everything cultivated by humans has been genetically modified, its absolutely insane but a good example is the Banana or the Mustard Plant. But i'd imagine for chickens there is a better option than soy but if thats all you have Soy should be fine, its been a staple in several cultures for thousands of years and hasnt caused any problems, dont fall for the fear mongering about GMO and Soy, if you sre truly concerned you should look into how your food is made and processed, how exactly was it genetically modified. Thats what really helps ❤ ❤ ❤ wonderful video and cute chickens!
Great point of view! I’m there with you. Not everyone has the ability to feed organic or non gmo. I’m not worried about gmos myself, as I am worried about the things that are sprayed on our food. That’s why we grow a big garden and grow our own soy and corn for our pigs/chickens that hasn’t been sprayed.
@ThePasturedHomestead that's absolutely true, there are a lot of deregulated pesticides that have issues that aren't well known. Wonderful to grow your own stuff and avoid that can of worms!
Please do some research into soy. There are other alternatives for protein other than soy. For humans, too much soy can be very detrimental. For women. It can affect their fertility and hormones negatively and for men it affects testosterone negatively. If you're giving your chicken soy that means it's getting into their eggs which y'all are eating so it's getting in your body as well.
This was debunked, soy contains a plant estrogen which is only called phytoestrogen because the chemical structure is similar to estrogen, in reality if plant estrogen affected humans then cow milk would be significantly worse since its an actual animal product and not just a plant compound that is only just *similar* to estrogen. Soy has been the stape diet for eastern cultures for thousands of years and i'm sure they dont have any fertility problems 😂 just look into what you eat seriously and dont read quack pseudoscience
Is this measured by weight, volume, or does it not matter? I bought 50lbs bags of each of these ingredients and wondered if i could just mix them together by weight since they are all 50lbs, cutting the soy bean into 3 batches of course?
U forget the laying pellets, protein pellets, sunflower seeds and much more u could just have bought a gamecock mix instead it has everything in it a chicken needs as dar as feed goes
My 160 Rottweiler and my 12 year old hen are best of friends. They are always together. The Rottweiler is an inside dog and when the weather is very hot or very cold the chicken stays in our house as well. The Rottweiler has the chicken hooked on watching TV as well. They are both very spoiled and have a life of luxury. So it all depends on the dog and training.
