This was probably one of the best sym v asym videos I've seen

I second the “best asym vs sym video” comments.The NASA video really brings it home as far as how asymmetry on a rotating mass works and how it resists changing the axis of rotation. Imagine an infinite frictionless plane throwing both asym and sym. The asym would flip directions constantly and the sym would come around and hit you in the arse. Great vid, thanks.

Too bad Mo Pinel wasnt still around. Be willing to bet he would have an explanation on this. Great video Robert! As a high rev guy myself this tells me a lot.

What an informational video and it opens my eyes as to the on lane behavioral difference between the two types of balls. Thanks Robert. 2 thumbs up

This is best Core Video I’ve ever seen thank Robert smith! Been a fan since early 2000’s! My experience is exactly the same symmetrical balls or asyms with very low intermediate diff are much more continuous on backend. Asymmetrical balls are more hook set or more sharp

Without a question, the absolute best Asym vs. Sym video I have ever seen. And, it opened my eyes to why I tend to steer away from Asym balls, especially higher diff & intermediate pieces (unless they're pearl and longer by design). Lower diff and intermediate Asym pieces work well for me, though. This was rad! Well done, brother!

I’m no Robert Smith but I’ve got a few revs. For years I’ve always had all kinds of problems with most asyms just puking on the back end. Recently I’ve started messing with some trick layouts to try to reduce the flare and I’ve found some success.
@justinhoward2108
@justinhoward2108 Месяц назад
Same here, my asyms seem to die out and roll out on the back-end, and it takes me manipulating my release to delay when it hits the point of roll-out. On the flip side I leave 6 or 7 9 pins/practice session with my symmetricals. 😆
@user-gi2ex8rw5z
@user-gi2ex8rw5z 23 дня назад
i have the same problem if I have trouble keeping the speed up for the ball/layout. Layouts do matter. To bad we poor folk can’t drill 100 balls to figure out the perfect sweet spot.
@enigmazero8624
@enigmazero8624 23 дня назад
@@user-gi2ex8rw5z that’s absolutely right. I sometimes like to scoop up some used balls to try experimental drillings on and see what looks good before using them on new balls. Granted I know enough people that used balls are very easy to find and very cheap, but it’s still a worthwhile suggestion I think.

The intermediate diff has the effect of creating a decorrelation between the spherical surface of the ball and the axis migration path (RG plane that intersects the PAP). There are other factors such as weighted flip blocks as well. Imagine a perfectly circular highway. (the axis migration path on an undrilled symmetrical ball) And a car (the PAP) that travels at a constant 60mph (RG value) along that curve from a defined start point A to a defined end point B. (core precession caused by the total diff) The car will take a specific amount of time to travel that distance, and will do so at a very even pace. Now imagine a shortcut across the middle of the circle from point A to point B. (the aforementioned decorrelation, or asymmetry, represented by the intermediate diff created by a drilled thumbhole) The car will get from point A to point B faster along the shortcut, even though it is still moving at 60mph. Bowling balls with higher int diff values will have greater surface to path decorrelation and thus a more significant "shortcut" from A to B. This shortcut results in wider spacing between the track flares, a rapid increase in traction and torque, and faster conversion to roll. This results in the hook and stop motion for high rev players with big asymms. Symms tend to be more continuous because the pin-to-spin-line is between the pin and thumbhole (far from the intitial PAP) and with a much lower value than big asymms. TLDR: the shape and orientation of the axis migration path relative to the PAP affects ball motion. I think Nick's ball is rolling over the thumbhole probably because he usually has the pin positioned quite high relative to the grip. This moves the lower bowtie closer to the thumbhole, so large flaring balls will tend to roll over the thumb on the backend.

I like the explanation & experienced that you have to put the explanation of the Asymmetrical & symmetrical ball rotation. Thank you. Oh btw’ I do bowl good & have a high avg @ 198 and 10 for tilt @ 390-410. But I never had it broke down to me. Thanks,appreciate it…oh yeah I have better performance with strong symmetrical balls, but still have asymmetrical also.

One of the best informative videos on basic bowling ball stuff that no one ever talks about in depth. Most of the other videos just discuss the ball and motion which is understandable. But thus by far blows everything out of the water completely so informative and definitely will help anyone with these types of balls no matter the brand. Thus definitely helps pick an arsenal for their type of bowling and lane condition really makes ya think about what balls you have or even what you are planning to get. Whether it is a pearl or solid symmetrical or Asymmetrical puts a lot of idiosyncrasies into play ROBERT KUDOS to you ON A GREAT VIDEO you have now made more sense to me on the depiction of what is what and why Thank you ❤❤👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸 look forward to next video and keep em coming

The black chaos remake my dad got when it was released was awesome for him . But I have more speed and lower Rev rate ( I'm a typical lefty up the boards but I use my elbow and wrist to make up for the low revs.) the chaos flares and the last ring in under the thumb and when I threw the spy from radical it would flare get stable but then it would become unstable and flare again. And with the combo of my elbow and wrist I hit the ball as much as I can every shot .

Big Assymetrical balls are made for heavy oil so the ball will roll early and roll out. In other words, you are exactly correct.

@@Robertsmithbowling Thanks. I've been bowling forever it seems but never achieved anything near your revs or speed. At best, I'm 40% of your rev rate and about 1/2 the speed or less. I watch bowling ball manufacturers videos on their new releases but it's hard to know whether or not a ball would be good in my small arsenal. Virtually all new releases are shown being thrown by the likes of E.J. Only Radical, with their throwbot, and Hammer, with a young woman throwing, give me any idea how the new ball would help me. Even watching comparisons of symmetric and asymmetric balls tends to confuse me because, often, I really can't see much difference. Your explanation was the best I've heard. Appreciate your taking the ime to develop and film your videos. Hope to see you more often on the 50 tour step-ladder final videos.

Quick experiment Rob, just for the theory of motion.. Maybe try increasing the length of the oil and volume.... To Reduce the back end distance.... (Goal: DECREASE the COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION) Purpose: see if the extra spin time from More oil will allow the ball to overflare like you're thinking. We all know the ball will only change direction once it hits friction... So my thought is It will flare like you're thinking... But then are the lanes really playable????

My ball speed on screen is 11 mph. My 0V8 Captiv8 provides nice length and response to friction, while I see little motion from my Brutal Collison. Both are about 40x5x25. Wondering if the asymmetrical ball burns up? Looking for a ball with same motion as the Captiv8 but reads earlier for when the Captiv8 comes in behind the head pin. Suggestions?

I think the amount of oil that proprietors are using verse the surface of the lanes is a bigger issue that we DONT talk about... Bowling ball technology has expanded so much (The lanes can't keep up) as a PRO you know Lane surface will dictate a lot of what the ball will be allowed to do... ( Hpl hard surface lanes vs soft grippy lanes)..Big asymmetric equipment rolls better with more oil... Depending on the part of the country you bowl..... I don't think there's enough oil to get the maximum benefits of the balls ability.... Which introduces The unlimited amount of ball surface adjustments that need to be made to compensate..... Think about it

I wonder how fast that transfer is made with the bolt…does it accelerate or does it move at a constant rate on the arc? Either way, is there an optimal point to hit the pocket during that 180 degree weight transfer?

What happens if you place the mass bias really close to your thumb on asyms? Wouldn't it make more sense so it will stop rev before rolling over your thumb? With an higher track flare it would make sense wont it?
