Great video Anders and a very important topic to bring up. I know personally I've faced all these problems and feelings of inadequacy, worthlessness, self doubt and of course the issue with never getting anything completed because of perfectionism. And I think anyone that is serious about pursuing the arts needs to learn techniques to face those challenges or they will definitely consume you. As a creator you put so much of yourself into what you create, and when the results do not live up to your imagination its easy to feel like you've fallen short and are not good enough. Without ever seeing the growth you've achieved from your previous project or the one before that. It's also incredibly difficult to see what you've actually created because after hours of work where your mindset has been on "how can this be better?" the only thing you are able to see is the mistakes, the flaws and the unreached potential. But the only one able to see all those things are you.

The pressure to be creative is a reality and I felt it in college film school and working for clients. I have lost creative friends over the years tragically. Sometimes you have to distance yourself from your work and enjoy nature, your friends, and exercise and accomplish some hard work. Do something for someone else to take your mind off yourself or your problem or conflict.

On perfectionism: I learnt from someone once that the etymology of the word perfect originally meant 'thoroughly done', rather than flawless as it's understood today. Whether or not this is accurate, I think it's good and healthy to strive to make things which are 'thoroughly done', but futile to try to make things 'flawless'. This little insight helps me to differentiate between when I'm being conscientious and when I'm procrastinating.

This is unrelated - sort of - but I feel extremely safe and happy when I watch your channel and especially content like this. There is great comfort in finding like-minded people and for that I thank you guys. I'm not a youtuber and I don't use social media much, but I think even if you don't portray yourself, in this day you're kind of always on a stage --- the market gave us social media and now we have to perform everything all the time in front of everyone. It is just a constant performance nothing has happened unless you post it. I think many feel they don't exist if they don't perform it in front of someone... I don't have the solution but I think the problem is our constant need of validation, of a click, of an acknowledgement. The fact that we can no longer just get judged when we walk on that stage, but the stage is with us in our pocket, laying next to us on the pillow at night... It is extremely scary to have grown up in a world where you as a 12 year old is suddenly on a stage in front of thousands of people. Not just at school. You exist online all the time. You're always on stage. Or the mirror of you is. I think vulnerable people feel a little extra they need to perform or entertain and thus turn to creativity as that is the markets solution to it. I also believe that in order to create you need to think more about things. And thinking; especially thought clutter and overthinking leads to a lot of issues. Your mind rests easier when it is occupied. It is very scary to sit in silence and just think about things and look inwards to portray whatever is in there. Dr. Wasim put it beautifully. I think people who are able to portray something must've thought a lot about it from different angles to figure out how they can convey it through photography, videography, painting or something completely different; and I believe this constant thought stream, never silence, is what leads to a lot of issues as well. Breaks are no more. We can turn on the light when the sun is up to keep thinking and performing; we can use our phone or computer when we're alone to still perform in front of those far away. We can use social media to perform not only to our friends and people we connect with but to anyone on the planet. As fantastic as we are as humans - and as much as this "always on" has improved the world. I don't think we as people were meant to be always on. If you have something online someone is evaluating you right now. Judging you. And that is stressful. and you will think about it. far into the night.

"Most creative people are night owls..." Nailed it, doctor, and the using art as therapy, too. I'm not a filmmaker, but a writer. I struggle with adapting to being awake during the day, I have 4 kids so it's pretty much a necessity that I go from night owl mode to early riser. Yet I have more insomnia issues (even when taking medicine) and depression struggles. Usually I end up sleeping the day away. I haven't been able to touch my writing for months and I love writing stories. Luckily, I do have a therapist I talk to 1 to 2x a month and we're working on finding other services I qualify for with insurance to help.

I'm working with a writer on a series of audiobooks.... for a while I thought he found the writing easy, and I think he thought the same of me as the composer / sound designer. But recently we talked about our creative struggles coming up with new stories, new words, new music and sounds, new ideas, and perfecting everything over and over. We realised how we were working really long hours and stressing over reaching the end... only to then start the next chapter. The feeling of completion and achievement is strong and maybe slightly addictive, so we quickly forget (or ignore) the pain of the creative process and keep going... again and again and again. When it comes to RU-vid, I think its important to support and comment on the works of your fellow creators... especially when they know you. We all expect the trolls and the haters, and you learn to ignore them, but cumulatively little things can become big things... .especially in times as they are now. I make a point of commenting on the works of those I know, because I know what they know....a little support goes a long way to keeping the creative industry going. I'm here because I know you, I know how hard you work, and know how much you give to your audience, and just me saying that will hopefully give you a little lift that helps keep 'the demons' at bay. Lovely video. Thanks for sharing.

This has to be your best video so far Anders. Something that hardly ever gets talked about. Creative people are more open to emotions and deep thinking and this has always been a problem for me. I feel like I have a lot of ideas and certain skills that I have learnt over the many years throughout my life, but even though my depth and creativity is something I embrace it is also the thing that stops me achieving what I want to. I am still always waiting for the opportunity to take my ideas further but also want to feel supported by a team. Keep up the great work Anders :)

5:15 Froydis knows what's up. I think being a writer/director is so much different than being a videographer (80% of what RU-vidrs call filmmaking is not actually filmmaking). To take an idea, or body of themes that have lived with you your entire life, to be able to take the way you see the world and use film language to capture it and tell a story with a singular point of view, that's filmmaking, that's where the true self-expression comes from....and when you create from that place, you heal. It's a transcendent process. But it's work. It takes time and a delay of gratification and the development of a creative process that is NOT immediate (which is how Millennials work these days, we want it NOW). It's so much easier to get dopamine and motivation from client-based commercial work. It makes perfect sense to me why Vloggers would be depressed. It's documenting, it's not really creating. And if you get caught up in the algorithm of YT and social media...that's a whole other thing. That's more ego-based than spirit-based. I think people with mental health issues (ADHD, bipolar, anxiety etc) are drawn to the arts because they actually have something meaningful to say. They need to express themselves. If you ask any screenwriter they'll say, 'if you can do anything else, do it'...the people who do it, do it because they have to, because they have no choice. Sure, we all need to make a living but that voice inside us knows what story we really should be telling...the question is, are you working towards it? Or shooting DIY tabletop product videos in your living room?

As I once read in a book, it quoted from a director that said this, "One day everyone will become a director and someone will need to live a life for us to make a movie about." I think the problem you are facing is your creative life disengaging from the real world. The source of your inspiration should be very simple, your life. I write down so many interesting ideas weekly that now my problem is I don't have the energy and time to produce them all. If you are working for a client then that is a different story, the commercial industry is a terminator of inspiration in my regard. That is why I quit making commercials last year.

I think everything that was talked about in this video is relatable , I always start comparing with others in terms of creation of content, how many views am I gonna get, I am not getting enough views and likes and in general when we think about making a living in RU-vid, its super hard because there is just soo much competition Sometimes I also feel that I shouldn't take a break because others who are in this field , they don't take much break and if I do , maybe I won't be able to handle with what will come in the future, I make it feel like this is a test that I need to pass by not taking a break Creative thinking sometimes is hard and sometimes I just get sad that nothing has been working for me But maybe I need to live life for once, experience more things because quite frankly , I haven't done that Thank you so much for this video, made me realize what I should be doing going forward

Thanks so much for producing this video. Currently in the USA we are still deep into the pandemic lockdown battle. Getting production going again is going to be difficult for many reasons. The pressure on creatives is constant and yet somehow we push forward ceaselessly. I would love to see this conversation with the Doctor expanded and revisited. Perhaps you and your other guest film makers can explore methods with the Doctor to reduce stress and pressure that is seemingly a part of the creative existence. Improving habits that can build the foundation for supporting positive mental health should be another tool we use daily as film makers and business people. Given the proper tools we as a community create amazing things, so helping foster good and improving mental health is certainly in reach of us if we become aware and have guidance/ input from professionals.

Thanks, Dr. Wasim Zahid.would love to subscribe and get insights from your video if they are not in regional language. PS: I just yelled at a few technicians(friends) for not being professional (coming soo late)and productive which only ruins the film and love for it. Andyax this COVID-19 is driving me crazy I already have mental illness problems but to get over it I like to be creative and make videos shoot short films and documentaries so my publish some I don’t but I just do it to keep busy I’m afraid to let people see my work as I don’t think it’s as good as what I see on RU-vid I just see how Some people use basic stuff but to get the quality and the look I want is the ones we have a lot of money and just buy all the good stuff and you can tell that the production value is so much better I’ve heard a million times gear does not matter But in some cases it does especially if you’re going for this exact look I have a Canon 60 D a canon T3I but I also have a Lumix G7 and for some reason I like the way the 60 D looks I have use different combinations of aperture ISO doing custom white balance or using the 5600 K Or whatever’s good for sunlight I have ND filters And for some reason I still can’t get the look that I want I shoot at 10:80 at 24 frames per second I have my shutter speed at 50 I’m using Cina style to try to get that flat profile look so I can color graded but no matter what I do still looks like a video that’s been shot in the backyard it looks make a Home video is there something that I missing they use Balance boards I also have a five and one reflector well I try to soften the sunlight when I’m shooting outside I’ve seen people shoot out a 60 D And it looks really cinematic on my Panasonic Lumix G7 are you shooting In Cine like D
