Life we'll keep doing it's thing with or without us or any other species who gets to be conscious as us, we're not that's far from animals, we're still the only species we know that can do many things beautiful things as there are gross ones. it's funny, because thom always spoke about that line in interviews as being really funny; when he wrote it, he said he based it on a vision he had when he was really drunk in a pub. "imagine if somebody turned this bar upside down, and the ceiling dropped away?" and the image of everybody clinging onto bottles tied to the tables so they don't fall. i mean, he thought it was funny, but it's actually darker with that imagery. damn.
Don't give up hope, everyone. It might be hard to not lose hope, but there are many benifits of not giving up your hope. Hope is one of the strongest emotions a human being can have. You might be sad, but just know there will always be someone to believe in you. For one, I believe in you. I believe you can do anything. Personally, I associate this song with the house, namely when you haven't been in it for a long time and finally came back, but it's not as cheerful as in your memories, it's the same as it was ordinary, no different from the same houses. Then you remember your roots with whom you hung out and you had fun with them, but after your long absence they have changed and grown. Someone got married and someone left. I once argued with someone im in love with in the beginning of the year for multiple reasons. My youtube was open playing some other slowed songs, not even Radiohead, some of them didnt even fit how heated the talk wss at the moment. At one point howver, i started to speak from the hottom of my heart, putting all my honesty in everything i was saying and for some reason, this exact song was playing at the moment. Even for an online discussion, it felt line I was in a movie but I only took notice after the argue was done. I dont know if she will ever love me back. I hope so. The feeling that i have is that my love for her is eternal.
I listen to this every time I drink an entire bottle of vodka so far 7 this week New edit/update: I’m doing a lot better I don’t drink anymore and if I do it’s like a beer or two to make me get higher if I get offered some weed and it’s like a Friday or on a day off I’m pretty happy with my life now moving into a new apartment on Friday (first of may)

@@fersasxq8400 it's still probably their most upbeat album lol. only explicitly downbeat songs on in rainbows are nude, all I need and videotape. the rest range from pleasantly peaceful to pretty energetic and upbeat. if you want real doomer albums you should probably go for amnesiac, a moon shaped pool or tomorrows modern boxes by thom yorke on his own

I know it's really late response haha but I hope you're doing better. Doubt you're still looking for an answer but here's how I've always looked at it: I don't know if you've ever read Kafka's works, but if you have, it's a great start. I've only read the Trial and the Metamorphosis haha. Anyways, the Metamorphosis, I'm sure you've heard of it, is where many speculate the line "crushed like a bug" comes from. (p.s. this is gonna be a tangent that's only peripheral to the song, not actually part of it, but it's always colored my interpretation). But TLDR, Metamorphosis is about a dude whose bogged down by everything in his life, from his job to his family to all the inconveniences of the world, and the novel starts after he inexplicably transforms to a giant cockroach. His life sucks. Anyways, I prefer the Trial but well the allusion is key to that transformation (and being driven mad and to depression by the world) the message of Let Down. Overall, the song is about hopelessness, resignation, and above all else, perpetual disappointment. Idk where you live, but me personally, I live in Los Angeles. Traffic's horrible here. Anyways, everyday last summer when I drove to work, I would get stuck in traffic on the freeway. There's something soul crushing about going to a place you don't really want to go to, but having to wait in traffic for the entire drive. The constant starting and stopping is one of the first lines of the song and is a central metaphor for the song, basically representing life itself. There' constant discomfort when you're in traffic. You can't really entirely tune out the road when you're stuck in traffic, because every asshole behind you will want to drive up the extra five feet every time you budge forward. So you're not really at rest, you just keep trying to move forward, but you keep being forced to stop by what's around you. You're constricted by what's around you and you can't go forward. In many ways, it's like life. You constantly desire to be free, to be doing what you want, to be forging ahead, but somehow you're constantly prevented from doing so, and in a way that you can't really control. The line "One day, I am gonna grow wings" actually functions as a double meaning (I'm not sure if this was their intent but it works flawlessly so probably). Especially when stuck in traffic, we all would wanna fly over the traffic and be free right? We all want the freedom to live life, the power to do what we want and to pursue happiness. Wings are a great metaphor for transcending our circumstances and being able to "fly," that is, be happy (that's how I see it). But the other meaning to "growing wings" is that of the Metamorphosis (turning into a monstrous cockroach). There's a crushing, cruel irony to the aspiration of "growing wings," almost in a way that discourages hope and wishful thinking. That's the central existential concept of "Let Down": being so defeated by a life of endless disappointments, such that you lose every last glimmer of hope that keeps you going. Hopeless people, as in the first verse, may turn to alcoholism, clinging to the empty bottles. Beyond just the literal interpretation of physically holding empty bottles of liquor, there's also the concept of holding on to your regrets: after you've been drunk, there can sometimes be somewhat of a comedown, or hangover, or whatever. Holding on to an empty bottle after the fact is sortve a representation of the wishful thinking that things could be different, but what you're holding on to is just trash-- "don't get sentimental, it always ends up drivel" and all--basically that whatever single hope, dream and aspiration you have, you will inevitably be let down. That's basically the human condition. What makes Let Down so devastating is that the song ISN'T pure pessimism. The song actually contains at least superficially optimistic lyrics, such "one day I am gonna grow wings." Really, what the song is lamenting is optimism's naïveté. There's a jaded numbness everyone resigns to, but deep down, we really can't fully commit to detachment or apathy. All of us as humans are just older children, who have learned to protect themselves from pain by lowering their expectations and their childlike wonder. The ability to dream slips away from us all faster than we know it. So Let Down isn't about just plain ol', down in the dumps depression, it's about the exponentially worse pain of constantly trying and hoping for something more, but never, ever really getting what you want. And well this cycle of endlessly being Let Down is your entire life. Losing hope is what makes people stop going. Let Down is about those crushing moments where you lose hope, both the big ones and the small ones. More than that, Let Down is about how many of these disappointments there are. Life is just an onslaught of disappointment, really

i think it's an old commodore 64 program they wrote (jonny is a computer programmer as well as a musician) and that's just the audio direct from the sound chip. it has a really lovely, nostalgic tone to it (to me, anyway) also, year old post lol also also, nice lain pfp o7
