This was my first encounter with this model, so let's build this together. This model is essentially the Vox AC30.... in one of its more popular incarnations. As usual, I build this in my own style, and it went rather smoothly, with just a few speed bumps.

Thank you. I'm hoping that this type of video can help a rookie builder out. I WISH I had this kind of thing back when I started making amps.

Outstanding work DK, there is something to said for amplification by the pound...

Dare I say it, I THINK this version is a little bit lighter to carry... (plywood (mine) vs. chip board)... The amount of volume this puts out is really something else.

Ol Ted supposedly dirrectly copied a 65' Vox AC 30 head. Saw you were building another Weber kit. My heart kind of skipped a beat!! I wish my wife would let me build amps!!

Whilst reviewing schematics, what we have here is a Top Boost circuit built into the Brilliant channel... and better variance/depth for Tremolo/Vibrato than an original. Weber kits many times have minor mods from the originals, like an OFF/disconnect on the Fender optical vibrato. In this case, instead of fixed speeds, we have a pot, and the depth pot too.

@@DeadKobyWebers layout is much better. Vox just added the tube for the top boost at the right side, what made wiring difficult.

Also, you mentioned Terry from D Lab. I'm curious to know if you're a Michigan guy? And if perhaps you know Mark Oppat from Antique Audio in Plymouth Michigan? In the last 4 years I have REALLY gotten into working on tube amplifiers. The above-mentioned mentioned guys are really great guys and have been a tremendous help to me in going down this new hobby hole.

I'm in the Cleveland Ohio area. I don't know any of them personally, but have emailed and had good interaction with many of the other RU-vid amp techs.

@@DeadKoby That's great to hear! I have met some very nice people so far. I am really enjoying this new hobby. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a Weber 800 kit. I have the transformers. All I really need is a board and respective components.

@@DetroitWrecker666 Cool. You can order as much or as little of the kit as you wish. In my case, I always bring my own tubes... and a few other small things.

I appreciate your thoughts on this. I have been on the fence about ordering a Weber kit for a while now. Looks like some decent stuff.

Their kits are better today than they were 10 years ago. I only bring a few extra piece parts. Their speakers are super.

Were all the resisters metal oxide??? As for loud,,, many called the Vox AC 30 the loudest 30 watt amp on the planet! Fantastic job!

Metal FILM resistors. I've been impressed at their heat resistance.

@@DeadKoby and quiet! But definitely a super interesting build. Expensive with those top notch weber alnico blue speakers but you only live once!! Slowing down the trem ,,,, heating up the iron is the longest part of the process. Correct me if I'm wrong but just paralleling in one equal value cap into the three cap trem circuit. That thing could use a half power switch!!
@DeadKoby
@DeadKoby 3 года назад
Correct......increasing the capacitance would slow the tremolo oscillator. Funny thing is, later Vox's DID slow it down, and some guys reversed it to original specs. LOL. Right now, I'm hoping for my family to go out of town so I can really test on it.... even at not-deafening volumes, it's causing stuff in the basement to vibrate in resonance. I've already been told to turn it down several times. The volume goes from almost nothing to plenty loud in about 3 degrees of the pot.... it's a hot one!

Do you think this sounds more like the old UK made AC30s? Modern ones are considered too bright/harsh specially when you add more gain.
@DeadKoby
@DeadKoby 3 года назад
It certainly sounds thicker/fatter than the modern ones I have fixed.
@markcooper9063

Why didn't you go through the power switch first then the fuse? That way turn off change fuse no shock ,,
@DeadKoby
@DeadKoby Год назад
If I ever did blow a fuse, I would have the amp apart anyway looking for the cause.

I don’t like the component selection of the Weber kits. Any kits really. I appreciate the brass ground plane, eyelet boards, chassis’s and cabinets though. This looks like a fun amp to put together. The whole two part chassis is just so dang cool.
@DeadKoby
@DeadKoby 3 года назад
That's why there's options.... You can omit their pots...caps...resistors...whatever isn't your style. I've gotten good results.

@@DeadKoby like a kind of "custom shop" for kit amp builders.Can you also order, parts like Mustard caps or F&T elco's or other label in and output transformers,within the package, of the kit your order?

On an actual ac30 the treble and bass only work on the brilliant channel
@DeadKoby
@DeadKoby 9 месяцев назад
Yup... this is a pretty close reproduction to a JMI I think. Ted Weber didn't re-invent the wheel with this one. It's a good sounding amp.
@timmuston2687

@@DeadKoby it looks great. Needless to say, I made my comment before you mentioned the treble and bass being only on the brilliant channel. My main amp is a 1991 ac30 with reverb. Very nice, and not too bright, but I'd love a JMI era one.
@DeadKoby
@DeadKoby 9 месяцев назад
@@timmuston2687 I've fixed a number of the newer ones... the vintage ones have a different mojo... and this kit amp is more like the vintage.
