Let's Chat About My Work Planner Woes | Update On My 2023 Work Planner

If you've seen my 2023 line-up video or 2023 work planner set-up video, you know that I've been using the Take A Note (TAN) planner for my work planner. This is the planner I used in 2022 and I absolutely adore this planner. I smile every time I see videos and photos of this planner and I just love it aesthetically. It's a gorgeous planner with a functional layout, wonderful 68 GSM tomoe river paper and a fresh color scheme.
But as much as I truly love the layout of this planner it's not a right fit for me for work anymore. I was promoted and my responsibilities have changed and I'm juggling a lot more areas of focus and I need something different. I need to be able to see my weekly view with my time blocked day and weekly to-do list one spread so I can leave that open on my desk most of the day. I need the option to have daily pages when I need them and I need a commonplace notebook option for project and meeting notes and other reference items.
In this video we'll talk about what I've been using and why it isn't working, what I think I need, what I've toyed with as options and where I've landed.

I just changed my work planner to a Hobonichi Weeks. I was not using my previous planner, and I needed to simplify. I use a Happy Notes for my meeting notes.

Thanks for sharing!! That sounds like a great setup. I know many love the Weeks - I like the Kinbor weekly (it's a dupe) better but alas it's not the right size or format for me --- no matter how hard I try to make that style planner work in my life LOL

Preach planner sister! TAN is good if you are the primary orchestrator at work which I am as a principal program manager. I agree if you need more space for a daily dump like major project/program collaboration then I use my cousin

Congratulations. I am using the new A5 undated common planner as my new work planner. This week is my first week using it and so far I like it. I prefer the half over the full year

That is awesome! I'd love to hear how you are utilizing the goal and quarterly sections. This is my first week in the planner too (got it set-up Sunday) but not fully moved in. That's a project for the long weekend :) Normally I'm a half-year over full-year too. I went back-and-forth on which I wanted to order for the A5 but since I didn't have a purpose planned for it (and I didn't own a full-year CP) I decided to go with the full-year. Since I have a lot of projects that run the course of the year and a lot of reference items that I need to access throughout the year I think the full-year is going to be a good fit. But it's going to be an adjustment. Thankfully it stays at work so I don't need it to be too light/portable. I use the half-year B6 for my personal/everyday planner and LOVE IT!

Have you looked at the Wonderland 222? They have the full week, but Saturday and Sunday are stacked. So you get more room for work tasks.

Yes I used Wonderland222 for work in the past (and used it as my EDC last year). It's a great planner and I love it. I'm using the B6 for my social media/brand planner this year and I bought an A5 at that time - so I have one on-hand as another option if the Sterling Ink doesn't work out. The drawback of the W222 is that I'd still need two books to allow for enough pages for the dailies and commonplace notes and I'd have to figure out how to balance the 90 or so daily pages in the planner and the pages in a 2nd book. But I do think that could work too - just have to figure out how exactly. I'll definitely be posting updates and more videos sharing how this goes. Thanks so much for watching.

Congrats! For my current job, I'm in a Common Planner and it's perfect. I liked Leuchtturm's monthly+notebook when I didn't need so much room for my weeklies.

Thanks for sharing!! I'd love to hear how you are using your CommonPlanner for work. Do you use the blank pages for only dailies or a mix? How are you using the goal and quarterly sections?

@@JustScribble I'm in academia, so the quarterlies are perfect for my Gantt chart, I lost the tasks on the left side column and divide the right side column into 4 to represent the weeks. In the monthly columns, I might add specific deadlines. I don't use the monthlies much but I do log my accomplishments there, e.g. the day when a project closes or when I resolve a problem, so it's easy to see later on what I achieved in any given time frame. I use the weeklies the same way you do and the grid pages for notes/commonplace collections. Hope this helps. 😊

Hey Shiv, so I would be interested in more details. Unfortunately we are short staff at our place of business and I'm now promoted to doing the job of three people! I use to document everything from my time to my projects but having to document and plan one more thing became so exhausting and at the end of the day I start to resent the fact that although I deal with compliance issues, I simply and mindfully do what I have to do but gave up on personal detailing. Reality check tells me that I need to take a step back and start doing what I need to do and worse case scenario, personal documentation covers my rear too. Always enjoy your video's and ideas. Just want to say that I can relate to your situation 😂 I was not expecting the amount of anxiety and headache it could cause when my work planner stopped working for me. The solution I settled on is a bastardized Franklin Covey system with a cut-down Stalogy. Seems that you have found your happy place though. Hope the A5 common planner is everything you are looking for 😊

The struggle is real! A work planner is such a needed planner in my life and it definitely made me anxious when it stopped working and I felt all out of sorts. I really need a paper planner in my life and I'm hopeful this will work. a FC system sounds great. Stalogy is always a win too!

Congratulations!!! Personally, I’ve been using the Hobonichi cousin avec for scripture writing, but since I bought it in good condition, now I’m missing the second part of the avec 😆 And well, I’ll be waiting to see if one goes up for sale on Mercari. Just curious….what do you do for a living--what kind of work do you do? I’m thinking this planner will work for me too at work….I have daily e-mails, reports, meetings….you name it. This checks all of my boxes. TFS!

Congrats on your promotion. Planner woes are the worst. Planning calms anxiety and helps us with production. When we can’t plan we feel stuck mentally. I don’t like the cousin either. Actually I found I don’t like TR paper for planning. It’s my go to journaling paper, but not planning. I look forward to your CP video.

I've found that in my work planner I can use any paper happily - but I do love TRP of my personal planner. I love the feel of it but also just makes my planner slimmer and lighter since I carry it with me during the week. Thanks for watching!
