Hello everyone. Located along the D&H trail, this wonderful old culvert is a great place to sit and rest for minute. We are in between the the unincorporated community of Herrick Center and Ararat township in Susquehanna County PA. The trail we are hiking is called the D&H because that is the railroad that owned the railbed last, however it was built by a different company.
The Erie railroad originally built this way back in 1868-1870. This was built to tap into the anthracite coal deposits in Lackawanna County PA. It would eventually be sold to the Delaware and Hudson railroad in 1955. That most likely dates this culvert to 1869. Pretty cool! Thank you for watching. 6/9/24

Great video. What a nice spot for a bench. That running water is so musical and relaxing. I can well imagine that a great many folks have used it over the years for meditation, book reading, and relaxing. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much, I was incredibly happy to come across this bench 😆. I needed a spot to rest. I would love to see this same location in the winter months with a nice fresh snow. I imagine it would be beautiful. Have a great evening!

Thank you very much Burton. When this was upgraded to railtrail status they removed alot of the original stone culverts and replaced them with concrete. It was nice finding this one. I also believe this one may have had a down step in the middle of it. I believe that is why I couldn't see daylight. From the other side.

Thank you Dave. So many of the original culverts have been replaced on this trail so it's great to find one that survived.

That line was also the Erie’s westward connection in conjunction with the Jersey Central. The CNJ hauled their westbound traffic to Ashley yard. The Erie “job” to use railroad lingo worked out of Ashley yard and headed up and over Mt. Ararat to join the Erie main at Jefferson junction. I think that this arrangement lasted until the CNJ abandoned operations in Pennsylvania and they worked out a deal with the EL to run their trains up their High Bridge branch to the Lackawanna main and then westward to Scranton. A lot of this history is covered in the Morning Sun books. I wish that I had the one entitled “The Anthracite Railroads & Mining Volume 1”. It’s out of print and goes for over $100 per copy on eBay.

The line went up and over Mt. Ararat to haul coal out of the Wyoming valley. It was a killer grade. I don’t know the exact percent grade but the D&H used monster 0-8-8-0’s to shove the coal trains north. Somewhat north of the summit there was a wye to turn the engines for the return trip to Carbondale engine terminal or beyond to Hudson yard.

Good morning Bob. This indeed is a brutal grade. Stella and I have been hiking up grade the whole time since we started in Simpson a couple of months ago. Now that we finally hit Ararat summit we can go down hill towards Starrucca. There is a great information board at the Ararat rd trailhead. The plan is to park there tomorrow and head north another seven miles. I'll snap a picture of the board. It shows the details of the grade. Have a great day Bob.

Hi Kevin. How far is Starrucca viaduct from that location ?? Delaware & Hudson abandoned the Jefferson connection after they rebuilt and enlarged Belden Hill Tunnel.

Good evening William. I'd say it's roughly 20 to 25 miles away from this culvert. I'll be picking up at the site of the little Starrucca viaduct. This one was made of steel and was rather impressive. All that remains now are the stone and concrete footings. It's a pretty nice location. I'm hoping to make it to Lanesboro by the end of August.

@ kevinsalsbury 2118 If it was retained and I see no reason why it would not have been, there is an interesting old truss bridge right near Starrucca viaduct. At least one old photo of a D & H train led by blue & yellow Delaware & Hudson GE U30C diesels appeared on the inside back cover of the May 1975 ( ? ) issue of Railroad Magazine with an Erie Lackawanna SD45 overhead with an open auto rack on Starrucca viaduct for a publicity photo. How times of changed.

@@kevinsalsbury2118 There was an overhead picture of it inside an old issue of Trains magazine from the late 1980's. 1988 ??? issue. Not sure of the month. November ??? It was the issue with the night shot of The Delaware Otsego Corporation's Susquehanna railroad ( NYS & W ) brand new stack trains to Little Ferry New Jersey posed atop Starrucca. The article in Trains is well researched with numerius photos of Delaware Otsego operations and maps and tells the story of how Walter Rich rebuilt the Susquehanna from a 40 mile industrial switching road that was about to be liquidated and abandoned to a major carrier of transcontinental stack trains. Railfan and Railroad also did a similar article around the same time. The truss bridge is not too far away in the overhead photo and was / is a single span truss built for double track and almost lost in the trees and abandoned at that point in time. I first saw it in an old VHS video titled Dateline Delaware & Hudson. That video shows Delaware & Hudson trains negotiating the track under Starrucca's arches as well as the Binghamton New York area and Belden Hill tunnel before they enlarged and rebuilt it and D & H crossing that small truss bridge with a back up move of 80 cars. The D & H video 🎥 is from 1981.
