A lady I used to work with told me stories from when she was a teenager in the early 60s. You’d invite kids over from school and have “record parties.” Everyone would bring a few singles and dance. Kind of like in this video. New sound, new dances, and just innocent fun. The 60s were in no way perfect, but I always longed to have been able to grow up back then. Even as a child when TLC and Boys II Men were huge, I still preferred my oldies station and listening to my grandma tell nostalgic stories. ☺️ So many great hits!
Unforgettable moments... wonderful times, the sixties and seventies... quality music... times when everything was much more relaxed. Back then you could still talk about dancing. It really had its charms. Big contrast to today's society...! Chris Montez... pure youth sentiment...!
No guitar needed! Just a hard thumping drum, a rockin' organ and Chris Montez's voice! I loved it when I first heard it in 1962, and still love it today. I miss the old days. They may have had their bad times, but they aren't as crazy as they are now.
@@AlanSmith-ym8pj We checked out Wikipedia and found the original lineup: Joel Hill on guitar, Ray Johnson on Philicorda organ, Ray Pohlman on bass guitar and Jesse Sailes on drums. The dominant drumming of Sailes and Johnson on the organ practically fade out Hill's rhythmn guitar. It is there, keeping rhythmn with the drums, but hardly anyone would notice. While there is no biographical information on Mr. Hill or Mr. Johnson, Jessie Sailes (1919-2007) was a drummer who played on many hit records during the 1940's and '50's. Ray Pohlman--born Merlyn Ray Pohlman (1930-1990) was a member of the well known session group The Wrecking Crew and was a bass guitarist for various artists from Sam Cooke to The Beach Boys. Check Wikipedia for a full list. Thanks for the correction, mate! I learned something I never knew before.
To be technical the guitarist isn't pressing fully down on the frets. so it has an almost percussive sound which makes it harder to recognise as a guitar
I remember these songs from the 60ties and the 50ties ,these were the best years to live in, the music was great and so we're people back then. These songs bring back so many good memories for me. Would I go back to these days if I could? YES,!!! ♥️
@@sharonrebibo6015 Don’t know about safe ! Children were seen but not heard. Pediphiles got away with everything because children were thought to have overactive imagination
I was born 62. 85 was when I entered university. I don’t look back on queuing at the post office every month to pay the bills… And playlists are a bit better than trying to hit the song you liked with the recorder pickup. And hey, the world was supposed to go under in a nuclear war before the year 2000, the Cold War was on. But ok, the 90’s were great.
What is nice is you can enjoy the music even now. I do pottery at a studio, and I am one of the older ones. Many in their 20s know a lot of the songs I enjoyed, and even before my time. It makes it fun.
when i watch these kids who are now in their seventies...like myself....i often wondered....this had to be the best time of their lives...even if we didn't think so at the time....
Actually, I knew we were living during a special time. However, Uncle Sam, had a different plan for me. So I ended up missing out somewhat. However, I've been involved in the MJ style, hip hop, and, Scottish Country Dance, in recent years, and I'm almost 72 years old.
In the early 60's, we would go to a local amusement park. Friday night was coke a COLA night and we take our bottle caps to pay for the rides. There as a famous ballroom when the big bands would play there but in the 60's rock n roll bands played. I was in my preteens then and this band would play Hang On Sloopy they were The McCoys. The dance craze was the STOMP. Packed ballroom stomping to the beat of Hang On Sloopy. Best time of my life.
Even at age 69, that drum intro gets my feet going. One of my wife's favourite tracks; they used to play it at a weekly disco we attended in the early seventies. It was old then, but it still filled the floor!
I loved this and bought the 45 when I was 13 in junior high back home in the Bronx I can still remember dancing to this with my girl at a school dance with a lot people crowded around us clapping back in the day Those days are gone for good Still got it although packed away, after all with you-tube anything you want to hear is a few seconds away
The music we had back in the sixties was absolutely phenomenal. It had the right beat, the right words, and it made you want to dance and boy did we. Gee, wonder if I could still make some of those moves today? LOL LOL
les années 60 c était une époque formidable en 60 j avais 12 ans on dansait on s amuser il y avait moins de contraintes que maintenant mais enfin c est la vie Claude progni
Where in Scotland? I'm just curious because that is one of the places I have wanted to visit my whole life because supposedly that's where my family originated. There and Ireland. I have no family here anymore. They are all gone hopefully to a better place! I danced a lot back in the day as well but not so much anymore. If I would have known that I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself! 🙃 It is funny because it's true.
@@irenecarhart I am from a Scots/Irish family,my grandfather moved here as he was on the run,he was to be executed by firing squad,my grandfather was fighting the British after they burnt the family farm down looking for weapons (that were not there) sadly this activity by British forces made young lads in Ireland join the IRA in the late part of the 20th century. My grandfather told me he had to fight back in some way at the family having the farm burnt down,I can't argue with that...I felt really sad when you said you had no family...tell you what Irene, after a recent car accident I prob will be joining you up in the great dancehall in the sky my family is your family and I hope youl have that dance with me..ps the place in Scotland where I was brought up is a little town called Falkirk....best wishes Sean
It is nice to see the young people back then dance to the music it was so lively and they were so happy, all races and colors together, something that is kind of rare in a way today.
About 1:28 the young lady in the white top and dark skirt was definitely the queen of the ball. What a cutie. Great dancer, a pleasure to watch. I hope she is still alive and well with a house full grand kids and great grand kids. Those were great times...
I'm 73 now and the only music I can listen to is from the 60s what a fantastic decade.i watch and listen and remember the great times when everyone was well dressed without studs in their faces and other crap , what a great country it was then, miss it so much all the best to all the 60s people enjoy remembering the fantastic days
I've tried to live life as it comes--74 now. I didn't want to sound like my parents living in the forties all the time. But when I watched this today, I got the first feeling that it was much better then and that I would give anything to be there. Anywhere other than where we've wound up with all the technology, rap un-music, entitled people, millennials, outspoken idiots, etc. I haven't bought an album since the 80s. That's when they stopped making music.
The boogie moves and energy are contagious! Not being of this generation Mr. Montez is heard of in many generational performers. This banger among many of his others are simply magnificent🎉 Bravo
@@corntastrophy - And CANE SUGAR was used in soft drinks AND NOT HUGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!! Everyone drank Coke, etc. then. But as we know, cane sugar is more expensive.
@@robertbullock9554 your body processes all sugar the same, it's just high fructose corn syrup is the cheapest and unhealthiest. cane sugar soda does taste good though
@@corntastrophy -Thank you...but no one questions that and it's not really a triviality...a corollary (no pun intended) to important issues of the day.
This song was so popular that Chris's band was the headliner at shows in the United Kingdom, about 1962. This song was almost a forerunner to modern Pop and Rock music. The opening act was a growing, wannabe popular group called the Beatles. The Beatles had only released a few not very big or very popular single records by then. No albums. One of Chris's high school friends was Brian Wilson. Chris later helped out the Beach Boys with some of their songs. Chris also went to a Ritchie Valens concert to hear his idol sing, and actually accidentally bumped into and talked to Valens during a break at the show. A charmed life indeed !
I always wondered why someone didn't open seniors only/baby boomers dance clubs and just play only the baby boomer OLDIES. going to the city's or county senior citizens' dances is NOT the same as clubs (of course sans booze.) Wheelchairs, canes, walkers, etc welcome!🎈
It's too late! Those times will only live in the memories of those who lived in 1950s/60s. The World has now changed so much. However. us oldies can be taken back to those times whenever there is the music that we used to sing along with or dance to.
Always loved this song, since I first heard it in the movie Animal House (1978)..the food fight scene 😂.. was a teenager at the time the movie came out.. Let's Dance is a 60's classic
Desde Chile Soy de esa Época. Tiempos Maravillosos Diversión Sana. Ni siquiera se fumaba Cigarrillo. Nadie andaba con Armas como ahora. Nadie pensaba en matar a Nadie. Eran otros Tiempos. Nadie se emborrachaba. Qué Felicidad. Éramos Felices sólo bailando.
He was an amazing person.even though his song made me cry because whenever I get a notification for this song I love it because it helps me recall my late wife of which tears run down my eyes how are you today? Well, my name is Harvey can we Be friend🌺🌺
didn't we though. i'm 70 and my girls love to dance with me. jive, waltz, chalipso, pony. we have a great time at weddings, just not enough places to dance anymore.
Me & my brother used to play my mums Chris Montez LP on 75bpm. It made us laugh so much. This song will always remind me of them both. 20yrs this July my mum passed and 10yrs have come & gone since my brother passed. This song still makes me smile as it brings back great memories as a young kid.
Wow! Going to the dance growing up and seeing these older ( seniors) girls with their perfect Breck Girl hair and sweater dresses just mesmerizing! God it was fun!
This is masterful! The talent it took to put this all together boggles the old mind. Great music. I have played it a dozen times, as I lived through those eras and recall the movies. We will never see the likes of them again.
I’m 50 yrs old my grand pa use to play this and a bunch others now I play em with my 8 yr old daughter and we dance like this 🤣😂🤣 Miss you granddad- served 1941-1965 Army 4th infantry division
This hit from Chris Montez went to #4 on the Top 40 charts. It went to #15 on the Rhythm & Blues charts. Outside the US, it went to #1 in Belgium, #2 in Norway and the United Kingdom, #3 in The Netherlands, #4 in New Zealand, #7 in West Germany, and #12 in Austria. It would finish at #68 for the year, 1962.
I play bluegrass and was playing at an American Legion..My mom got up and was gliding across the floor with her 1950s style moves like these ladies and I had to tell some of the old men my mama was married lol..When I hear this old rock and roll music I think of her cause she listened to it all the time and danced lol
This brings back so many memories. I actually went to bandstand when they were here in California and got to know so many great people. I enjoy watching these because I am in my seventies
One of my favourite dance tunes from the sixties. I remember dancing to it in the school hall in 1962 - the year of the big freeze in the UK. Or was it 1963? Long time ago!
+Ann TwoShoes I agree ,and the year of the big freeze was 1962 , as i was going out with my girl friend and we would sit for hours on my m/bike in the snow !
+Ann TwoShoes Yeah, the Big Freeze of the 1962-63 winter. Great times, back then, with such fabulous records in the charts, and lots more to come as the Sixties progressed.
Ann TwoShoes - As far as I can tell, this song was first released in the U.S.A. in June, 1962. The Big Freeze started in the U.K. around Christmas, 1962.
This song never gets old. Love it. Why can't we go back. We went to so many dances back then. It was so much FUN. Now the kids have their faces buried in phones and video games. It's a shame they dont have the fun we had. Let's GO BACK PLEASE. Love this music. .🥰🥰🥰🥰💜😍
I love this music my grandad always played 50s and 60s music when i was growing up and i am to be married this year september 2019 :) and i am thinking of having this brillant song, that i love so much as me and my partners first dance plus i think that would put a smile on my grandad and nans face get everyone up and dancing
Chris Montez toured the UK in 1962 on the strength of this cracking song. In Gloucester, about 120 miles west of London, he had this totally unknown support band called The Beatles. Chris had never heard of them. Nor had the local newspaper reporter, whose main interest was in Chris Montez, the hot new American star. Out of professional concern for accuracy the reporter got this unknown Brit group to write their names in his notebook, thus getting perhaps the first set of Beatles autographs. A few weeks later he threw the notebook away....
Chris Montez should be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. It is a travesty that he isn't a member. I want to express my gratitude to Mr. Montez for joining me in my worldwide campaign to buckle up. Number 58 of the Kansas City Chiefs is the reason I always buckle up. I try my best to honor his legacy each day. May he rest in eternal peace. Please always buckle up when you are inside of a vehicle. God bless you. Love, Uncle Tom.
how cool to have your contribution to pop culture to be an appearance on one of these shows as a teenager ..... you can go online and show your grand kids how you were on the cutting edge of cool back in the day!
