I love your breakdown of the movie! This is definitely one of those movies you talk about a ton right after you see it because of the themes & hype surrounding it. I liked it but agree the story kinda fell off towards the end. I’m interested to see more from Oz Perkins. It’s so cool his dad played Norman Bates 😭
Thank you! And yeah Oz is great, I think this movie was good even with it's shortcomings, they were just a bit glaring for me but still have alot of love for his work that I've seen thus far, and will definitely continue to support whatever he decides to do going forward. I appreciate just the ability to create different and inventive things, whether they're perfect or not it's still an impressive feat. Thank you for watching the video!
this video basically sums up my thoughts on the film. i study visual storytelling (with intentions to go into storyboarding) and i ADORED this movie from a visual standpoint. i also went in blind with zero expectations besides “hey i heard this was good!” having seen minimal marketing materials. it absolutely hooked me until the late exposition dump in the ending. it honestly makes me kinda mad because it was so perfect up until that point lol.
@@beatsofangel yeah alot of people who went in blind definitely have a different somewhat better perspective on the film, kinda wish i would’ve had that luxury lol
Those scenes where she’s at her desk alone at night and we’re looking back behind her shoulder at an open door to an empty room… so much anxiety just expecting something to appear.
This is quality content. This video, for me, acts as almost an introduction to your channel and i will definitely catch up on what you’ve uploaded before. I tend to never really know how to put my internalized feelings and thoughts on a movie into my own words and then i come across a video like this where it’s spot-on what i wanna say and sometimes even learn new ways to look at a movie. you’re an insightful guy and i hope you achieve your movie production dream. i look forward to more of your content, my guy
@@schmatt_ Wow, man I really appreciate this comment. Your thoughtful words mean alot, and I’m just happy you got some value out of the video. Thank you for subscribing, and thank you for watching, and a huge thank you for this comment. Really made my day!
The promotional ARG with the Birthday Murders website and everything is so great. I love how we are starting to see storytelling methods long used on the internet make their way into film like this.
I think the hype/promo around this film did build up people's expectations of Cage's performance to an unachievable degree. I feel like the same criticisms of his character (that when you step back from the atmosphere of the movie what he's doing is kind of silly) could also be said of Levine's performance as Buffalo Bill in SotL. I think it's a film that's going to age better the further it gets away from its original marketing hype.
@@PandaEff This is a really great point and a stellar comparison! You’re right, the actions of Buffalo can be viewed as odd for sure, I think the difference for me is just the fact that his character was a bit more realistic, and that film didn’t really on as much mysticism as Longlegs. That made him, even in his oddness, feel all the more real and dangerous which ended up making him more creepy even in those moments that were silly. They are close though though in how they’re portrayed, I just think Buffalo Bill was given a different air than Longlegs, mainly due to the fact of how he got framed in the film. Still, I really love this point and I could definitely see myself watching this down the line and getting a different vibe from it! Thanks for watching!
This was a great video! I agree that this movie is nothing like Seven or Silence of the Lambs, but for a fundamentally different reason than yours--diagetically, those are mundane, and this is actually truly satanic. I have noticed a lot of people saying, like you, that Longlegs is not scary. But for me, it was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. I have a theory that this interpretation depends on if the viewer is an atheist. I am, and Longlegs scared me because as the story evolves, it becomes clear that Lee has had zero control over anything that has ever happened in her entire life. To me, that is fundamentally terrifying. The film made me feel very similar to how I felt watching The Lodge, albeit not the same. Curious to hear other thoughts. To me, the only real flaw in the movie is that Lee's boss doesn't remember his daughter's birthday. Overall I can't wait to watch your channel continue to grow. When you can afford it, I would suggest upping your production value just a little--camera, microphone, and a better spot to film.
@@MastigosAtLarge Whoa! Thank you for such a unique perspective! I think from my perspective in a real world sense I can agree on how terrifying it is, I think in a movie sense I may just be a bit numb or not as emotionally impacted to certain things that are done here, just because tonally or visually it just didn’t hit me in the same way that stimuli from other movies have. I’ve kind of seen a number of very dark, very disturbing films and so for me while the backdrop of this is certainly disturbing, I think how it comes across in the film feels less so. But I think with your understanding I completely get why you’d feel differently, and that’s for sure valid as well. And thanks for the kind words and tuning in at all! I’ll definitely keep that in mind as I keep building this thing out! Thanks again!
@@MarsHogan So happy to have found you! And I totally understand. Most of what I read and watch is the highly disturbing stuff (side note, please review Stopmotion! And check out Eric LaRocca's books if you haven't yet!). But a lot of that stuff doesn't phase me much now--I'm always searching for more because of aesthetic and vibe. But like. The Lodge, I don't need to watch again, if that makes sense (unless my 6 m/o and 3 y/o want me to watch it with them when they're older). THAT movie terrified me. THAT movie made me feel gross and on edge and almost haunted. I am also a survivor of CSA and I'm autistic, so the loss of control fear I have could largely come from either/both of those. But yeah. I don't believe in god or the devil. Like Lee. And if I, in real like, discovered irrefutable evidence that either one not only WAS real, but also had decided and steered everything in my life, that would shake me to my core. Everything down to Lee having enough bullets to do 2/3 of killing her boss, killing her mom, and destroying the doll, but not all three. So the film leaves us knowing that the cycle continues, with Lee if the protector role and Ruby in hers.
After doing some reading, I think the doll was actually delivered to the Carter's house days before the investigation started. Therefore it already had an impact on the Boss and meant that he wasn't gonna mention it at all because he was already under it's influence. But if you reject that, then there's a lot of reading I saw people do into his behaviour that shows that he made the connection and was stressed about it. So it could be either way, but it fits the world of the film more so that he was in a trance all along.
Really fair analysis. I really liked it, but yeah there were some shortcomings. I missed out on most of the marketing so I didn't have those kind of expectations.
i actually think that dale being caught like that is telling us that he was being controlled and he was being made to basically just sit there and wait to be caught and then he knew he was supposed to say certain things and get lee to be on the right track before killing himself…i think that these events were always meant to happen and satan was telling dale what to do but he was always pulling the strings with Lee and even more so now that it seems like she could be fulfilling the longlegs mission…like she could be the third head that rose from the sea and be the false profit
@@brynniefresh9746 i actually love this idea, and it makes sense as to why they would disseminate the information so easily. i still think in the frame of the film, they could have accomplished this without making some of the through lines so obvious and readily apparent. i think a bit more of an actual reveal that the audience may have felt but wasn’t openly aware of would have been more effective. what you’re saying as the driving force though definitely makes total sense and is a really solid theory, im sure it was probably in the back of Perkins mind. thanks for watching!
@@MarsHogan I also feel like everything coming so easy to Lee is because of her being somewhat controlled by the devil or longlegs or both…like I heard someone say that you don’t really see how she does anything it’s just done, and that’s totally true it doesn’t walk you through much…i think that’s supposed to be her connection to the killer that’s making everything so simple, like the cipher…but the movie does feel super heavy handed in how they hint at it being her mom and then her mom literally explains it…but i think it would be really easy to fix tbh i think showing everything at the end would be good, Lee’s memories all flooding back, and then instead of her mom describing everything she would be reciting a nursery rhyme or singing her a song? i feel like that would have given us no doubt about what happened but also it def wasn’t necessary to have her tell baby Lee like bro why would you tell ur 9 year old u are helping murder people lmao
@@brynniefresh9746 No this is exactly it! We kind of got this in that scene where her doll got broken, it kind of served as her ability of premonition that she seemed to have throughout the film. I thought to myself this would have been good if they would have actually placed some more focus on the fact that she had some kind of ability throughout the movie. Because to me like you said, things just kind of happened but it wasn't really ever focused on like that. I think there was just a misappropriation of where our attention should be as an audience, and it was laid out for us to focus on things that we could have waited to find out, but it didn't have us focus on the things that would have given us an opportunity to want to dig deeper into what Lee had going on. These are very small and simple changes but still could have changed how the entire thing was received
I'm commenting my little theory on your video bc you asked so nicely 😂 but I think that all of Oz Perkin's movies are just different people being played with by the same devil. Like he's just following that one shadowy Satan character on different adventures every time
@@evil0teacup i love this theory! i can definitely see that especially when i think back to black coats daughter, this is a great idea and makes alot of sense highkey lol thanks for watching!
@MarsHogan thanks! I'm a huge horror buff and one of my favorite parts is the RU-vid binge I get to have afterwards. I really enjoyed your analysis and I'm glad the algorithm shot you my way!
Very big fan of this movie, but I will say I’m more of a fan of the production & the details The story for me wasn’t as strong as the overall vibe of the movie while that does take away from it in an odd way I think it also makes it very unique
@@lukethesap great points, and this is exactly what i was getting at with tone and how impactful it was as opposed to some of the story elements and how the actual movie plays out. thanks for watching!
