Yeah, I actually cried over 7 times while reading it.

"For you a thousand times over" That sentence made me cry so much, all of Hassan was good and pure. The love and devotion he had for amir was one of the purest I've ever read. It made me so proud yet heartbroken for them both. It really grounded me (which I quite often need) when he goes into detail about the Soviets, the culture change, the taliban - it reminded me that I need to learn more about other cultures. So I did exactly that! I love learning anything about different cultures and their histories. This book was an emotional roller coaster, I'll admit khaleds writing style even had me cry with laughter in some parts but I'd then be sobbing by the next page. Some parts I had to put the book down, so angry with amir. I absolutely loved this book and rate jt in my top ten!

As an Afghan, when I grew up knowing that when I read this book I would love it and it lived up to my expectations. The family aspect is a thousand percent true, afghans are such loyal friends even though everything. Though I was not born in Afghanistan, the mention of kite contests where still so symbolic to me since my father loves them and tells me stories all the time. I remember reading this book and after having to listen to hype Afghan songs for hours so I wouldn’t cry. Such a beautiful story indeed ❤️

I just finished it in 2022.....loved it full of emotions it made me terrified on a meeting between amir and assef(talib), happy on amir and Soraya's wedding, sad on hassan's rape scene and emotional on Baba's death..gave me lesson that "It's never late to be good again".☺️

I'm a little late. Love your honest review, I've cried too many times throughout this book, it took me less than 24 hours to complete, hooked since it was so captivating and well written out but I feel afraid to face another title from this author if it's sadness on that level. My fondness for Hassan and his son was too real.. Their innocent souls. Amazing book.

i read this in high school and loved it, so i tried reading a thousand splendid suns. i actually found a thousand splendid suns to be even more depressing than the kite runner, so much so that i couldn't even finish it. it was certainly well written though and i will probably try to pick it up again and finish it.

In school we got to choose between Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I read A Thousand Splendid Suns and like you said with Kite Runner the imagery in the book is amazing and the book overall is phenomenal. I like with each book it is similar but totally different for instance A Thousand Splendid Suns follows two women instead of males so you get two different perspectives however a similarly heart wrenching felt story. Totally recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns. Kite Runner is on my shelf TBR.

Both my parents are from Afghanistan. They have told me some pretty fucled up stories from there. My grandad and three of his sons from my moms side got kidnapped and never returned. My dad got kidnapped by the military but he managed to desert the army. And then all the ethnic descrimination that they both experienced.

We read this book last summer in school, and to be honest, it's probably the only book that we read in secondary school, that I actually finished. It is so heartbreaking and especially the scenes where the illness of Baba is were some of the hardest ones for me. Because it is so real, like the way his illness is described is also how it actually happens and that got to me real hard since I have seen that happen.

Sorry but I genuinely disagree. I hated this book. In my eyes there was little to no characterization in this book, except maybe for Baba, however his change was a little forced and was too little too late. The redemption story did almost nothing for me. In the end I still hated Amir. When you realize that for a while Amir wanted kids, and couldn't have any and was a little spiteful and had very little empathy for Sohrab because he didn't talk and was shy. Well it doesn't help his case.

lol, just watched this video. It’s currently 2020, in the corona virus out break. My hippy english teacher had us read this during remote learning. Hearing your honest opinions was super interesting and I now have a better understanding of the book. I typically don’t read books, I know how horrible it sounds but it’s just so boring to me. There have been a few books that have genuinely caught my interest but not that many. I do however read comic books, I love those A LOT. I was in an SAT prep course and we were talking about books we’ve read. I told the woman running the course that I enjoy reading comic books, but not regular books. She told me I wasn’t going to go to college. About a year later, I got accepted into my top school and that’s where I hope to be going in the fall. Lol sorry for the long comment, just wanted to share.

'A Thousand Splendid Suns' is arguably, in my opinion, better than the Kite Runner. On my part I found The Kite Runner to be heart-wrenching but it also made me a little angry. Amir's redemption seems to me a bit forced, a bit too contrived, a bit too easy for the magnitude of his erring. There are some things in this world that have no forgiveness. But then again, it is hard to remain angry over Hosseini's beautiful writing and language. Although I may not fully agree with his direction I can appreciate what he did with it. It has its flaws, but it's a book I'd recommend to anyone.

Husseini is a pashtun writing the voice of a Hazara whom the pashtuns see as enemies and inferior. It is like if a white man writes the voice of Hassan as a black person. All the powerful characters are pashtuns and all the submissive, naive are hazaras. I dont know how people would feel if a white man wrote a novel today about black people and painting them as submissive, flat, lame, hare-lipped, no sense of changing their situation? This is the most horrifyingly one sided novel I have ever read. since it is written for the western audience who know nothing about the Hazara-Pashtun history, they assume to see Pashtun as rounded characters (heroic, bad, savior, kind, rebels etc..) while Hazaras as nothing but submissive, accepting and naive... The reality is far from that. In fact, Hazaras are porportionally more educated in the country. Husseini as a Pashtun is obviously biased and harbours tacit and subconscious racism.
