Let's FINISH this Horizontal Stabilizer (Ep4)

At the 5:27 timeline you will see me and Brian carrying the skin. What you CAN'T see is that the 10' 2x4 is in the middle of the skin. So we are actually holding the 2x4 and the skin is draped over the 2x4. This was a great way to carry the skin without it kinking!
In the rest of this video, we will completely finish the Zenith CH-750 Super Duty horizontal stabilizer.
As always, please SUBSCRIBE and give the video a thumbs up!

Thanks for doing this Mark. I love your attention to detail! ...and I like the way you think; looking at the completed parts can be half the fun. When we talked on Saturday, I didn’t understand your comment about using the file, but it makes perfect sense now. Looking forward to your passing me up so I can improve my build! Look forward to the next video.

What is the part number for the nut plates you are using?
@joncrew9456
@joncrew9456 3 года назад
Mark: For those close clearance rivet pulls, I use a 3/4 x 3/4 piece of aluminum wedge about 3/16 thick on the back side with the mandrill size hole in the middle. Bend the mandrill over a bit, slide the wedge over and pull the rivet. Sometimes I modify the rivet gun head piece by grinding the required clearance. I just take a piece of scrap and cut the wedge on the band saw. take an old drill of larger size grinding it to the proper cup size to equal the zenith cup on their rivet tips

@thomasaltruda 3 года назад
jon crew I was going to recommend the same thing! Google Vans section 5, which contain all sorts of tips and tricks, and you’ll see they use a wedge that they call AEX for this exact situation!

Being exRAF I would always put bolt head in the say way as you did and screw slots as it not only looks good it helps visual checks to see if there is movement (so not just OCD). The nut plate there can only be for something with a low load factor so a light camera mount as not wide enough for a fence.

I never thought about it being a good way to see if a bolt turned. I like that-I will now say that's why I'm doing it instead of saying because I'm crazy!

Ha! I knew I couldn’t be the only one that lines up bolt heads when possible. It’s also the reason why I love stainless round-head torx fasteners. Far less work.
@thomasaltruda
@thomasaltruda 3 года назад
MX after 30 yeah but your stainless bolts don’t have the same properties as an AN cad plated bolt. Also, although stainless is corrosion resistant, when touching aluminum, it will cause severe corrosion on the aluminum without some form of sealant barrier between the two. A cad plated AN bolt really is the better choice here.
@AnonyMous-jf4lc
@AnonyMous-jf4lc 3 года назад
@@thomasaltruda totally agree for that application. I was not suggesting that the bolts be changed or altered. That is also why I stated I line up bolt heads as well. I do love when the application permits, or is supplied, with nice shiny stainless round head torx. No extra alignment work needed to calm my ocd.

Great video and series, looking forward to seeing the end result! Question though, you’ve been very meticulous about priming the parts, why did you prime the area of where you scratched the skin and not the whole thing?
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 года назад
Because I'm not paranoid about primer. I'm just adding some extra protection incase the airplane ends up in an environment that I'd want to have it. It's a balance between priming every single part vs weight vs money, etc... Without the wing skins fully primed, my airplane probably will only last about 150 years.

Is this removing the stabiliser skin and deburring the holes both on ribs and the skins really neccessary, or are you just very neat with your work? Can it cause problems if I drill the holes and rivet them right in?

Just take two pieces of thin scrap aluminum and put them on top of each other. Now drill a #20 through them, take them apart, and feel both sides of the holes. Use your judgement-do you think the holes should be deburred?
