Finally, a comparison video with reference prices. You could do a series with literally everything for a home, garage doors, cabinets, rim, drywall finishes, stucco, etc. that would be a golden collection of knowledge for homeowners designing their home.

Matt I was one of the 3 guys you met in L A at the Brewery! Thank You so much for the invite back then!!! Next time you need to have your folks publicize an Los Angeles appearance much better and have a much bigger meet and great! You are one of the most humble guys in the trades I have ever met and liked how you spoke with us like we were just one of the guys and you checked out guys work and social media in order to lift them up! This video is one of your best videos because of the large amount of information you and your sponsor for it provided to the viewers. There is such a large audience for Building Science and QUALITY Building Products & Processes which builders in SoCalif just are not aware of the benifits, must in the business just think those practices are for the multi-million dollar homes. My daughter & SIL just had a $3million tract home built and it has many of your ideas, but clearly could use many more - in ALL aspects of home building. So many SoCalif Contractors types say, we don’t need to do THAT Here… it’s not that cold, wet, hot… For the most part builders here don’t actually use ideas you teach because they cut costs everywhere they can!!! Next time you come here to SoCalif, tell us sooner, do stuff like in this video and lets get a huge crowd of builders together that are ready to learn and grow in their endeavors!!!

Good to talk about price and I liked that you quickly made mention of whether some units were thermally-broken (every exterior unit should be IMO) but perhaps some mention of the overall efficiency? You spend a lot of time talking about building passive houses and being as airtight as possible - are these units just pretty or can they be used as part of a high-performance home?
@dushk0
@dushk0 Год назад
It's aluminium separated by anything between 2 to 10 mm of foam which may not be that well insulating (rather focused on strength). Then again, just like vinyl frames, the profile is extruded in a way that it provides multiple boundary layers (how multiple glass panes work). Still the thermal break is not really complete and 2 mm thick aluminium all around is all you need for a massive thermal bridge. So despite the greater glass to frame ratio, the overall product performs with triple glass roughly the same as a basic (old design) double pane vinyl over here in Europe (if memory serves me correctly). Then again, the tested R/U values show mostly how the test performs, in the "wild" boundary layers play a role, so do occupants' habits, so as long as they seal alright and you really want them, it's all well... unless you mind paying more for less on the thermal side of matters. Those nice dark frames are better shaded from the summer sun, as there's a reason they don't come in vinyl (it would melt).

I'm still amazed how little love Canadian fiberglass windows get. I paid way less for triple pane fiberglass windows from Accurate Dorwin and Inline than what I would have paid for American or European windows, and they have been great. An inline triple pane tilt-turn window was literally 3 times less than a Kolbe or Marvin tilt-turn, many of which were only available in wood, which review after review complained about rot. Marvin Essential feels darn cheap compared to Inline / Accurate Dorwin, which feel like a vault when you're shutting a tilt turn.

@15:47 you’re talking about the pin-hole in the hinge mechanism. In Europe these are often used on hinges with pins as pivot points at the outside (no sure how to call these). When a intruder removes the pins on the outside they cannot remove or hinge the door to lift it out and thus enter the home without the key….

Very cool doors! These types of products are so pricey that combining with the cost of building nowadays would limit other more relevant home improvements such as upgraded insulation, sound proofed windows, and many others. Additionally these doors long-term would most likely perform poorly as a thermal insulator unless they have figured out new ways of keeping Argon from leaking.......

Glad he points out that the cost of these products are the just the products. You’ll need to take into consideration the additional materials labor etc. If adding a header to support those bigs doors, that brings the project up quite a bit.

For such windows something that tilts out would be fine, since the goal is to get some airflow instead of climbing through the window. If they exist, where could I find them? Every window has four numbers on a National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label on every window you'll consider: o Solar heat gain - how much the window reduces the solar heat gain. o U-value - how much heat transfer the window has at a given temperature differential. o Air infiltration - how much air infiltration the window has. o Visible light transmission U-Factor This number represents the heat transfer coefficient, or how much heat the window’s coatings help keep inside the home. The U-factor ranges from 0.1 to 1.2; the lower the number, the less heat escapes. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient This number measures how well a product keeps heat from the sun from penetrating the window. The range is 0 to 1. If you live in a hot, sunny climate, such as Arizona’s, you will want a low number to block out heat; if you live in a colder climate, you’ll want a high number to take advantage of whatever solar heat is available. If you live in a balanced climate, where winters are cold and summers are hot, you’ll want a solar heat gain coefficient rating of around 0.3 (the same goes for the U-factor). And you may want windows with different ratings for different parts of your house, depending on the direction the window faces and whether it gets a lot of sun or shade. Air Leakage This is how much outside air will come through the window frame, according to the NFRC’s testing. The lower the number, the better. (The range here is less than or equal to 0.1 to 0.3.) In our tests, we take this a step further by testing windows at very low temperatures with high wind conditions to see if there are any changes in performance due to materials expanding and contracting. Also look at the installation warranty...is it longer than 2 years?

If you have you original wood windows in your old house you should restore them instead of replacing them. You'll never get your ROI after spending 20k+ on new windows.

Exactly, glass, seals. Then again, new hardware just works better.

Where are the inswing folding doors though? I got 2 10 wide 8 high openings between my kitchen and my (soon to be) greenhouse. If they swing in the whole assembly sits within the 2' thick stone wall area and doesn't interfere with the contents of my greenhouse...

ProVia has vinyl in black, so it would be great if you could not cater to the big brands that are soaking people, and talk a bit about brands that are selling great, efficient products. ProVia finds it very easy to surpass Andersen's energy ratings, and it happens to be one of the windows that we take out because they are rotten.

Window and glass don't have the R- value a wall does. Keep them small and with multiple layers.

Standard building logic applies here: Avoid round/non-rectangular shapes, avoid organic materials on the exterior, go thermally insulative. After that, price will probably be the deciding factor.

You could consider that an entry level door and price… never mind the install price and what’s needed to support all that tempered glass

Those accordion doors. Good thing about California. No mosquitoes. But still plenty of blood suckers.
