Kondor needs higher gantry side walls. So I thought why not make them from steel. Turns out, that is quite feasible indeed. By no means is this highly productive, but its good fun.
Cutting data and tool information in the video
Brief info on the machine:
CNC router made from Aluminium extrusion and plate
Roughly 675x1250x200mm working volume
Driven by 400W Delta Servos
Spindle: Jianken JGL80-2.2 ISO20 on VFD Hitachi WJ200
Controlled through linuxCNC

Awesome! You seem to really have figured out your speeds and feeds... best i've seen so far! Still trying to get there for steel.

Thank you for the speed and feeds! I like those Holex prosteel, too.

Very nice! I have not tried steel on my machine but I think I should give it a try, seeing your success.

Go for it! Start gently, do some testing and you may be fine. Good luck!

Nice work cutting steel! I'm currently setting up a custom CNC using B2 400W drives, and am looking forward to figuring out the dual Y gantry setup. Especially with a single-sided homing sensor on the driven ballscrews! Hope to see more vids of your setup when your time allows!
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills 2 года назад
Depending on the control Software this is not too bad. With linuxcnc 2.8 this works quite well. I recommend one homing sensor per driven axis, so that offsets can be used to square XY

@@MinistryofBrokenEndMills thanks for the quick reply! I'm running 2.9 on Bullseye, so it should be just fine. I'll definitely add another endstop to the second Y ballscrew drive when I can allow for it, in order to correct for gantry racking. Cheers!
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills 2 года назад
@@solverbox Maybe I am misunderstanding. You absolutely need a second stop, otherwise, you will have a bad time getting this to work as you lack a reference. Good luck!

@@MinistryofBrokenEndMills yup, gotcha on that one. The frame was built by another hobbyist, and I'm currently upgrading it with my own control and modifications. Independent homing of each driven axis is definitely on my list of requirements.

awsome video. i have a solid 4x8 cnc router that im wanting to mill steel with. i already slay aluminum daily with it. putting plasma table up for sale. wanna start cutting my steel plate with the router. and if for some reason i cant il out source it to my friend with a laser. im gona check out hoffmanns tooling. hope to see some more awsome videos like this one,

Nice! But which stepper motor do you use?
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills Год назад
These are not steppers but Delta ASD-A2 Servos with 400W on all axis.

Hey what air blast are you using?

It's an MQL System based on a peristaltic pump. Sold by end cnc and is named ColdEND: www.end-cnc-shop.de/coldend-sets/

Hey! Awesome build! Two questions. Do you think the machine would loose any capability/gain issues by lengthening the X axis to allow for 1m usable surface? And two, would you be willing to share the side plates design?
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills 6 месяцев назад
Hi, the original design this is based on has not been released. Accordingly I will not release it myself. However, I guess the photos help in designing your own. Linear trucks apart as far as feasible, spindle centreline as close to the linear trucks as possible (defines the slant angle) and as high as necessary within reason. Regarding a longer x axis: difficult to say as it depends on what want to do. I guess it would be alright. However, keep in mind that this particular machine noch only uses a 200x80 heavy beam but also has 10mm aluminium bolted and glued to it. At 1000mm the sag will be real. Length of the ball screw shouldn’t be an issue.

@@MinistryofBrokenEndMills thank you for the feedback. I would generally use it for wood, but would like to do the occasional steel milling just like you did with the side plates.

The same as for roughing the outside with adaptive. Hoffmann Holex Pro Steel 203044 8mm - in hindsight: 6mm would have been easier.

@@MinistryofBrokenEndMills Still happy with it? I am looking into an ATC spindle these days and between you and Fox, Jianken may be the ticket. I also have 3 Delta B2s I need to put on a stepper driven machine. But had a tuning issue when I first tried and my circles turned oval. So, pulled them again and went back to the steppers until I can find more time to deal with this:)

What is the spindle max and min speed?
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills Год назад
Max is 24kRPM, min: depends on the vfd - down to 4500 rpm was ok; 6k is advisable

What rpm is apindle running on ?
@MinistryofBrokenEndMills

You can calc the rpm from vc and the tool diameter. Somewhere between 5800 and 8000 rpm.

Apologies for the late reply: Yeah, I got that a lot. It worked fine though and thus I am not complaining. Made workholding easy and the cutting forces are minimal anyways:).
