I have a great 2.5 inch ruler that I use to make jelly roll strips from my scraps. Then i use the jelly roll pattern books for pattern ideas. It's a great way to use scraps!
It is a great idea! I have a video on that, too! Here's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ay7XqwDOQXI.htmlsi=1cDsBOI5uGuagFVz So much fun to use those scraps!
It doesn’t even look like you used anything from your scrap bin but you have a huge pile to work with there!! I love this idea! I think you are right… if I cut my scraps into precuts I likely would use them more!
Brilliant, Kris! So simple that I was wondering what you could possibly say about cutting 10” squares. I can’t believe how fast you turned a pile of unrelated fabrics into an inspiring collection! Thank you!!!
I cut my scraps into precut sizes but I've never sorted them by color. It sounds like a great winter project!! I never would have thought to save my layer cake cardboard & adding tape!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
I want one of those side lock rulers!! That looks fantastic. I have problems keeping rulers from slipping and looks like a great solution to that issue.
I am relatively new to quilting, have been a sewist for a lot of years. The cutting is the hardest part for me, and I especially struggle with cutting the larger sizes well. Thank you for demonstrating several ways that I can try and see which works best for me.
Welcome to the world of quilting! I am thrilled that you found this video so helpful! Please let me know if there is any way I can continue to help you on your journey. ❤️
Excellent idea! And I love the way you coordinated the fabrics and especially that you did not include half lights and half darks. Your layer cake blocks will show up evenly. One thing I try to avoid in my quilting is having disappearing blocks, which happens when someone uses the lights to make a block because they ran out of darker squares. 8:32
I thought you were going to make 10 inch layer cakes from smaller scraps but the results were great. I hadn't thought of doing that myself. I do have a lot of halfs though 😊
Great video on making your own layer cake from stash. You got me thinking about themes- novelty, flowers, colors, and more. And wrapping them on a recycled layer xake board wrapped with machine tape- genius. I have a lot of fat quarters that could be repurposed tjis way to grab an use. Thanks
LOVE IT! Yes, this would work for all of these! So glad you love the idea. It really is wonderfully convenient. I used to cut all my scraps into uniform sizes like 5" and 10," but I wouldn't use them until I started doing this. It is so helpful to just grab and go. 🥰
Wonderful scrap buster. I may have just a few (insert eye roll) scraps I could use to make my own layer cake. Could you tell us, what does your husband use to cut through your old cutting mats? It's a great idea for reusing them.
You could also do jelly bars 10"×5", etc. ×2 equals 1 halved layer cake square, which could easily b, 2 charm packs, ×42 pieces. Just cut all of them first, and put them in groups after? 10" strips from fq's will make 2 × 10" squares. Put the odd ones in a stack, they are easier to use as is or cut down later. And those fat qs you have had hanging around, you could use to make storage bowls and bags, small gifts etc., or cut them into pre-cuts. Each fq makes plenty of sizes. Or you could just cut up into the larger pre-cut sizes, then you can use them bigger or make them smaller when needed later. Like a 10" strip =2, 10" squares and a scrap, the other 8" can be cut into a 5" and a 2 1/2" half jelly roll strip, or 3 half jr strips, whichever you will be using next. 2× (3 1/2") squares will do ×2 2 1/2" hsts-at-a-time, with trimming room. If you cut 13 inches square, you can cut into 6 1/2" squares for quick 12" finished blocks. Starching before cutting, shrinks fabric slightly and minimises frayed edges, just a bit. If you cut up or fold and stack your scraps they can take less space as well. Odd pre-cuts or random shapes can be handy for a "dry run" on a new block pattern, can be leaders and enders, 4-patches, 9-patches, flying geese, hst's, hourgasses, pinwheels, pieced units, multiple strips or piano key borders, for bonus quilts. Sewn up between your current units, you can get tedious multiples done as you go. E.g. cut up the sashing and cornerstones, and get them sewn together, between seams, as you sew up the blocks, so they're ready to go when you get up to them in your normal process. It's not rocket science as my sister says. Have fun.
Thanks so much for the ideas! I am sure these will help others. Personally, I used to cut all my scraps into precut sizes like you mentioned, and I just never used them. I would have, say, 6 of one fabric in different sizes, and I felt it wasn't an effective way to manage my scraps. I know some people who love doing this, however, and are very successful! For me, it just doesn't work. What does work for me is making my own precut bundles. This makes sense in my brain. I can grab and go with a free pattern and now have to sort through stacks and stacks of precut pieces to make a bundle and then sew. Also, the more you handle the fabrics, the more frayed the edges get. Thank you, however, for these tips! Like I said, I know a lot of quilters who use this method and I am sure certain your thoughts will help others. 🥰
One nice thing about the metric system is that a meter is about 39.4 inches. So here in Canada, when I buy a quarter meter, it's usually at least 10 inches long.
Ok my?? Do you use these layer cakes for “scrap” quilt or patterns? I have SOOOO MUCH FABRIC and I just never get it used! This is an awesome video but I just want to know what to do with these now…. I don’t have the greatest imagination😂😂
I do! I show this particular pack (the pink ones) in this video at around the 13 minute mark: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mAewWhiP-LY.htmlsi=W0szHUIlFEegcZeb I also have a play list of Just One Layer Cake videos. Here's a link: ru-vid.com/group/PLjHvTLWU9QXSbMNmTt_HbTIRsYgb2rVIW Hope these help! Happy Quilting!
Just a little note: You may have a script to your right as you always seem to be looking to the right when you're talking. You may want to consider moving your script a little to your left. I like your tutorials. This is only the 2nd one of yours that I've found, but I really like your conversational style of speaking and you seem to have really nice camera angles so that we can see what you're doing. Great job!
You’re welcome! Great question! I just keep the remainder in the bin until I need them. I used to cut everything up into certain sizes but I found I wouldn’t use them unless they are in a set like this. The pink and purple will eventually grow to a point where I will make more sets.
Hi Kris, im new to your channel...may i know the name of your cutting tool or where can i buy it? Its a really cool tool. Never seen it in my life😅. Reminds me of a pizza cutter😊 Appreciate if you could lemme know❤
Welcome to my channel! It is a rotary cutter and used to cut fabric in quilting. Hope this helps! 🥰 I have a video on how to care for them and how I organize them. Here's a link:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Lsqp65Qsdg.htmlsi=DaXdfKN5L-MH_kKr
I would start with one and see if you like it. Since you have a large stash, one layer cake wouldn't put a dent in it and would give you an idea of how you like it. I also have a lot of video tutorials that use only one layer cake. In fact, I show how I used the pink one in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mAewWhiP-LY.html I hope this helps!
I used to do that, but I found I could never find what I needed.’it didn’t work for me. So now I will only make precut sets like this. If I don’t make the precuts, all the scrap live together by color in harmony making my quilting life easier. 🤩
