Excellent painting!!! Love the technique. I learned a trick for people who do not like blooms. You need a self-healing cutting mat ( like the one Jessie uses in Art Journalling, but large enough to be bigger than the paper. Then get all paints ready. Then wet entire backside do the watercolor paper and have a spray bottle of water near by. Spray the self-healing mat and gently place the watercolor paper (wet side down) on the self-healing mat. What this does is it keeps the paper wetter for a longer time. when you paint, if you have large areas, use a bigger brush like Sarah ended up doing. If the paint on the top bleeds to an area that you don’t want it to, simply use a paper towel and soak it up. I’ve tried it and it works. However, because this tutorial is the full page of paint and taped, I don’t know how it will work as I’ve only tried it with watercolor paintings, such as the otter. Worked perfect! if there is no tape, you can spray water on the self healing mat when it starts to dry. I learned this from The Frugal Crafter on the “Fluffy Duckling” painting.Maybe Sarah can try it and sell large self healing mats in her shop.
Today's painting tutorial is brought to you by the word 'patience' - 5 layers! Not sure I breathed except in between layers when it was drying! The way you showed us how to do this was perfect to follow along - I've tried other negative space tutorials but this is the first one to come out great. Thank you Sarah!
Thank you for your great video. Others I have watched want you to draw everything on your canvas at once, then number each section so you know when to paint each item. What a pain! Your technique is so much better. Best regards, Nancy
My 5-year-old was watching with me while you were talking about food and she noticed how you liked different things. So she sang the Daniel Tiger song: "You like different things, and that's just fine, just remember to be kind." Which was SO fitting with your sign in the back ;).
What an awesome creation. . . . I love the way you teach so meticulously, the amount of pationes you have. Thank you so much for that demonstration. I can't wait to experiment with my brushes. I will keep looking forward to see more of your teaching. Thank you once again. God Bless you.
You two are like lifelong friend or next door neighbors who have grown up and just argue about hilarious stuff like soggy cereal (I'm on team Sarah) and horrible candy (Sorry, Sarah, I can't get on board with Reece's pieces). You two make my heart happy!
Absolutely love these watercolor tutorials, can’t wait to do this one! But I equally LOVE these side conversations! 😂 And I’m with you Sarah... crunchy cereal all the way!!! 🙌🏾
The very first watercolor technique I tried after discovering LMA was this very same tutorial I found on youtube but with typical greens for leaves. It was a great learning experience and opened my eyes to everything watercolor has to offer. I think your tutorials keep getting better and better and I love all the expansion I see happening every month! I continue to do every LMA tutorial but now with tubes instead of the liquids but I feel myself starting to want to experiment with the liquids again. I just love this month's color palette!
I love Mako's tutorials, assuming that's who you are referring to. She's also the one who "introduced" me to watercolors & subsequently my latest love.
This was really enjoyable. Time consuming but so satisfying when it turned out and I took the tape off. Thanks for the challenge. Loved the video and instruction, Sarah! You’re fabulous!
Sarah!!! For 3 years I've avoided "negative painting" because it looked SO dang hard! You've demystified that for me, and I cannot thank you enough! Congrats on cutie pie Arlo, and Keenan...SOGGY cereal? We're going to have to send you to a 12 Step Program! Thank you all for your many gifts, and Sarah, I just love when you're painting because you make my day with your colorful personality! (and the heat gun on border tape works well). THANK YOU!!! Fanna Turano Denver, CO
This has been a very helpful tutorial. Love the banter. Tomatoes in the garden with nothing on it warm from the sun. Cold cereal must be crispy. Brownies need to be undercooked and I want the most in the middlest piece...needing to eat them with a spoon is the best.
I'm a year behind - I'm just doing this one tonight. It was fascinating watching it come to fruition. My hand wasn't as steady as I thought so I was making corrections as I went along, but I feel like I really learned a few things. Thank you, Sarah - but as for cereal, crispy is the only way I eat it! :)
Loved this tutorial! You guys are so fun to listen to. I have to say, i like certain cereals soggy, i.e. Cap'n Crunch, Grape Nuts, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, BUT I have to have Honey Bunches of Oats, Frosted Flakes Crunchy. So you're both right. 🤣 Thanks for a great tutorial!
This looks so fun. I'm a newbie, so I always watch the whole thing first one night after work so I'll be better prepared to actually do it another night. So I'm still in the "listening to you" phase. I can't wait to try this in leaves, but am already thinking about something to paint in monochrome too!
I can't believe these unusual and pretty colors. Just so beautiful. It is awesome indeed. Thank you for these lovely ideas. Great inspiration. Cant wait to try this out. Thanks again. And best wishes to you.
First tutorial with my subscription box... thought I would make it a fun sip and paint with my mom. However, she apparently liked the colors I was mixing because my paint kept dissapearing😂 loved it!
I agree 100% on Friends in the background when I’m doing other things - my go to is to always start on “The One Where Ross Got High” and just let it play forward 😂
Crunchy cereal rules! I actually pour my milk first, then add little amounts of cereal as I go so that I only eat crunchy cereal. You guys are too funny! Love this tutorial - can't wait to try it.
Oh my cereal must be crunchy!!! I pour a little milk at a time so it doesn't get soggy. Tomatoes are at the top of the list of my favorites!!! Good wheat bread, Miracle Whip, and fresh garden tomatoes!!! Best ever !!! Gorgeous painting and I'm so glad you did this!!! I'm rolling that its 6am and I'm listening to soggy vs crunchy cereal!!! ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
@@LetsMakeArt You always make painting look like such fun. I am far from an artist but I love trying. My grandchildren love paint!! They usually want acrylics but I am trying to get them to love Watercolors. I want them to have fun and be creative!! The carrots you painted were so beautiful. I will keep trying those carrots until they look like carrots!! So, I bought a picture of carrots for my kitchen!! Thanks for always being light hearted and fun.
I just happened to stumble across your channel and fell in love with your teaching style. I have seen negative painting tutorials before but you explained it in a way that was easy to understand. Also, not having the video sped up is REALLY helpful to grasp what you are teaching. So nice! Thank you. As for soggy cereal, I am on your side. Milk absolutely must be in perfect proportions to the cereal and only poured on when the last bite will still be crispy. Lol. No apologies necessary for side chatter. It’s hilarious!
You and Keenan are so funny I just watched the video and listened to you two! Thank it was fun ! I'm with you Sara I have a milk to cereal ratio as well my cereal has to be crunchy!
This was SUCH a relaxing tutorial to watch. Loved learning this new technique. Keenan UGH to soggy cereal. Have you tried chocolate covered Oreos? Delicious
I did this with very similar colors to yours-it came out really nice and it was fun to do, i really learned a lot just doing this from brush control, paint water ratio, and how far will X amount of paint cover- super fun to do and i would recommend this project for anyone. Thank you!!
Been waiting for this so long! Thank you, I think this is a n amazing technic. Love crunchy cereal, can't stand Reeses pieces...lol tastes like m M&M s gone terribly wrong! Now I'm waiting for a tutorial on paint a black poodle. I really need to learn to paint curly fur.
Keenan...CRUNCHY. Cap’n CRUNCH, Cinnamon Toast CRUNCH. It’s in the name!!! Sarah, Milk to cereal ratio is sooo important! Also, fruit to cereal ratio is important. Must have at least 1 blueberry per bite! Ha!
You're just so good at breaking down something that looks complicated and making it doable. Also, my favorite dessert/candy combo is peanut butter & chocolate, and Keenan is right, Reese's Pieces are disgusting 😂
Will start this project tomorrow ❤️💚❣️ 1. LOVE me some soggy cereal. 2. Tomatoes from the garden A#1. 3. Our household has a small rule “No Thank You” bites. Instead of saying yuck 🤢 ✌🏼❤️
I did this over the span of a week because kids. I did butterflies, flowers, and leaves. I was adding some line work with a black marker and left it to check on something. I came back and my 2 year old "finished" it up for me. That's what I get for raising little artists.
I love this layering process. Sarah have you done "coffee" painting? That is something I'd love to learn. Btw, Im w Keenan, I live "soggy" cereal😆. And I love love Oatmeal. I prefer Oatmeal actually than Cereal. Do you Guys eat Oatmeal? 😊 And yes, Tomatoes are awesome directly picked from garden. 😊
1. Crunchy cereal 2. Reese's Pieces are my favorite...so crunchy! 3. Love the conversations ALWAYS! Last thing is a question...if you don't have those colors how do you pick colors that will blend well? Or maybe do you just pick one and water it down to lighten it and add less water (or black) for the darker tones? Love this tutorial and am going to do it tomorrow! I like to watch first and then do it on my own...with some sort of noise in the background that I don't need to pay attention to...music, a movie I like but have seen a thousand times or a tv show that I have seen already! I can't create well without that!
The background noise makes perfect sense. As for your colors- You could try this with a variety of colors. Make sure to keep in mind how they will play off each other as they layer. Complimentary colors will often create a brown or almost black color. You could thin down (add a little black to some water and mix on your palette) your black and with a touch of blue for the Paynes Grey.
Sarah and Keenan, I thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial and I just have to say a couple of things. (All positive, don't worry!) 1. I would NEVER mute you guys, lol. Way too much FOMO for that. Your side convos are like a bonus that you just don't get with other watercolor artists! 2. Crunchy cereal (sorry, Keenan.) 3. Love the snack discussion. I was snacking too. I thought I'd try to be healthy, so I was munching on fresh cherries. Well, (And this may be a bit gross, sorry,) as I was painting the pink layer I "lost a pit" and it went skittering along my paper, spreading purple everywhere--but NOT on where I had drawn my leaves!! (SCORE). I was so grateful there was a purple layer coming. LOL. All that to say--your snacks may rebel. Be wary! LOL. OK, bye!! PS: Ooops, I forgot to mention, Sarah, your pink layer was absolutely gorgeous!! LOVED the marble effect your achieved. OK, NOW, bye!! (WAVE)
It was so therapeutic just watching you paint this piece, I will have to do one myself for sure! If I want to use different colours do I have to choose colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel to avoid making mud when I do the layering?
LOO! My husband eats his cereal without milk because he likes it crunchy. My daughter fixes her cereal the night before so it’s like mush for her breakfast. 😂 Could you use a white or black colored pencil instead of a pen? Heating the tape up first works beautifully - I do it all the time.
Totally. They seem a bit looser to me (a bit more similar to a mop brush then the heritage series) but they hold a lot of water and I really enjoyed painting with the Neptune brushes.
Good exercise in negative painting. - You are always fun to watch, but I wish you would use a bigger brush for those large areas! Why not include one in the boxes you offer, or at least have it available for purchase in your shop? They are not expensive, and I think it would help your students a lot to have at least one big brush. Size 12 or 14 with a good point would work wonders. Keep up the good work! 👍👏🎨❤️
We do offer the larger brushes on our site. Sarah tries to use a Round 2 and Round 6 on each of her projects to make it easier for our subscribers who often only have those two on hand.
In the July box, I got two extra mini pads of watercolor paper, are you going to make a tutorial for those or do I just get to do what ever I want with them?
I love this painting & the layering process kind of reminds me of dying batiks. Doing a gradient study by painting Hide & Seek would be fun. Keenan I agree with you, Reece’s Pieces are disgusting!
I really will need to be focused on this project. I can see me painting the leaves vs. background. I love this though.. I am with you Sarah on crisp cereal. I will even add milk as I eat it just so it's not soggy or I am like you I have just the right amount of milk to cereal. . My husband will fix his cereal then fix his coffee.. he likes it soggy. makes me crazy as I hate soggy.
Sarah, in Friends, I identify with Phoebe too. And Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. I know you named your daughter Luna, so I’m thinking we may be INFP kindred spirits. 😁(INFP Myers-Briggs personality type, known for creativeness and quirkiness).
Also have you tried freeze dried skittles?? I have never tried them but saw a group I follow on U-tube and he eats them and orders by the bag full.. They are crunchy.. I think I would love them.. but i have never had skittles so guess I should try them first to see if I do..
PS: I sleep better with dry cereal in bed. My husband gave me the last cup of "Cocoa Puffs." There was some GREAT "Puffs Dust" at the bottom, which I wet fingered up with gusto! One problem: wasn't dust, it was ANTS! (the cereal box had been at the floor in our pantry-who knew ants lived there too and penetrated plastic). EEW EEW EEW!
I've heard that stretching paper is a big pain. Another way to get your paper to lay flat again is to spray the back lightly & lay something heavy on it. I usually put a paper towel between my painting & the heavy item.
Thank you for letting us know Eiren. You can find those products at the following link: www.letsmakeart.com/products/butcher-tray-brushes-bundle They are currently sold out but we expect more brushes to be in stock soon. You can purchase the palette on it's own here: www.letsmakeart.com/products/butcher-tray-palette-medium We do have a few Princeton Heritage brushes in stock as well: www.letsmakeart.com/search?view=spring&q=Princeton+Heritage+round
No you can't paint over a white gell pen, if you do, nothing will happen to the part where you have used the gell pen and the paint will just roll over it!
I would really appreciate it if you would provide a couple of alternatives for each color you are using. I already have a lot of paints, and would like to know which ones I could use instead of the color names you have listed.I understand that you want to sell your kits, but some of us already have a lot of supplies. We can support you by buying other items from your website. Thanks!
