Hi, first, let me say I started watching your channel because of your unique collage artwork and then of course I kept watching all your renovation videos. I have been a licensed interior designer for many many years. I’ve done hotels and lately a lot of high-end residential from traditional to Uber Modern. Love how you think out your feelings for the space and go about it. Here are some tips from that might or might not help. 1. In planning a space I always start with a scaled floor plan. It really helps me think about everything and test things like how the existing pieces fit in the space. then I use architectural tissue paper to do different layouts quickly. I started with art school and changed to interior design, so I learned to draft the old fashion way, and also do perspective drawing. Get some graph paper, a scale ruler and some tissue and play with that. You’ll love it it’ll save you a lot of oops! * I also use architectural computer programs, but quick pencil floorplans are just as good and fast so you can make decisions. My clients tend to keep my sketches. 2. For the glass. That’s a great idea to cut it down but if it is tempered glass, you will not be able to. Usually for table tops, windows, and doors or anything that somebody could fall and hurt themselves on, the glass is tempered. It usually has a little decal somewhere in the corner. If it is tempered, you cannot cut it because it’ll break into 1000 little pieces. Just check out if it has that little emblem somewhere. It’s usually very tiny. Your glass professional will be able to tell you if it is or isn’t. 3. I like how you came to that process on the ceiling. I don’t know if you watch Christine Mconnel but she just came out with a video of redoing her bedroom. Take a look at it on RU-vid. She did that exact thing with the medallion in the center and it looks great. That could possibly give you more inspiration. She ended up tinting moulding to look like wood. 4. This may be too late but since you’re looking for that moody feeling, I like that you’re keeping the floors painted but you might consider taping the floors and doing some sort of pattern. Not a stencil that’s super fancy, but just something that creates a parquet effect very simple, with a little bit of a darker gray, maybe just two more darker tones. If not a great big thrifted rug will also work to set the vibe you’re looking for. Hope this helps! You are doing a great job and going in the right direction!! Also want to complement you on your look as you introduce videos. My husband and I also buy property and when I’m painting and renovating, I look like a hot mess, so I understand that you gotta be comfy when you’re working. But I like that you are looking sharp on the intros. 😊 Keep up the good work, and have lots of fun!

That old ladder is a good find. I made a library ladder for my loft with 11-foot high ceilings using an old ladder, cast iron pipes, casters and a beam trolley from Harbor Freight. Including the ladder, the whole thing cost me less than $100. I really love the industrial look of it all. I’m probably most proud of this DIY project.

I like the idea of painting your floor to match the exterior porch. Can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Im sure you’ll pull it all together, Andrew but those old 2x6’s that are aged and long have so much potential for something cool. Maybe like the vertical storage as in one of the inspo pics. Can’t wait to see what you and your parents create. Btw would your parents ever consent to a home tour video? I bet they have some cool stuff to share.

Old school graphic designer and artist here. I love everything you do and would love to see you find a flat file for your art/collage/paper storage. Also, traditionally, grey was the color for all creative studios because it didn’t compete or influence work. I know that grey had been used to death these past few years in interior design, so I’m hesitant to recommend it, but it would be nice to carry the porch floor color into the house. A picture rail with adjustable hanging chains, hung from the top of the newly raised ceiling would be a great way for you to display newly created or collected art, without the permanence of putting holes into the wall and the ability to create change without starting over on the design. Good luck and can’t wait to see what you and those amazing parents of yours do next!

Since it appears that was the living room, it would be great if it was a hangout spot with seating so as you work people can still engage and interact with u. Also, I used your idea of using high performance enamel spray to paint the tops some bedroom furniture....came out GREAT 👍🏾

Hi Andrew, I continue to be impressed with your creative mind, your ability to think outside the box, and admire the support provided to you by your parents! Personally I would paint the floor to match the porch floor. I think the two areas would kinda flow better this way and would be complementary. I also like the idea of reducing the size of the glass table. The moody color will look nice with your design choices. I also like how you are gaining ceiling height and your idea of adding a molding design. For me personally the ceiling light fixture is distracting. Maybe because it appears to hang low. Lastly, the Murphy bed is brilliant! I am looking forward to seeing the end result.

I think making the desk part fold down is still your best option - yes it will be smaller than the top of the piece below it - but most of the time it will be folded up to conceal the monitor - it will only be down when you are editing so i think it's still a better option than a sliding desk piece and a sliding monitor conceal piece.

Forget about what some conventional designers think. None of them can compare to your intuitive artist designing madness. Your wild and tenacious dreams are beyond what any standard design pro could imagine. The proof is in the pudding. Your results are splendid ❤ what a pleasure to watch and follow.

I forgot that you asked about design, I usually loosely follow Christopher Lowell's Seven Layers of Design. However, I always follow his paint advice. It is spot on.

Andrew, comments really help your algorithm. SOOO... Vertical storage: obliviously, shelves, and I don't think a mezzanine would work in only 10 feet. You have a ladder. No reason you couldn't store bolts of fabric on the rafters, etc. I is a shop daily, and very, very seldom used as a bedroom. Keep that in mind. You could put decking over the parts of the rafters for an attic type thing since you have that pitch. Suspended shelving on pulleys? Just thinking aloud. God forbid your murphy bed doesn't work, but you could put a mattress up there.

I say 'trust your gut', which almost always works for me. I like your grey studio floor idea connecting it with the porch. Like you, I'm also not an interior design 'pro', I've studied art, have good instincts and do well at decorating my own space. Idea boards are incredibly helpful. Love 🖤Queenies🖤 cameo appearances!

For the floor, the porch floor color. The molding on the ceiling sounds nice. What about a pressed tin ceiling. There is a laurel wreath one in mocha on Wayfair. For extra storage, you could bump out the china cabinet like a foot, build a wood frame with 2x2, attach it to the wall and china cabinet, then cover the ends with doors, you store large frames and canvases. People do this sometimes behind sofas and with headboards. For the fold out bed, could you build a window seat under the three windows and put in there, when not in use it could be additional seating. You could sale the sofa and use the funds on the room, probably not want you want to hear, I love it too.:-) 🛋️

Hi Andrew, here's another vote for having the floor the same color as on the porch. I think it will visually enlarge the space and also be more calming. As for the Murphy bed, lol, I'll pray for y'all 😄 But how comfy is it? If you'll have to put an air mattress on it like so many sofa beds to make it comfy for your guest, you could always just have them camp out on the air mattress itself (I know that doesn't sound like your aesthetic, but I'm thinking of practicalities. Or is there space for a little sleeping loft with that high ceiling??). Then you could design your computer space without having to worry about piecing in the foldout mattress. Just some things to think about. Love the atelier, window blind, and ceiling inspos, btw!

That two foot gap between the dropped ceiling and the original ceiling is valuable storage space. It seems like a slightly odd shaped room but may be you could have part dropped ceiling and a part of the ceiling that is the original height. You could then have access to an storage area that could be used for studio pieces that you need to keep but you don’t use all the time, like manikins, bolts of fabric, stuff that can be put in labeled boxes and taken down when required. I’m a fabric artist and I divide my studio storage into things I use all the time, things I use occasionally and things I rarely use but are needed for specific projects and need to be accessible. For you the things you use rarely could be stored in the ceiling space, the occasionally used items and the frequently used items should be stored in the lower part of your studio. My fabric stash is all in boxes stored by style and colour with my most used fabrics stored under my cutting table, the less used on my shelving in my closet. My least used items and specialised and bulky stuff is stored higher up in my closet so I have room to work. My studio is 6m x 6.5m (approx 19 ft by 20ft) and in it I have two large tables that are 1.2m x 2.4m (which when pushed together are almost 8 ft square, a great space to work on with bolts of fabric and two sewing machines!). It also has a 1.2m x 0.6m cutting table and a sofa bed although I haven’t extended the bed out as it would mean moving all the tables. If desperate the sofa is long enough to sleep on and I have as my old studio was air conditioned and during heat waves I would sleep in my studio. I don’t cope well in the heat! I hope I have given you some ideas and some practical advice and I’m looking forward to seeing how your studio turns out. Best wishes from Neil in Australia 🇦🇺

Can't wait for the Murphy bed since I have the exact same problem. I have been thinking of doing something with a trundle bed but that may not work out at all unless you're Murphy concept doesn't lol!

OK, going to comment in 'real time' here Andrew as I watch the video, As soon as you showed the room I was thinking I'd like to see the fireplace at least if not the rest of the trim stripped and back to natural, and then as you were talking I could see you started, :) Ceiling . . . I'd consider pulling the nails and leave the joists inplace, you said you are for now anyway, so live with it for a while and see. Also save a chunk of that wallpaper on the ceiling and frame it. A friend of mine saved bits of old wallpaper from their century farmhouse and framed little 6x6 sections of it and put them on a wall in the dining room, looked nice. Agreeing with your decision on keeping the painted floor (for now you can always change your mind later) if you dribble glue or paint or whatever on it, it's not a big deal. Personally not a fan of the walls and trim all being painted out the same colour but then I've mentioned that in a previous video. You know your preferences and what the light is like in your part of the world. I LOVE that that room has natural light coming from 2 sides, non polarized light is so nice for working and just hanging out in, and that blue couch looks like a nice place to hang out and just think or visit with Queenie. Is it a click clack that folds down to a bed? would be a solution to an extra sleeping space. And those sideways outlets in the baseboards . . . I've a couple of them in my house as well . . . As for your hidabed desk thingy . . . not sure I can explain my weird idea here, with just words and not waving my hands around . . . the space behind where the end of the mattress and frame thing go . . . use that space to drop the monitor down into. And since you just touched on lighting . . . I do love that weird funky homemade light, but . . . was thinking if it had shades or something on it so you could direct the light down like spot lights on what you are working on? Anyroad . . . sorry this got so wordy! Say hi to your folks from me, some random internet stranger . . . ;) and please remember, you know the space and what you want to do in it the best.

I am not a professional decororator by any means 😂 - I started out designing my studio the same way you did. I had to figure out function, with storage being the top priority. Really looking forward to watching more of this project!❤

As a graphic designer and artist warm ,ight is best to create from monitors stark white creates gray light it’s a bit of a myth that bright white is best for creative spaces in my experience Beautiful room and light! Cream on the floor it’ll bounce the light and it visually will flow IMO 🌷 I’d get a sofa bed with storage tho that couch is fab!

I would go with the Soft gray for the floors I Like the porch floors remember lite floors show all the dirt darker floors hide a lot ❤

I would go with cream on the floor. I painted all my floors a grey and then convinced myself l liked it, two weeks later, it was a tan cream color. I thought the grey gave my floor an outside porch feeling. The tan cream color made my rooms look bigger

Ceiling options: Of course my first thought with the age of your home was pressed tin. Pressed tin can be used overall or as a border feature or to create a highlight area. As for moldings and millwork, don't overlook flexible vinyl or urethane trim. These offer a lot of historical and traditional patterns to choose from. If you are concerned about those pesky little uneven surfaces that can occur when trying to mount drywall to the ceiling, the flexible moldings can form fit over those little bumps and ridges nicely. Most of these flexible borders come primed and some come with color. Some are even peel and stick, though I'd advise a second way of securing it thanks to our Southern humidity. They also come as a straight line and some are already shaped to save you the trouble of mitering into an rectangle, etc.

Raising the ceiling is a great idea. I feel like you need a drafting cabinet (if that's what it's called), then you can store a lot of bigger things that you may be working on. The cabinet with all the drawers I feel will be a great storage space. I do like the idea of shelving all the way up, with a ladder. All just my opinion, you and your Mom and Dad are doing a great job. And you do need a big table for doing all your creative things, nothing better then that! Thanks for sharing!❤

Love your creative process! There are a few things I’d love to see Definitely think you should carry the porch color in to the floor. The ceiling detail would be nice but maybe look into a tin ceiling tile with a simple square pattern, you can paint them or leave them the finish they come in but it’s a period feature that will give you the detail you are looking for and they are easy to install. You should definitely keep that glass top table. Paint the base black and make it a feature in the room because it’s a pretty cool piece. I think this is tempered glass which cannot be cut but, Yes, they do have people that can come out to cut the edge of the glass but most likely this one cannot be cut I’d love to see some floor plans at the start of your videos because it’s a much better way of planning and visualizing the space management. Definitely do a sofa pullout bed for the room so you can have a guest stay in there like you mentioned. If you send a floor plan I can definitely help you out for free. I’ve done mix use offices for clients, currently have 2 clients that are using their office spaces this way. Really loving your videos, it’s really nice to see someone’s creative process and I think it’s awesome you are taking on the house, it’s a lot to do but you are doing great! Keep up the videos but if you want any help, let me know lol

I judge you every video… but then you smile and I swoon. 😂❤ ps. If the glass is tempered which I believe it is, it can’t be cut. You’d have to have it annealed which removes the tempering so that it can be cut (requires a kiln). Might be to cost prohibitive to do. The table reminds me of vintage Lou Hodges or Milo Baughman tables. Especially the smoked glass color and oak with Hodges. Milo did a lot of cantilever tables. Because your table is cantilever; I’m pretty certain it is tempered. You could attempt to sand the glass (ventilator/vacuum catcher/goggles etc) and you could reduce the table up to a quarter of inch on each side. It would be a pain though and the stress could still shatter it. I’ve worked in interior design for over 20 years. I always find an item I love and then build around that with other things I love. I don’t ever intentionally buy filler. I also take an inventory of what my expectation and utility is of the room before I ever start designing. I then work on the vibe I want. So to summate: what I love that inspires purpose; what the utility/purpose is/and then how I want to feel. Those are really the questions I ask clients as well. I also take an inventory of the ‘design genetics’ I want or a client wants. For example: I love white marble, gray washed woods; gray linens, black Boucle fabrics; woven felt upholstery etc.; so those genes I kind of work with to have an aesthetic ecology. One of my favorite clients was an older female professional that wanted a 1950s pink black and white- that feeling she wanted was the best jumping off point.

I suspect the table glass is Toughened, which will probably mean that it can’t be cut.

The glass is probably tempered glass, kind of like what's in windshields. They are designed to shatter and difficult to cut. I've been told to sell/give it away and keep an eye on MarketPlace until you find the size and shape you want. (I found a couple of perfect pieces at a Restore and Thrift store. They sometimes just store lone pieces in the back).

Found your channel a couple of days ago and been binge watching every video since you bought the house. It's such a gorgeous house! I love, love that you renovate with so much thrifted and diy. So tired of watching people just rip out and put in new. And your parents! It's so cool how they are involved in all your projects! Don't they get tired of all your crazy ideas😂!? 100% match the floor to the porch! Love the idea of the Murphy bed/desk. The second you said "guest room", I was over here muttering "Murphy bed Andrew. Murphy bed." Love the idea of the ladder to access storage high up; if you made "boxes" alongside each other and painted some, left some wood, wallpapered some, that might bring in the creative element.

I enjoy your channel and your creativity, but when you said pull out couch bed for guests 😢 my back started to hurting, remembering sleeping on a sofa bed !!! 🛌 Fantastic idea if they were comfortable.

I think you're trying to jam in too many functions into one thing and each function will not end up working 100%. You can probably conceal the fold-out in a chest of drawers style cabinet which is deeper and still have a mounted bookcase/storage (though do you really want something that top heavy directly above someone sleeping etc). I'd keep the desk space separate as you'll want it to be as comfortable as possible not add on secondary functions. But the rest looks great :)

I have a pretty strong distaste for grey - it tends to feel clinical and cold, particularly in the wrong light. Granted, the light may be warmer and softer in Georgia than places I've lived, thereby making the effect different, but in my opinion a place you spend that much time in should trend toward the warm, even if it's subtle. I would definitely go for a different color for the floor than the walls/ceiling (and if I were you, I'd try something more pigmented like a soft sagey green or a teracotta. It would totally change the vibe away from atelier-chique, but that's two cents for you). The different color thing is mainly a reflection of my dislike for kitchen countertops that match kitchen floors (it makes it seem like the surface you prepare food on is the same as the surface you squelch mud into the house on); very samesy. Whatever you do is going to turn out great, I'm loving seeing the process!

WOW, you amaze me. You started out perfectly. You first lived in that house then decided exactly what it would be used for/what you needed it to do. Then cleared it all out. PROPS. All genius ideas, but the murphy bed idea almost made me fall of my chair. Little thing and my preference, is the floor should be darker that walls and ceiling, otherwise it feels disconcerting, at least to me. You could really darken the porch color a few shades and since they don't touch, it would look like the same color. You could break this down into 10 parts and that would not be enough. I love you and your channel. I support you and can't wait for the next vid. Sorry don't know about cutting that 1" glass. You may have to take it to a shop that cuts marble, and that edge would need to be buffed for sharp edges. They do all that. Depending on damage, bare in mind this is mostly a shop, what is wrong with a chip?

Have to thank you for reminding me of the Restore. I am in Chicago and a year ago I went to one. I just bought a new condo and will be updating the entire thing. I am determined not to buy anything new if possible. Haven't been able to buy much because I haven't closed yet. But I have been able to buy several lighting fixtures to replace the boob lights. I have also discovered that there are 11 Restores in the Chicagoland area so I am having a great time exploring. Unfortunately I don't have enough space to buy anything I don't a place for. Love your plan for your studio, it amazes me that you make a place for everything. If you are ever in Chicago I would love some help designing my multifunctional meditation room.

Love this room Lots of light The ceiling - just as a thought - why not leave the beams up that held the drop ceiling and work with them as an architectural feature In one of your inspo pics I’m sure there was one showing open beams. You could still incorporate your formal features Yes as much book storage as possible over the door etc Love the dining table and that it has a glass top and good idea to have the top cut down Those chunky legs are ideal to support a full length shelf underneath - but narrow enough so it doesn’t bang your legs when you sit down Murphy bed - I don’t think you should beat yourself up that on opening it would ‘hit’ sofa etc - just move them on the rare occasion you have guests there

Between you and your parents, it will all come together, I have no doubt. I do like the canvases and things waiting to be painted that you thrifted up high in some storage. Put some wheels on that ladder and hooks to slide on a rail and you can utilize up high storage. The ladder was a great find! Looking forward to your vision.

Wowza!!! That's a lot to expect on one room. Studio, Editing & Guest Bedroom. I like the grey floor idea myself. The only drawback to installing a library ladder is the valuable floor space required for its lateral movement. The Murphy bed idea is a good one. Hopefully you can rectify the mechanics to reduce floor space. (again) It's a shame the MC sofa is not a convertible. I despise sheetrock installation on the ceiling...get ready for a massage appointment. But, I simple love using vintage moulding, light medallions, etc.(ceiling) with modern touches. Eclecticism speaks to so many design ideas. IMHO😉 As in all things, solutions often present themselves during the process. The periodical Atomic Ranch and websites Houzz, Dezeen, & This is Paper might offer workable concepts to supplement your already imaginative ideas. Cheers Andrew & Family.

UgU, I too have wall paper on my ceilings, WHY. I don't know what I'm going to do. All of the wallpaper was painted over. Also, glass cutting is generally anywhere from $10 to $200 per sq foot depending on the complexity of the glass itself. Great video. I don't have any design ideas at all. Very inspiring energy you have ✨✨I am trying to come up with ideas for my (very smaller) windows and I am going to try instead of curtains to put two small brass knobs/hooks in each upper corner of the windows and have a loose curtain that I can put up when needed. I bought a Murphy bed a few years ago from Craigslist. It was a whole system w bookshelves and a desk. Made out of heavy wood. The catch was we had to remove it. 😅We found the original sell bill in the drawer from a well known woodworker in Long Beach...the OG price was 6k! It's. Unfortunately, your glass table probably cannot be cut down if the glass is tempered (which it most likely is, for safety).

Totally love the pull out bed -trophy shelf-desk creative idea…. Love the wood fireplace way more that the painted version…. Inspired me to re-think my creative space…. Question: do you find that having you work table in the center of the room better to work around? Or better pushed up against a wall?

Thh glass for my dining room table got chipped during installation. I didn't throw a hissy and agreed to trying a repair, which was way more interesting than a replacement. They used a file and sandpaper to smooth it out and its barely noticeable, you have to know it's there kind of thing. Saved them (and me) a big hassle and a scolding from the boss. Plus they're now friends and my pricing and lead time reflect that. Love the idea of matching the porch floor color and...well, everything you proposed. I enjoy your process and the evolution of your projects and the solutions your creative mind generates when problems arise, as they invariably do. This will be such fun to watch. I'm especially looking forward to the ceiling!

My mum did tiffany lamps in the past and from there/her I know that glass is cut by kind of scratching a line first and then break it along this line. So you could do it yourself. Maybe you can borrow the cutter (scratcher), however this thing is really called..

The glass table most likely is tempered glass which will break into tiny little fractiles if you attempt to cut it. Maybe play around with epoxy to fix and buff out scratches. Every designer/ crafter dreams of such a nice large surface to work on. Love all the progress!!

I generally like floor skimming crispy pleated curtains, but this rooms feels like the perfect space for un-ironed pools of fabric on the floor. Interested to see the roller blind idea, but in keeping with your art studio theme, maybe even use a drop cloth for the curtains-v cost effective!

I’ll come stay at your house next time I visit ATL. ;^) If you happen to come to Seattle, get in touch! However, nix the bottom cabinet idea. Just bolt the fold out bed to the wall with door hinges above the floor trim (maybe with a frame to fit) and then cover it with tweed panels so that it looks like a vintage sound system. Then place the trophy case with the secret computer desk above that. Also the fold out bed needs a memory foam topper and some pool noodles to cover the fold out hinge otherwise your guests are going wake up with back pain. The only thing I don’t like is that you should fix the fireplace tiles rather than replace them. The original has character. Did you ever mention if the fireplaces are functional? If not, you can put candles in them or insert electronic fireplaces inside it. Just some suggestions! *hugz*

When I saw the short file/storage cabinet, I saw it spray painted a great color and used under the desk…even getting rid of one end of the table base and using it to support the glass. It would make that table way more interesting. Just don’t know the height of the metal cabinet. You are one You Tuber that I look so forward to watching. Sipping my coffee…life is good.

I love where this is going! Keep it up. You may need to put your Murphy bed/book case on lockable casters so it can be slid away from the sofa if the bed is used. Also, I sooo needed to hear some love for painted wood floors. My whole place has black painted wood. I love it, but the dust is no joke and I was thinking of going to a light color like yours or stripping. I love the light paint you're doing. Looks great and way less work!

Have you thought about putting the bed on a platform and hoisting it up to the ceiling on pull-ups and you could lower it for guests. It would be like a hanging bed when needed. Just a thought. Keep the ceilings two by fours and paint them or whitewash them like in the picture. You can use them as a base for storage. You’ll figure something out I’m sure. It’s going to be a fabulous space to work in.

If the dining room table top is tempered glass, it can’t be cut. Tempered glass will shatter into hundreds of tiny pieces. It’s a safety thing so you’re not left with big, sharp shards of glass in case of an accident.

Hey, love all your ideas. Instead of the pull out bed, have you tried thinking about an elevated bed, like a loft along your bookshelves? I saw a video where they needed to create a room for a child in the family room. Anyway whatever you decide I'm sure will be awesome.

The Murphy bed/desk hybrid is genius. Your better than most interior designers I've seen. I think the gray floors will be beautiful in the space as well as your ceiling idea. As far as storage that utilizes the ceiling height, maybe build some book shelves that go all the way up and have a ladder to get the higher things (along the lines of the beauty and the beast library).

Years ago I decided I wanted glass on the tops of my ikea tables (wooden) because when you have kids they can really get all scratched up and I needed them to last. We took measurements of the tops and went to a local place that cuts glass for car windows etc. This kind of place can cut pieces to size you pop some tiny plastic spacers between the glass and wood. Search the net for a glass fabricator near you. It was worth it I still have the dining table & it’s like new

I like grey floors in an older house. I lived in a Victorian Queen Anne as a child with grey painted porch floors. It seems to have been the color usually used in those days.
