Let's Play B3313 1.0 - Part 1: Put Your Worst Foot Forward

I wasn't intending for the first video of this series to cover the bugs and crashes, since it doesn't give the greatest first impression, but for some reason that's just how it turned out. The good news is, I think these are all the major ones. Maybe there's some other areas that cause problems, but these are the ones I always hear about, at least. And I'm no closer to understanding why they sometimes crash and sometimes don't. (For the record, I did check if being in or out of Act 1 had any impact on anything, and it didn't seem to).
Here's the spreadsheet of all the Star IDs. It's been a couple weeks since the game released, so feel free to use it to patch in any holes in your collection. If you're looking for something to list how every area connects and how to reach all the new levels, I'm afraid I can't help you there.

I'm a new fan and someone freshly approaching the Mario 64 modding community. This is the first time I've actually sat down and played Mario 64 since I re-played it on the DS on the bus in school. I know you've mentioned your contributions were fairly minimal, but what you've helped create has given me actual days of joy in a hard time. A sincere thanks from me to you and the rest of the contributors. I don't want to give you too much trouble over it since it seemed you wanted the topic dropped, but in reference to what you were talking about at 5:00 I would be so excited to see more added and updated, but I don't think you all need to worry about doing it for any reason beyond it making you guys happy. What you've already made is something special and it stands on its own as is. That being said I'm sure there are quite a few people, myself included, who would support any future efforts to return to this project unambiguously. You guys rock, thanks for all you've done! EDIT Also, having watched a little more, I don't think you need to worry too much about finding your footing in terms of the purpose of this playthrough, and I think you're doing a great job with it! This feels like developer commentary! As someone who has completed the game it's really cool to come back and see the behind the scenes stuff that went into making this.

weird technical explanations, my kind of episode, time for a huge comment 10:25 That timer is a menace, no idea what's going on with it, I tried changing the id once and it just despawned mario in protest 12:10 oh my god I hope those notes had at least some helpful information, when I found out about the weird objects in each level that bump the IDs of everything (and only sometimes!!), my head almost exploded (it pretends bparam3 is 1 for every star in the room if one of their own bparams is set), I think it's the AI thing you mention at 27:30 Then there's that one object that just aggressively sets the star id of whatever spawns in (so you can't have two in the same room...) 20:40 mood, 445/450 are good numbers 29:01 selfishly, I'm glad this isn't red, this boss ruined one of my afternoons (grab the boss or his minion at the wrong time and you just die) 38:21 it was about the friends we made along the way, mario! 40:12 wtf? that's nuts, I wonder what's doing that 41:53 what isn't hilarious is what happens when you run towards the camera, messing up your joystick angles until you let go, drove me completely nuts 43:23 worst star for me is either the motos boss or the eye stealth star, both made me red in the face with anger (why is there a jumping section at the end of the stealth section?!) 47:30 I don't know what dying does in the system... I should really look into it more, it's fascinating. As a side note, you could possibly salvage a near-unwinnable save by making a macro that slightly wiggles the stick with small movements and leave it on overnight. It has to wiggle, though, and large movements will only make it worse. 49:00 FACTS, the fact that there's a heart in the arena just screams 'we know this is ridiculous, good luck' 53:30 I love weird stuff like this, I wonder what Daniel really is 54:11 this is calling something in custom code, it seems like it was meant to do something at some point, no clue what that might be though, didn't look into it very much 55:40 no this totally crashes in 0.9, it's just an angry little level with a bad temper, I don't know why it crashes either, you can just restart the game and come back and hope it won't crash that time around 1:06:30 wtf is this crash? I never ran into this. At least you can sneak around the edge. Maybe it's course id related, or whatever, since you didn't stay on the title screen?

My only assumption on the existence of Daniel the white pixel is maybe there's a very small face or duplicated vertices in that spot. Maybe the level editor doesn't show it since I know N64 emulators display polygon edges weirdly at times (like the faint white line visible in the destructible wall in WF). Still, it's so bizarre, but I love it. It's like B3313 knows how to troll both players and developers unintentionally. Also the crashes in the Mario DS-esque level and the Dire Bubble level are just so weird. It must be course id related, something with the game's internal flags that is causing it, or something like that. So odd.

Loving this LP so far, keep up the good work! While playing through the game myself, I discovered the Shadow Forest and SGI Indy courses in possibly the weirdest way unintentionally. Basically, I was messing around in the Pink Upstairs lobby, and I did a backwards long-jump up the stairs glitching through the door that would have taken you to Polygonal Chaos. Upon entering the door backwards, I found myself in Polygonal Chaos but on the other side of the double doors. Going back through the doors, it will take you to either Shadow Forest or SGI Indy depending on which of the two doors you take. Pretty interesting!

@@leonesquel6761Throws him into the floor for some reason, there’s no point in doing it and I think it’s a quirk with the engine. It’s also not tied to red stars, boser just eats floor when spun counterclockwise

YES! I was looking foward for this series to begin!! Without using a guide I managed to find 10 red stars and 250 stars... I don't think I will ever find the 3 red stars left without a video or a hint so I expect to find some interesting insights in this videos!

Honestly im scared to get more red stars because I don't want to have a high difficulty in my game, and also from what I saw in the wiki, the levels get bigger, which means more time going in a direction just to go to a door, I only have 4 red stars

The real Personalization AI is just this rom finding new spots to consistently crash, despite working fine during testing. Also Daniel.

I'm glad we ate getting 1.0 videos, since i wasn't sure you were done with B3313 or not. Somethings that i think that are worth mentioning: -About the whomps fortress single door, i could swear that, like the A and B versions of the lobbies, it was also related to going to the left or right door in one of the courtyards. The way you said made it seems it was random, but could have been a different version thing. -A funny thing about the Toad graveyard area: watching back on the 0.9 footage, you kinda went through the wall the first time, but totally disregarded that and went exploring the submerged maze lol -From Simpleflips stream, i remembered the balls in the bowser submarine being dark, but on this video they were red? Dunno if it was a change or the game messing with the player

The front doors in the castle grounds are set up with different "main" warps (left goes to Lobby A, right goes to Lobby E), but both have the same secondary warp that leads to the "lobby.z64" area with the WF painting. The secondary warp should activate about 1/5 of the time I believe, and this might be more likely after you've made more progress in the game. Not sure on the colors of bombs and stuff, I think that's one of those things that is just semi-randomized based on your stats.

54:11, looked into this one, I was wrong about it, it's just an object with a blank behavior that has an act mask set for some reason. Mario can get so close that it has to check collisions and crashes. You might be able to see it in the editor if you look up there, it should be hiding underneath the AI object. This appears to be the only one in the game like this. For posterity, easy fix is changing 0x14D7FF6 from 1F to 00 so it doesn't load.

I'm going to really appreciate this series! Love to hear your insight and insider info on it. Honestly, i don't mind the bugs so much. I'm glad the game is 'fixed' so its actually playable and you have an objective when you go in to grab some stars, knowing that you wont get randomly screwed over the whole time. But in the nature of the beta-ey stuff or whatever, having some bugs in some of the levels can get a bit of a free pass. Either way, looking forward to watching all of your stuff on it. I didn't watch the older stuff - by the time it was public, I caught news that there would be a final release, so I held out for this playthrough. Thanks for doing this all again! As for the project itself, I'm so glad it was finally done. I don't even care to play vanilla sm64 anymore, i associate playing sm64 with this romhack specifically. We all have our criticisms of it, but truthfully its such a big game that no matter what is changed it could never be 'perfect'. The sheer amount of stuff and places to go is enough to keep busy. If you try looking for all the spooky stuff it feels a bit pointless but if you just play the game as a mario game, you can be pleasantly surprised of what you come across.

I actually have *some* idea of why that no-reds pipe warp at 40:10 turns you invisible. This is a thing you can observe in the vanilla game if you just set a pipe or warp hole (stuff like the chimney warp or the bowser course entrance warps) to take you to a different non-pipe/hole warp on the same map (same area ID), and I've seen it in a romhack or two. My guess is that the game sets Mario to be invisible, and normally he's set back to being visible again when loading a different map, but because the loaded map hasn't changed, and the warp wasn't a pipe or hole, the game doesn't reset Mario's visible status, and thus he remains invisible. (I might've got some parts of this explanation wrong, it's been a very hot minute since I've messed around with SM64 modding.) Edit: also the star in Dire Bubble that's supposed to require the vanish cap can be bypassed by building up enough speed while swimming to clip through the grate. (that's what i did lol)

51:57 Ah, the wonders of rendering artifacts. I know just enough about rendering to know anomalies like this tend to be stubborn. Having seen the map in the editor, what I think is going on is you're seeing through the texture, to the white void beyond. Some weird misalignment or rounding error. You even see the white spot disappear for a split second sometimes (such as when the door closes behind Mario), which tells me you're not seeing something that's there, you're seeing something that isn't.

I think the crash in Dire Bubble might be related to the 1-up spawning. I got a similar crash in a different level when a 1-up was supposed to spawn. It's the one that kind of resembles a mini Bob-Omb Battlefield and it has a womp boss. On the opposite side of the level, close to a star, is this spike thing and jumping to its tip spawns a 1-up. First time it tried to spawn the 1-up it crashed. Second time it didn't. So I guess sometimes the 1-up fails to spawn correctly and crashes the game? Also wild guess but maybe the crash only happens when act 1 is active? I noticed you didn't activate act 1 when you tested the crash on your completed file.

So, after explaining everything about you testing Minion's Prison, maybe you can explain to me what happened to a level wasteofblood refers to as "Castle Depths", when I looked at that area in full detail, one particular section of it seems to have served as inspiration for Minion's Prison.

I found the Toad catacombs but only by accident. After "entering" that pipe, I tried to turn around but the clunky controls just didn't do that and I swam straight into the wall.

When you tried seeing if the crashes happened on your completed 445 Stars save file in both those levels at the end, in both instances you picked up an object that made that small "Jingle" like what you get in the different beta lobbys. Perhaps those objects are whats causing the crashes for everyone else?

The empty slots from Ex12 7 to Ex14 3 don't really do anything. I think there was going to be some added functionality at one point but it never got implemented. The stars that actually show up as green are basically just regular stars that don't do anything special. The only thing noteworthy about them is that they only spawn after you've collected 120 stars.

Honestly, since b3313 is basically done, you should just let the fandom take over at this point. Hey wait, perhaps you should do some sort of level design contest to add new areas to the game! That would be cool imo

53:10 Might be completely unrelated, but when you zoom in close in the editor, there seems to be a stray blue pixel right about where "Daniel" is in the emulator. Don't know enough as to whether or not this is the cause, nor why the blue would turn white in the emulator. Besides, the fact that its named at this point almost makes it feel like fixing it at this point would lose a bit of the charm. Even still, just wanted to point out the possibility just in case, because it may have gotten overlooked in the recording.

I think the crash on the Goomboss and Idyllic Islands/Dire Bubble might be cos of the 1-up. It looks like either a rendering problems or funny personalization shit.

Maybe the "difficulty scaling" has something to do with the crashes? It's very strange that they don't happen on your completed file. I encountered these crashes myself on a half-completed file in slot A as well.

Could the difficulty scaling have anything to do with the random crashes in those levels? By the way, this has been one of the most interesting hour-long videos I've watched in a while! The time really flew by. It was so cool to hear you talk about the inner workings of the game, as well as things you have no idea about. I don't know a whole lot about B3313, but I'm always fascinated by all the things I hear about it. So it was very enjoyable to learn all of these new things! Thank you for documenting your ramblings about this monster mod lol

dunno if anyone mentioned it before me but when you were looking at Daniel in the editor (53:00 ish) i noticed he was a very small BLUE pixel on the tile, instead of white. This may have been covered in a later video, now that i think about it, but who knows

Chris and his team (you included from what I understand) did put alot of effort on polishing stuffs while still adding areas and polishing them as well. Does anyone else have an issue with jumping out of water??? ive re-patched my copy 3 times and i still cant do it, i had to set a rewind key to my remote just in case i ever fall into a body of water

@@BikdipOnABus no I only started having the issue with the latest release which is odd, I've went back to previous versions recently and even the vanilla copy I use for patches and I can jump out fine. Not a game-ruined for me but quite odd that I can't find anything about it

I noticed that it's not a white pixel in the editor but it is still there, just blue, I assume its acting as a tiny hole you can see through like the texture in that spot specifically never got filled in when making it, idk how else to describe it having no experience with this stuff, just what I noticed

Could very well be. Some of the enemy-sprites from old Doom also have holes in them cause they were wrongly given a Cyan pixel, which was the engine's way of making a layer transparent. Kinda like a green-screen. That might be the texture-mapping's way of doing it, and it's just punching a hole to the blank white polygon beneath it.
