Man, there hasn't been a good Gavin/Ryan logic argument in a while. I miss those.

while watching this i kept expecting "he's still in the air" jokes but that hadn't happened yet as of the recording of this video, so it only existed in my mind.

Coming back to their GTA IV Let’s Plays reminds me of just how much fun this game was. Back before the GTA Online got so muddled up with griefers, OP vehicles, ridiculously over priced crap. Not to mention just how fun the game mechanics are, watching them fly around so much only to end up surviving so many of the falls/rag dolls reminds me of just how easy it is to die in GTA V

Gavin has always been horrible at explaining things, thus making himself look like an idiot. The way he worded his phrase made it seem like that each coin flip decreases the chances of getting heads, thus 12.5% on the last flip. What he really meant was the sequence has a 12.5% chance of happening. This is what Ryan was trying to tell him. Each coin flip has a 50% chance of being heads and a 50% chance of being tails, with the particular outcome Gavin mentions(3 heads) being a 12.5% chance. Michael barreled over Ryan while he was explaining this part which is why very few actually heard it.

There is a difference between the probability of flipping 3 heads in a row, and the probability of flipping heads on the final of 3 throws. The probability of the first is 1 in 8. The probability of the 2nd is still 1 in 2 as the probability of heads on any GIVEN toss is still 50/50

The first time I watched this I paused, found a quarter, flipped it three times, and got heads all three times.

To get 3 heads in a row is less probable then getting any other combination of heads or tails for 3 coins. 3 heads is 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/8 meaning the chance of getting any other combination is 7/8ths.

Gavin is right. You have 8 possible outcomes.

Here's how it works: The probability of landing heads in a coin flip is 1/2, heads again is 1/2, and heads again is 1/2. You take all of the fractions and multiply them together, like so: 1/2 X 1/2 X 1/2 = 1/8. This is the chance of getting all heads or any other combination. This is how lotteries are so unbelievable hard to win. There are 75 numbers and you pick the same 5 numbers that are the winning numbers. Take it from a guy who just took a class all about this, but for once, Gavin is completely and utterly correct.

Gavin's right. Statistically, a sequence of multiple chances is NOT identical to a single chance in that sequence. So your chances of getting three heads in a row is one in eight. That also means that in large series of coin flips (Say, 100 coins) it's more likely that you'll achieve a large string of heads than not.

so the whole coin thing...lets take all the possibilities of flipping three coins...TTT TTH THT THH HHH HHT HTH HTT...yes, HHH only appears once. now lets isolate the last flip...there are four heads, and four tails, thus explaining that there is still a 50/50 chance of getting heads on the third flip. there is no magical force saying the outcome of the flip is directly influenced by the other two flips.

Gavin is right about the probability of the coins. the probability for continuing events with the same likelihood of occurrences is the probability of that occurrence (.5) raised to the power of trials performed (3). (.5^3) is [(1/2)^3]=1/8=.125 and not the original .5

You are correct in saying that there is a 1 in 4 chance of getting 2 heads in a row, but that also means that you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting 2 tails in a row or 1 head then 1 tail. If the probability of getting a head is 1/2 and the probability of getting a tail is 1/2, then any combination you can think of is just as likely as any other with the same amount of flips.

Gavin's actually right about the coin thing. He's not saying the coin flips are influenced by previous flips. He's just saying that it's more unlikely to get three heads than any other general amount of flips (besides three tails). Three heads and three tails are equally rare. Two heads and one tails (not in that specific order) and two tails and one head each have numerous different paths that are possible out of those three coin flips, and are much easier to achieve.

Well, both Gavin and Ryan are correct. Gavin says that getting 3 heads is a lesser chance of another set of flips which is true because all patterns except 3 of each repeat each other, with HHH,HHT,HTT,HTH,TTT,TTH,THH,THT. So say 2 heads and a tail appears twice with each combination having the same probability. So 3 heads is rarer than 2 heads and a tail per say. However, each COMBINATION is as rare as the other because a combination should be in a specific order

Gavin the chance of flipping the coin is influenced by the previous times because you apply the same technic when you flipping a coin. If you got heads first time, just remember how you flipped a coin, and eventually you will get three heads in a row!

What Jack was trying to explain at the beginning was time dilation. He wasn't doing it right. Time dilation isn't about light, but about relativistic speeds and acceleration. Basically, progression through time is relative to a set of circumstances- the most important being velocity. As your speed approaches c, your progression through time relative to a relative fixed point changes. Both experience the same change in time, but it takes longer for the fixed point.

They're both right, depending on the question. Ryan is right because the past flips do not affect the new flips, and if u get those two flips the 3rd flip will still be a 50/50 shot. However gavin in right because The chance of getting ALL THREE to be heads at once is 1/8. So it really boils down to the question, if the question was "What are the chances of flipping heads 3 times in a row" than gavin is right. If the question is "If you flip heads twice, what i the chance of getting heads a 3rd time" then ryan is right.

All of the combinations of 3 are exactly the same because you have a 50% of flipping a heads or tails each time. So H/H/H IS as likely as T/H/H or T/H/T or any other combination

Gavin is actually right (surprisingly enough), while the coin flipping is an independent event, the likeliness of getting heads 3 times in a row is 1/2*1/2*1/2 which is 1/8, another way of looking at it being all the options in flipping a coin 3 times in a row: HHH, HHT, HTH, HTT, THH, THT, TTH, and TTT (T being tails, H being heads) there are 8 options, one of which is heads three times in a row, so 1/8. So, while the chance to get heads is always 1/2, to get it three times in a row is not.

The stats convo was awesome. BTW, both of you are partly correct. Each outcome is independent, but the probabilities for any series of flips is determined by the binomial distribution. Rock on Lads, Gents.

If you plan on flipping three coins, you have a 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/8 chance of getting all three heads. If you have already flipped two coins, and both came out heads, then you still have a 1/2 chance of getting heads on the next coin flip. The probability of the last flip is not dependent on the previous outcomes that have already occurred.

I have to say that these sorts of lets plays are probably the most entertaining to watch XD

If you flip a coin 3 times, the probability of it landing on the same side 3 times in a row is lower than it landing on both sides at least once, but that does not change the fact that each toss has the same probability of landing on either side as the other. So technically they are both correct, they are just arguing about different probabilities.

The way gavin is trying to say it is that you have a lower chance on that third flip to get heads, which is completely wrong.

Some friends and I used to do this back when it was released but at the airport instead. It seemed like we got the idea out there because I never found any games doing it until we had some people join our games then I started finding these types of matches everywhere for a long time like it just started spreading. Not necessarily saying we did start it, it just felt like we did back then.

I love the fact that Gavin is right about the coins and Ryan basically told him not to argue basic provability with him.

Let's explain this more, what Gavin was trying to do is known as a factorial, you know, these things - 5! (etc.), which are used in probability where the previous outcome influences the next outcome (IE you have 6 marbles, 1-6, you pick one, no matter what number you pick first, the next 5 marbles have a 1 in 5 vs. 1 in 6 chance). Gavin is right assuming that numbers cannot be replaced, however, the answer would end up being 50 P 7? (However many lottery numbers there are) where p = permutation

If you flip a coin, you have a one in two change of getting heads. If you flip the coin again, you have the same chance, because they are independent events. The fact that you flipped a coin before that does not influence the next flip. Believe what you want, but mathematically, the way to find probability is to multiply the odds of each event together. 1/2*1/2*1/2 is 1/8. Ergo, you have a 1/8 chance of getting 3 heads in a row when you flip a coin.
