This game has tight controls, difficult skill-based combat with a steep learning curve on a per-enemy basis, a leveling system with choices of where to distribute points, you lose unspent points on death if you get a game over, and as you progress you unlock shortcuts to start you out closer to the next part. It's the first Dark Souls. SUPER under-rated game. WAY better than the first Zelda.
Zelda was so influential that it seemed weird to people that its own sequel would reject its influence and go in a very different sidescroll direction. Funny thing is, that only makes Zelda 2 more interesting on revisit.
I played this a few times.... I can't remember if I rented it or another kid had it. I never owned it until now. I'll be playing on my channel at some point.
10:50 I’ve seen this in so many playthroughs. I don’t know why people don’t keep going right after picking up that key. If it’s not bricked off, it means you can keep going 😄
Agreed on the lives, and yeah it is certainly challenging. I enjoyed playing it but I think even Nintendo wasn't sure what kind of game they wanted to make.
The 3 lives is actually more forgiving than other Zelda games. At least in this, you get multiple attempts before being sent back to the start unlike all others it's 1 life and game over, but I guess the fairy in a bottle essentially replaced lives.
I remember renting this game as a kid and playing it for a week during one summer vacation. I got So. Far. and I was bouncing enemies off my sword like nobody's business. And then my NES reset and wiped my saved data. I was so discouraged that I never tried to play it again until I was an adult (and no longer have a week to spend on any game). I still love the game, and this was fun to watch.
Thanks for sharing that (heartbreaking) story! When I started this channel, one of my goals was to hear stories from people all around the world, sharing their memories of the games, or of the nonsense I talk about while playing, or whatever. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
The boomerang guys, the strat is to charge in at them and keep at them. Shield guys(Darknut) jump at them and attack, will usually hit them or push them back out of range to attack. This was the first Zelda game i played as a kid, and i replay it the most of all Zelda games. "If all else fails, use fire" really should be dialogue in a later town as you come across a few enemies late game, and the fire attack spell is they only way to kill them.
I totally forgot about Faxanadu! Wow. I remember not playing it much because I didn't know how to say it and if anyone asked what I was playing, saying "I don't know" is embarrassing haha
That’s absolutely crazy that the fourth lady you talk to in the town tells you to use the keys in the castles you find them. Do you wanna know why? When I played this is a kid is about 10 years old I think it was the last castle or the second to last Castle I couldn’t find the keys so I use the key from another castle and then guess what? The castle locks and you can’t get the key so the game is over and you have to restart from the very beginning !!!!!!!
Interesting. I don't remember it being glitchy, but I have seen individual carts have odd behavior. My friend had NBA Jam for Genesis and for whatever reason his copy had graphical glitches that made small parts of the court pixely and white. We used to say the fans were littering.
That's super unfortunate, but does sound like the most likely explanation. I say this as a non-expert on these things, but I definitely don't recall a lot of screen tearing from my childhood experience with the game. And honestly, like the title of the video says, it's a much better game than I remember - if you haven't played it since you were young, DEFINITELY check it out!
