The most surprising gift that I received was my first Magic: The Gathering deck. A Tempest deck. My father gave it to me on a Sunday morning, soon after my best friend tragically died. I did not appreciate the gesture back then. I was young. But it was the perfect gift. the perfect way for me to start socializing again, making friends and learning that we must keep moving forward, no matter what.

I was trading cards with someone at my LGS a year or so ago, and when we were done he pulled a Rashmi, Eternities Crafter out of the binder and handed it to me and said that since I was building a Rashmi deck I'd probably need one. That card wasn't a part of our trade, he just gave it to me and never asked for anything in return. It was such a small moment but it took me by surprise, we had only interacted once or twice prior to that day, we'd played maybe a game of commander and talked at the counter maybe once, but that's it. My Rashmi deck is one of my favorites, and I've had countless opportunities to get a foil/prerelease Rashmi, but that copy is special.

A week after my grandmother passed away I was sitting at home when a package arrived at my door. Upon opening it, I saw that it was a Nintendo switch. There was a letter inside the box with my grandmother's writing, it said "Honey, I know that you'll be sad when I'm gone but I want you to be able to smile and stay happy. Our last conversation you had brought up that you had been saving up for this and I want you to put that money towards your moving fund. -Love Ma" It truly broke my heart and it took a while before I could even take it out of the box. Every time I pick it up to this day I think of her and think of how she would have loved to play.

The most surprising "gift" I have ever received was in one of the lowest times of my life. I was really hit by depression and went to the supermarket to buy the limited amount of things I could afford with what money I could - as I was not able to work at the time. As I got to the counter I was zapped through in rapid time and noticed the staff at the supermarket smiling at me knowingly. Feeling a little bewildered as I probably looked pretty awful I didn't notice them packing my items next to some other bags. When I went to pay, they shook their head and said that a store manager had seen me walking around and bought the bags already packed and would buy what I bought to the counter for me. I was utterly floored how a complete stranger could see just how bad things were and the sheer act of kindness - I think it was the first step out of that spiral. Sometimes humanity can be wonderful.

As much as I wish I had an amazing and heartfelt story like the others I’ve read, I only have this. For my 18th birthday, my mom asked me a few months prior what I wanted. Jokingly, I said, “Get me a shirt with my face on it.” Well my birthday came, and my first birthday gift as an adult of the world was a tshirt entirely filled out with a picture of my face, and to this day I have no regrets.

About 3 years ago, my wife casually asked me what my favorite basic land art was. Me not being too bright, told her the Swamp from Unglued by Mark Zig. It was full art, beautiful, and just unique to me at the time. Working at Lowes I’ve met a lot of wonderful people, but one customer in particular really made my day. I had a call out in the garden center and was all alone unloading pallets in mulch into peoples trucks and trailers for hours. We’re not allowed to accept tips so a customer asked me what my favorite food was. I told him pizza just as something quick and then easy so we could get the line moving so I might possibly be able to get away for a minute. 45 minutes later the guy pulls back up with a whole pie and just gives it to me no questions asked thanked me for the work I was doing and drove off. It’s her home town and I loved her. After six months of long and rough new life and living completely alone for the first time my wife(then girlfriend) surprised me on July 4th. She took me to another home without saying anything and there we picked up my (second) best friend. I was admittedly extremely emotional. Mia made the next few months living alone before my marriage so much easier. And now she lazes around our home being lazy and fat. She’s still beautiful. I also decided this last Christmas was the best time for my wife to be treated surprised. I got her a young and beautiful kitten. Who now bites us but insists on sitting in our laps. He found the Snapcaster Mage which would give my deck the push it needed, but I didn't have the money to spend (each of those cards is $40!) He really wanted me to keep playing and wanted me to keep enjoying the game, so he bought them for me. And yes, they have helped me win >:)

The most surprising gift I've ever gotten was from my fiance. She gave me a Pokemon N64 last year! And it was the Japanese version! I recently got her into MTG and she's actually the one who told me to post this comment haha She really wants that booster box ;) Edit: Also just want to say thanks for all the videos! My household watches them pretty frequently.

Having my post featured in your video is one of the best gifts I've gotten! In all seriousness this year I got a great gift for my birthday. The world had just shut down everything due to Covid and my birthday ticked over, not many people remembered it because (understandably enough) everyone had a lot on their plates. My girlfriend wouldn't let that stand and we just went out for a walk. Spent the whole day together and bought some take out food as a gift. It meant a lot to me and it helped me through a rough time. It's the best gift I've ever gotten.

When I was a preteen, my grandparents bought me an incredibly long, deluxe volume of an obscure manga. Over the years, I had come to expect gifts from them to be a reflection of there desires for me. Things they wanted for me. This really changed things, they had finally listened, and now finally understood me and my interests. This meant a lot to me and my relationship with my grandparents.

For me the best "Gift" I've been given was a tiny little squeak ball of a Kitten. Happened to ask a friend to pick me up a few things on their way home, and when they arrived, was presented with an orange tabby the size of my palm. 6 years later and still the most precious thing to me.

My most surprising gift goes way back. My brother was in the navy during 9/11 and I didn't see him for over a year following the attacks, but he knew I always wanted to play bass and especially loved acoustic bass guitars. So lo and behold, one day I'm home, a broke college student with nothing really to do, and I get this massive box in the mail with no return address. It's a beautiful brand new Ibanez acoustic bass (in a hardshell case) which I still play almost every day, almost 20 years later. (I'm sitting about 15 feet away from it as I type this.) I think it was surprising not only bc I hadn't heard from him, but you remember how weird and dark of a time immediately after 9/11 was, and to just have this unexpected bolt of hope shoot through me really made a lot of things a lot better.

Well I guess the coolest Gift was a Fallen Angel from Legends from my best friend since I collect this Card and got it in every other version except this. On an other location a good friend of mine gifted me a stonefroge mystic since it was the only card I needed left for my legacy death and taxes. But mostly I do gifts to other, we even one time gathered money to get a friend to the GP (or MagicFest or what ever) in Bollogna :) that was cool.

I'm starting to get annoyed at how WotC has cards printed and packaged. In my box, the packs were packed in reverse of here - token, land, and rare at the front. Made it easier to go through. On top of that, it seems that anything that isn't a booster box gets printed in Japan, so the cards have a different texture and better feeling/looking foils. There's just no quality control anymore.
@Nick-co9pf
@Nick-co9pf 4 года назад
I completely agree. One local store i bought two boxes from had the japanese print style packs, with the "loose"-er style packaging around the cards ( i prefer it actually ) that have the rip notch to open them along the side. and then I picked up another box from a smaller shop i like to support in the area, and those were the overly "tight" packages that you bascially have to tug until they rip open suddenly. the style i'm actually used to seeing in the U.S. And the feeling of the cards themselves, I much prefer the ones that come from the japanese print style. I'm very glad the box i opened with two ugin and a foil alt grim tutor came from that print run.

tl;dr because I wrote more than I thought: When I was a sophomore, my dad had been deployed in Afghanistan for just under two years. My mom wanted to surprise my sister since my dad wasn't able to go to her high school graduation. The dean of the college was on board with it. He 'interrupted' my sisters class and said that they needed to talk. My dad walked in shortly after and my sister broke down in tears. The dean gave my sister some time off of school so that we could spend time as a family again. The time we spent together combined with surprising my sister is probably the greatest thing I will ever receive. This happened in the fall of 2016, just after college classes began meeting again. I was only a sophomore in high school, living alone with my mom. The unit my father was assigned to had deployed to Afghanistan just under two years prior. You might assume that him returning home after the one and a half years without him is the gift I received, but that is only partially correct. While I love my dad, and his homecoming caused me to cry more than I ever have, and probably ever will again, what causes me to well up without fail is the time my mom, my dad, my sister, and I spent together afterward, and the events that occurred beforehand. That fall was my sisters first semester of university, and while starting college isn't significant, two birthdays, one Christmas, a Father's Day, and her high school graduation without dad was. Especially after we, my father included, were all lead to believe that he would be able to attend her graduation. In an effort to try and make it up to her, my mom and the dean of the college devised a plan to best deceive my sister. My mom doesn't call it lying though because hiding information and intentionally trying to change it are two different things. I mean, technically correct is the best kind. The dean made sure to let the teacher and the other students know what was going on, too. After my dad landed and was allowed to leave, we headed to the university. We met with the dean outside the classroom and he barged in during lecture 'uninvited' and politely informed my sister there was something he needed to discuss with her, immediately. As she cautiously left her seat and made her way to the door, my dad, still in uniform from the long journey home, entered into the class. She immediately broke down into tears and mostly incoherent babbling as she and my dad hugged for the first time in forever. After the hugging was done and the tears mostly finished, my sister, still incredibly confused and in shock from everything that had just transpired, came home with us to spend the next few days together as a once again whole family. Even now as I'm recalling the details, I regularly have to keep tears at bay. I will always cherish those few days together after a few years apart

Definitely the most surprising gift I've ever gotten was given to me about 6 months ago by my father. I had just come home in winter break during my freshman year of college and no one told me he got a new car! The best part was, he decided to do me a huge favor by not selling his old car and handed it down to me instead of getting roughly 8k for it. I was so happy because at the time I was driving a 2001 Subaru that couldn't even play music that i bought in highschool. So that is hands down the best gift I've gotten

I think the most surprising gift I got was back in college. I was pretty poor & came from a poor family. In college, I didn't have a lot of extra money. Fallout 3 had JUST been released. I had watched videos up to that point about it, trailers, people talking about it, etc... I could NOT afford that game. My boyfriend at the time ( who came from a more upper-middleclass family ) watched me & saw how excited I was for the game. I knew I should start saving for it. I made a resolution to sock away a few dollars every week if I could. One day I had to stay late to complete projects at college then headed straight to work. I worked the late shift ( almost always, save weekends when I opened the place ) at a restaurant nearby. I arrived home tired as could be, took a shower, and then headed to my desk to watch some videos before probably heading off to bed. To my surprise---There sat Fallout 3 in an unopened box on my keyboard! He had placed it there ( with a receipt just in case it didn't work on my PC ) and a loving card. I was so happy! I ran back to the bedroom and leapt into bed and hugged him before finally falling asleep knowing that tomorrow I'd be scavenging the wastes! ( and probably trying to cook a nice meal or two for my boyfriend! ) Sorry for the long winded post! I just really still think about how surprising it was to receive that gift out of nowhere. :)

I received the most surprising gift for Valentine’s Day back in 2nd grade from my mom. I was very into collecting Yu-Gi-Oh cards and my mother was the one paying for this very expensive hobby 😅 so she kept tab on what cards that I had. She knew I was looking to finish my Exodia the forbidden one set and to my surprise when she came to pick me up from school she had the missing piece for me. She’s no longer with us but this memory will always stick with me as one of my happiest! Also on a side note I just wanted to thank you for your content, I’ve just recently started playing mtg arena and am hoping to pick up some cards once my local shops start back up with casual and tournament play. I really enjoy your videos, I’ve definitely gotten a stronger grip on the game because of them!

The most surprising gift I ever got was a bass amp from my dad. My dad is a religious person and when I started listening to "the punk rock" I assumed he was not going to be happy with me. I saved up my money to buy my very first bass guitar but had nothing to play it through. Christmas was right around the bend. The last gift he gave me was an amp and a cable. I was in shock but he said music/the arts are important and he wanted me to have the tools to do my best!
