Swap your old hard drive out for a bigger solid state drive (SSD) on your PS4! This video shows you all the steps necessary to install a new hard drive on your PS4 system! The steps are the same for using a bigger storage size hard drive drive!
Benefits of an SSD include faster load times for digital games, faster multi-tasking within games (accessing messages etc.), and longer lifespan than a traditional HDD!

For whatever reason if the new drive doesn’t work, can I just pop back in my old original drive and it’ll still work? Or will it ask to format it?

Like Bardownski mentioned, it'll still work. The only time you may run into an issue is if you update the system firmware on the new drive and then try to pop back in the old drive.

You can format a large usb drive to exFat32 so you can backup all your files over 4gig size using the ps4, in the settings/devices section press option button over your usb drive and select format to exFat32. Then you can backup everything.

Well you could see a significant difference of speed if you would have a ps4 pro which comes with Sata 3 unfortunately the ps4 and the ps4 slim are Sata 2

Yeah probably much more noticeable on PS4 pro. The difference I saw with the PS4 slim was already significant, so I could imagine on the pro.

I swapped the 1TB hard drive to a 2TB SSD on my PS4 Pro. I messed up the first time because I downloaded the install file instead of the reinstall file. Turns out you don't necessarily need a FAT32 formatted flash drive because even exFAT will work. On a PS3 it has to be FAT32.

Nice video. I put a 4tb seagate in my uncharted ps4 a few years ago. Trimmed the top cage from the hard drive bay since the hdd was a little thicker, but no problems to this day. And only delete games I am absolutely done with. May go with the ssd for my secondary ps4.

It is not advisable to pay so much for SSD. A 8TB ssd even cost more than a new PS4. I rather buy another new unit with that kind of money. Well just have to bear with that slightly delay loading time.

A 1 Terrabyte ssd is enuff to store the games you play often. If ssd gets full you can move the game (in menu hdd setting) you don't play mush to a standard hdd on a external usb disk 2, or 4 Terrabyte is fine. They are way cheaper. Later you can move easy back games to fast ssd when you plan to play them a lot. BTW you can move all your games to external usb hard disk drive, as backup, so you don't have to redownload them from psn.

from what I've been hear I wouldn't recommend using rest mode at above 2TB as that can wipe data when you turn the system back on from sleep mode. Love the video. thank you.

I never use rest mode because of a bad experience in the past haha ... It always gives me "ps4 was not shut down properly" error

At that price i would have just bought an exteranl..just got my os4 slim..i dont know if i can just add a 4 tb 3.5 inch drive as an exteranl..it alos 4 tbs just not as fast..do you think this would be a good option..

u can use 3.5 hdd with sata cable in external but u also need to have 12 volts pins , ps4 don't give 12 volts for 3.5 p drive , 2.5 hdd don't need 12 volts , just 5 volts only

Couldnt you use the old ps4 hard drive with the case and cable combo, to restore everything back to the new hard drive. After you restore the firmware off a separate flash drive.

I'm wanting to know, is it possible to turn off the PS4 remove the original HD, and clone to the larger new SSD HD? I'm looking to upgrade my 1TB PS4 hard drive to a 2TB SSD Samsung HD? I've been using a Seagate external SSD HD and it's been a total pain in the ass, in the middle of playing games, it pops up a screen saying something went wrong search for the HD! It's not moving or wiggling it's just having a issue! Send report, BS, BS, BS everybody seen this before...

So the firmware can't be added on the folder that you did on update file and add those 2 files or it has to be on a usb drive

From what I’ve read the Samsung 870 is pretty reliable. In my personal experience so far it’s been great, boots up fast, loads games fast, and home menu activities are fast in game. When I go back to my PS4 with a HDD I’m just like how did I used to live like this lol. Capacity is great too, so far I’ve used about 2.5 TB and have a little less than 1.5 left. The common brands I see are either Samsung or sandisk and they both have performance and budget versions of SSDs. You get what you pay for really and the Samsung one wasn’t cheap lol In terms of lifetime I still have yet to see which one would last longer.

SSD's are quite reliable. The only time you will run into some issues is when they nearly their storage limit. (Thou the same thing can happen with HDDs) So really SSD's are better in every possible way. Other than Files/Images will last longer on a HDD. Since SSD "Data Blocks" slowly degrades overtime.

I had a question. Do you lose your photos from the Capture Gallery? Right now on my stock HDD all my captures are stored in it’s own Game Specific folder. I wanted to know if I backed up the images before changing to a new drive, will the captures return to their Game Specific folder in the Capture Gallery? you can have them on the same flash drive. I just separated them here to make it more clear which steps we are doing and why were doing them in case some people wanted to skip the backup or not. You can have other stuff on the usb with the system software, personally I choose to have it empty as a sanity check haha

hi Khan I tried sharing an external USB storage between a ps4 on 9.00 & a PS4 on latest firmware and of course the fake .pkg games cannot be launched on the ps4 on latest firmware. But the ps4 on latest firmware can install games on disc into the shared external storage, but it gives an error when trying to download legit digital purchased games if you choose the external storage as target installation. why is that so? is it safe to play games on disc online using the shared storage with .pkg installed? The ssd was brand new and so I didn’t have to do any formatting besides what the ps4 did. If your ps4 is having trouble reading it, try formatting to ntfs.

Significantly. Startup from cold boot is faster. Game load times have generally been 2x faster. Multitasking during games is quick and seamless.

you can format and use it but it won’t be new or perform like new. Any issues or slowdowns it had as a ps4 hdd will probably be noticeable as a laptop hdd.

you can only use the firmware version that your system is on or above but not below

You can "Try" to install a lower Firmware patchnote. However, it will involve several more steps and downloading a APK for the Version you want. Not to mention you might have to use a 3rd part App to get it up & running. (Plus this can get you banned if you play online-- since Sony's servers might think you're playing on a Jailbreaked PS4)

You’ll want to keep trying and reformatting them as well as ensuring they are placed in all the way before starting up the system (or in general). They can be finicky lol Also I saw your previous comment in my notifications but when I click on it, it disappears. But to answer that, I believe it has to be fat32. Certain sizes cannot be formatted to fat32 but to bypass that you can use a nonnative formatter. Something as generic as searching “fat32 formatter” and vetting a few of them.

It's not needed to format, the reinstalation on playstation website formats the ssd in fat32 already.

The formatting done in this video was for the usb flash drives which need to be formatted to fat32 in order to be readable to the PS4. If they are already fat32 you don't have to format of course (doesn't hurt to though). As for the SSD/HDD, that doesn't necessarily need to be formatted because the PlayStation formats it during this process. However, sometimes that drive is not recognizable by the PlayStation it which case it helps to format the SSD/HDD as NTFS.

I have a question! If I want to make that upgrade and let say that I don’t back up any of my stuff on a usb before I reset my ps4. After I put the SSD back in and redownload my games on PSN, will I lose all of my progress on my games or it will be saved? Thanks!!

You won’t have any of the saved progress anymore. However, if you have ps plus, you have the ability to save game progress to the cloud in which case you can get your progress back when you sign in to your account.

The one thing you didn't show was which firmware file you chose to download from the PS4 website. We seen you click download file, but not any particular version. From my understanding the firmware you reinstall has to match what was last on the console.

anything from your systems firmware version to the current available version will work. The website usually has the most recent version on there so it is a safe bet.

There is no need to format the SSD because the PlayStation 4 will do that. I believe NTFS is what you want though.

800GB is the limit on my PS4 I brought some digital games if I replace 800GB with 2TB-4TB would I still have my games but would need to redownload or buy them again?

If you bought them digitally then you would just need to redownload them after replacing hard drive.

Thank you, very much. I bought a PS4 Pro about 5 months ago. It's very nice. Much improvement over PS3. I cloned the HDD to the SSD, a SAMSUNG 870 QVO SATA III SSD 2TB 2.5" Internal SSD into the PS4 Pro and it loaded up very nicely and works great. $129 - Amazon But the only problem I have is memory is showing 829 GB. I've come across your page after not finding what I need. You've done a Superb & Easy job of explaining everything when others have not. I'm currently downloading Installation files on USB. I'm downloading a few games so It will take another day before I complete reinstallation of SATA III SSD. @@Kerwination oh sorry! I misread, I’m not sure if the EVO is the correct form factor to connect to the ps4. It needs to be sata connection.

This is a good video, step-by-step description was great. Is it more snappy with that SSD? I read a forum that PS4 wasn't made for SSD but will work fine and they said that it won't be any faster. I was wondering if that was true.

In my experience, the load times for the games and the system from a cold boot were much faster. The PS home access while in game was also faster as well as the speed in which the ps4 can store recorded clips. I have 2 ps4s and have compared them side by side and verified. This question comes up so often on this video, I may consider doing a side by side haha

Hey why won't my download when I hit PS4 console reinstallation file? Like do I need a special flash drive? It's like nothing puts up when I click on it.

The official playstation site has been odd lately and files for both the PS3 and PS4 updates have not been downloading (no idea why). You may have to try other sites that archive OS files such as archive . org etc...
