This webinar that took place on December 27th 2020 as part of our new series of webinars, called "Let's read & Talk about Gemology". For that fourth session, I invited John I. Koivula to be our guest.
As you may know 20 years ago in November 2000 I started my gemology studies in Yangon (Myanmar). I went there with 4 great books that truly helped me a lot to start my gemological studies. Time has passed and the authors of 3 of these wonderful books that inspired me so much have become friends. I wanted to take that opportunity to invite them to talk about these great books they wrote and the stories behind them. After Antoinette Matlins in November, our guest on that session was my former colleague at GIA John I. Koivula, the co-author (with E. Gubelin) of the three wonderful “Photoatlas of Inclusions in Gemstones” that inspired me and many other gemologists to discover and document the internal beauty of gemstones.
John I. Koivula joined GIA in 1976 after working as an exploration field geologist. He spent more than 50 years studying and photographing the microworld of gemstones. Besides the famous “Photoatlas” he is the author of many other publications. He received many awards during his carreer from the GIA, the AGS, the AGA, the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies and in 2019 the IMA named a new member of the beryl family: Mineral “johnkoivulaite” after him.
