One of the greatest SAXOPHONIST of all time his legacy will live and be played for ever. You can feel his heart and soul in his music. Rest In Peace Mr. David Sanborn. Blessing to your family.
David Sanborn was my step into Jazz in the 80's. I'll never forget his special unique sound and phrasing. Glad hearing him twice live in concert in Vienna 😊🎶
David Sanborn left behind a stellar and very impressive legacy, for sure. Thanks for assembling this tribute for us! Split harmonics sounds like a great subject for a video.
I was crushed when I heard the news of his passing. My uncle called me and told and although he was 78 yrs old I wanted more from this incredible saxophonist who got me interested into the world of smooth jazz. I was blessed to have met him and just so honored to have seen him play live, and to hear him warm up was a treat for me as well . Thank you Mr.Sanborn.
Lotus Blossum Sunrise Gospel (starts slow but god does it build near the end) Kalimba (trading choruses with Bob Berg on from his Short Stories album. Heba
It's no surprise he worked well with Mike Brecker (who held him in high esteem). Like Brecker, Sanborn was one of those guys who could play in any context- fusion, 'smooth' jazz, straight ahead jazz, funk, rhythm & blues, pop, rock, even avant garde- and fit right in, yet still sound completely like themselves. There's a valuable lesson there.
What’s crazy is just this year I used one of your tutorials on the “How Sweet it is to be Loved by You” saxophone solo by Sanborn to play for my school, what a legendary guy. He played it so effortlessly!
Had the joy of seeing him many times since the mid-eighties. That special "wail" he could spin is one of the few musical sounds in my entire life that hits me square in my heart. Thank you for this tribute.
Thank you Jamie for this tribute to one of the greatest, and an inspiration to so many sax players. Even near the end of his life he was making wonderful music: his solo on Kandace Spring's version of I Put a Spell on You is just magical.
Sanborn had a profound influence on me, as he was the sax player I’ve studied the most over the years. His sound is what gets the most attention but his expressiveness is really what set him apart from other sax players. Truly a unique artist.
I agree, great tribute. But let me guess what you consider D.Sanborn's best solo with Carly Simon (cause I'm a great fan of both): You belong to me? Just like you do? We're so close? Blue of blue? I got it bad? Hello big man? My favourite is "Blue of blue" taken from the album "Torch" (1981). Greetings from Portugal.
My favorite David Sanborn track is Every Tear from Every Eye on Johnny McLaughlin’s Electric Guitarist album. Check it out if you haven’t heard it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--glY4qBQ4-k.htmlsi=U67hOd4KnMyYU35W
Brillant video Jamie. I first became aware of DS listening to Jools Holland, Rockinghorse album. On Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, the song builds tension until exploding with the perfect alto sax solo by DS. Every time I hear it, it makes me appreciate the saxophone and what an amazing instrument it is.
Check out a tune called "King Of The Lobby" from the Return of the Brecker Brothers CD if you want to hear Sanborn soloing along with Michael....they trade off at the end....
When I was 14, I got Straight to the Heart on vinyl and wore it out. Needless to say, no matter how hard i tried, I never sounded like Sanborn. But that journey turned me into the player I am now. Put the Dukoff back on the sax today, to remember Sanborn, and you know what? Its a great mouthpiece
Great tribute, Jamie! I’ve seen some other posts where people have focused on their favorites, but yours really matches a lot of what spoke to me over the years. Great comments from other subscribers also - you’ve obviously built a nice space for a community of saxophonists. ❤
I knew Dave a little bit and was really devastated when I learned of his passing. He is one of my all-time sax heroes and inspirations. I did a tribute video, in case anybody's interested.
One of his hardest ballads ever created to me in the past 30 years is off of his album "Songs From The Night Before" titled "Missing You". That ish go so hard. I feel in love with his sound when I was in beginning band in 7th Grade. My mom purchased me my first jazz album which was that album. Sanborn will always have a special place in my heart. Rip to one of the GOATS.
Nicely done Jamie! One of THE ultimate Alto sounds - right up there with Carter, Hodges, Parker and Cannonball! I was little sad that you didn’t include a cut from my favorite Sanborn album - ‘Up Front’. Marcus Miller brought David back to his roots and gave us all an epically funky good time!
Sanborn was one of my earliest favorites. I bought a cd of his album heart to heart, I think recorded in 78. “Solo” is one of my favorite tunes on that album. Outside his pop solos some of his albums are really great. Thanks for putting this tribute together.
