I've never really used raw oils and butters but have transitioned completely away but I do agree we can all exist together. Everyone needs to do what works for them.
I am a licensed hair stylist for over 30 years. When I went natural over 15 years ago, I always went to RU-vid to learn about natural hair. Lol They did not teach us in beauty schools back in the late 80’s about natural hair. So we all relaxed our hair. Well decades later, the RU-vid naturals taught me more about natural hair more than beauty school.
That no oils or butters started with stylists wanting to make a new trend. In fact, they made money from it. People brought the products on their approved list. That trend doesn't work with my hair. In fact, I also went back to hair grease, too. My hair is responding well. No more trend following for me.
I don't believe anybody about my hair that doesn't have my hair texture (all type 4 but mostly 4c throughout). My scalp doesn't really produce any oils. Never has. Dry hair equals breakage for me every time. I've been natural my whole life. I can go 3, maybe 4 days without oiling my scalp specifically. It literally looks ashy and gets itchy if I don't oil it 😭 Always use simple hair grease or a reliable oil and water to seal in moisture when I braid it.
No oils and butters is driven by hair stylists who want to now be the authority of natural hair after we’ve already figured it out on our own. I really feel that being natural is about taking charge of the health of your own hair. Some people are just not adept at doing that. One reason I think is bc they are more focused on style instead of health. These are the people who need to listen to stylists
To make it worse, the stylists behind it were so demeaning and condescending to those new/confused naturals who were just trying to follow their rules, poor things. When the followers still had dry hair, they blamed them and said they weren't doing something right but keep doing it for several months to see results. Uhmmm no maam, it doesn't take that long to get moisturized hair!
The no oil no butter method is basically slapping "botanical" gel on very wet hair and go under the dryer. But the results if you have long very dense type 4b or c hair is that you will basically end up with an afro, which can be a style choice, but isn't very convenient past a certain length. I don't wear an afro on a daily so, doing wash and gos isn't for me. I don't like the feeling of gels particularly UFD gel because it's sticky, attracts lint and SSK.
Let's just use what works for us. Tired of these trends trying to influence what we do. I like oils and butters on my hair. Keeps it happy. I just wash often enough not to have a ton of buildup and keep my scalp clean and healthy. If someone else does not use oils and butters that's fine with me. 💖
I’m on the no oil and butters train. I’m happy, my hair is way easier to manage. That being said, it’s your hair do what works. Heavy oils and butter make my hair hard to detangle. I’m a wash and go girl. I definitely think the no oils and butters message is for us who want to style their hair in wash and goes. Do your hair how you want.
@ MsHoneyFly11 thank for the statement of this month: "No oils and butters is driven by hair stylists who want to now be the authority of natural hair after we’ve already figured it out on our own". We will not allow them to take away our oils and butters....
I did the 30 day detox and truly believe in it, did my research, and got guidance from specialists. It’s more than just not using oils/butters. My wash days now being just one hour with 4-type hair was enough to convince me to try it out😂 Everyone do what you want, and I agree no need to argue with each other. Just love ourselves and the beautiful hair God gave us. I’ve really learned to embrace my natural hair and never talk bad about it
I know I commented on this before. I don't do as many butters because of how my hair handles them. I am surely low porosity and don't need the weight. I do mix my own pomade and it emulsifies. I use oils and I added herbs. Education is the key here. Educate yourself about your hair and the products that you use. Those products are meant to be washed out the hair once the purpose is served. Clarifying shampoo is made to get that stuff out your hair. It's not made to use daily or if you haven't put heavy products in your hair. A moisturizing shampoo will do the job just fine unless I was heavy handed OR went 2+ weeks without washing my hair. I will then use a clarifying shampoo AND follow up with a moisturizing shampoo. I have co washed and was disappointed so I know that it wasn't for me. I went to a salon and the woman told me that I should only deep condition once a month. Yeah I threw that out the window. The remark was funnier after she commented on how well my hair was. Sooo yeah and it was waist length. Sooo ignored. I think the whole debate is people trying to force people to jump on their band wagon and trying to make people even more divided. Educate yourself about the products, herbs, plants, oils, etc and what they do and don't do for your hair. Just because it grows out the ground doesn't mean that it's good for you. Peanuts will kill me at 50 paces 🤣🤣 Also, feel free to modify as the seasons change or as you find a better way. Just enjoy your hair and don't press it in others to do it your way...especially if you are pushing products 👀
I'm with you, Queen. I have a simple routine, which includes butter and oil. Not all butters and oils are made equal. I shampoo my hair every week, so I don't have build up. Plus I'm theorising that you can do the no oil, no butter if you have hair that allows your sebum to go down the shaft of your hair quickly....like curly hair folks. Me sebum does not operate like that, so oils and butter it is. LOL about the ponytail. I got one too, and I thought....this is sooooo big, 🫣. It has been tucked away for a while, and I took it out this morning, did a low pony and it didn't look too badly at all. Gonna wear it to work tomorrow...all week.
Nappyfu, you have become my champion of hair washing lol. From years back! I need oils and butter to maintain. But again, I've said get to know your hair and do what works best. It's a journey not a one stop shop lol. Thanks for the video all I heard were facts!
I love your view on the "no butters and oils" thing. Like you said, people took it and ran with it and it got horribly misconstrued. There's so much more science into what type of oil, hair/scalp characteristics (thickness, porosity, virgin, damaged), when you're applying and how much you're applying that makes the difference. I am a 4a/4b fine strand high porosity girl who's eliminated RAW oil/butters for most of 2022 and I've learned that it mostly impacts how frizzy my style is gonna come out and how long it lasts. An oil-free wash n go is my best wash n go, but during high manipulation like detangling and braiding, a little bit of oil helps. :3
If it works for them, then go ahead, but FOR ME, hell to the NO. My hair will not like that. I don't get why butters and oils are suddenly bad when they've been used for ages and worked just fine.
In the winter months hair will fry out like crazy and stacking more oil or butter in the hair will just further the drying without a proper routine wash day routine. We need to wash our hair more frequently this season that's probably the issue they're having.
I'm an oils and butter girl. I grease my scalp. I'm trying to drink more water. My eating habits are horrible. Exercise? What's that? Lol. Now a question as another single, whose been single since the cow jumped over the moon, you don't mind putting up a Christmas tree? That's the worst part of Christmas for me. Especially taking it down. That's really when I get in my feelings. I love your lives. All of you ladies are fantastic
the natural hair girlies are fighting 😭. But really, I've been natural my whole life, I have type 4 hair and stopping using RAW oils and butters on my hair changed my life. Wash days really frustrated me because it took so long but now its soo quick because my hair easily shampoos and conditions because there's no oil on my hair, it takes water in easily and is hydrated. I used to think I had low porosity hair until I did this. I've always had good length hair (about the length of yours pre-cutting), when I first heard of the trend I thought it was BS but it was lockdown & I was looking into hair methods to help show my curl pattern that doesn't require hours of stuff like shingling. I have a beautiful hair pattern when it was wet but it just didn't show after putting oils/butters or gels. But now it does with just shampoo, conditioner and gel, honestly. My aim wasn't to grow my hair longer but it did as well and my hair is no longer feels greasy AND dry because it's hydrated. These stylist aren't saying to not use products with no oils and butter but to just make sure its not in the first 5 ingredients (so in small quantities) and you can still use a leave-in conditioner but same rules apply. My hair is bleached and dyed so I use a leave in conditioner when I do braids as it does need extra conditioning and I wont lie I use whipped shea butter on my scalp 😶🌫 (never my hair) when I do braids because it acts as a barrier between the gel and my scalp as the gel I use (JAM, its the only one I like for braids 😩) makes my scalp itchy. I no longer spend near half the day on my hair. I spend under 2hrs from washing to styling and this includes hair masks/treatments because my hairs bleached. Anyways, do what makes you feel comfortable with your hair, I've been on natural hair yt since my teens (I'm 26) so I've seen the way oils and butters work positively for people. But if anyone resonates with anything I said please give it a go
Hey freinds!!! In this video I address the truth that no butter no oil method does not have to replace what you currently do. Using oils & butter and not using it can exist in the same natural hair world and be successful. Lets chat about it...After watching this video what are your thoughts? First off Nappy Fu you are cracking me up with that Car Wash dance!🤣🤣🤣 I stopped using raw oils and butters and my hair and scalp has thanked me. Not sure if you know but there is oil in the products(shampoo, conditioner etc). I’m not against oil and butter. I’m for what works for me. I’m also for peeps using what they feel works for them. Believe me I’ve been natural for 11 years and it’s taken a long time to figure out things. When you find a good thing hang onto it.❤️
I just knew you were referring to putting your tree up for storage 🤣. I remember you said you film and then put up videos in non sequential order. And I like the hair, not too big.
Sis frfr. I tried it and my hair started breaking, um my ancestors jumped up and said stop being stupid if it works for them baby girl it is not going to work for you. 😂🤣😂🤣
If you have product build up only do it for a short amount of time and then afterwards go back to using products that’s have oils and butters formulated in it and make sure to clarify your hair at least once a month. Some people who go without oil and butter hair looks dull
I feel you I feel people who tell you not to use oils and butters don’t want your hair to thrive 💕💕💕 I use oils and grease my hair is thriving so if it ain’t broke. Y’all know the rest lol
I followed the 30 day hair detox back in the days. I did everything religiously and thanks to the A&A (and the lovely community) I learned a lot, I have no regrets! However after 2 years of practice, I understood that it didn't suit my scalp and hair needs, and that's totally okay. At least I tried and I now know my hair needs oils and butters, otherwise it turns into a dry land. I think the narrative that because we have black skin, our bodies have the exact same needs to be healthy, is very damaging. I'm hopeful that one day we will all "exist in the same place" and be happy :)
Thank you! Also most products have oils and butters. Love them and ayurveda. I wash and DC every week and dust every 4 to 6 months. Health and length matter to me. Do what works for you.
Do what works for you. I was alllll about using grease and raw oils on my hair UNTIL I stopped using it and noticed the greatest difference in my wash and gos. I definitely feel like a lot of people just shut the idea of it out because of what their current routine is but just give it a try. And if you don’t want to try that’s fine. We don’t need to be arguing over what works for our hair. It’s not that deep 🫶🏾
Girl I don't know about other kinks... But I have learned to stick with the Basics. My hair loves Butters, EVOL, AND COCONUT OIL. BLK SOAP, BAKING SODA AND ACV. MY FAVORITES. I learned from your channel NappyFu. Much love TK❤
Exactly, it’s getting annoying. My hair loves oils and tired of seeing these videos and woman saying leave the oils alone, like people really need to read on how the oils and butters work for hair
Yeah I'm tired of people holding on to this no oils no butters trend because they don't know how to wash their damn hair properly.....😅 Let it go and do what works for you 🤷🤣
SPEAK on it sis… use things correctly and it’s not an issue. Anything you use too much of can cause product build up. Clarifying your hair at least once a month will help with that. If your hair likes it don’t worry bout what anyone else is insisting on you doing.
