Let's Speculate about the Lore in Elden Ring DLC

We actually know a lot more about the Elden Ring DLC than you might realize.
The name of the upcoming Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, combined with what we can glean from the one and only screenshot we have for the game, strongly hints that Elden Ring's DLC will take place in the game's spirit world, as mentioned in the Helphen's Steeple.
I thought I'd focus a few elements that a lot of the community and fellow lore hunters seem to be sleeping on and offer some mostly hinged speculation about what we can expect from Shadow of the Erdtree.
For more information about the Helphen, I'd highly recommend this video from‪@CrunchyVideos‬ • ELDEN RING LORE: The H...

I've been thinking about how the term Shadow has been used in Elden Ring, and it makes me wonder if the second tree curling around the "Erdtree" is either the exact same situation we see with Malikith and Blaidd or something similar. The Shadows have a set purpose to both assist their assigned individual but to also to assassinate them if they go against the Two Fingers/Greater Will. Could it be that the Erdtree itself had its own Shadow assigned to it, and if so this implies the Erdtree would have a sort of conscience of its own. Assuming the above is true, then could it be that the Erdtree itself attempted to rebel for its own reasons, and as a result is being attacked/killed/punished by it's Shadow for doing so? I bring this up because Shadow is such a specific term in Elden Ring, and refers to a very particular kind of being. Though this does ask the question as to if a Shadow can be anything and not just a wolfman. We do have Vargram the Raging Wolf, who according to his armor set aspires to become a Shadow. However, this is rather vague as it does not specify if it is literally possible to turn into a wolfman like Blaidd, or if he just thinks Shadows are cool and wants to emulate being one. There are also the Bloodhound Knights who seem to fill a similar niche, but we never see inside of their helmets to confirm if they are human are not, despite their bestial fighting style and mannerisms. We also do not know if all Shadows are restricted into being wolfmen anyway, as we really only know of 2 of them to begin with, with both of which being in dire mental straights so its not like they would be decent sources of info on the matter anyway even if the game readily presented the answer. Either way, I'm super exited for the expansion and can't wait to start a new adventure in the Lands Between.

@@garrulousgoldmask if analyze 4k picture you can see the distinct shapes of eyes or sometimes faces, but still closer to eyes, so it indeed may be Deathtree. Btw have no idea why everyone calling it Deathroot when agreing that it Godwyn related or not agreeing with it, cmon, it has branches, it's cleary not a root or vine.

I figured since we burn the tree to beat the game. This is the post affection of the lands after the tree has burned and no more holy erdtree now, lands are drab and more darkness

As a Ghostflame and Godwyn fan I was holding back my hopes for Helphen. Omg I hope we go to Helphen. Or Crucible era is just as good. It looks like one tree trying to kill another tree for sure. It could be the Elden beast landing into the 2 trees to help out the losing Erdtree vs GreatTree botanical battle.

Shadow of the Erdtree = Crucible

I think the word "shadow" here is not related to the context we already have ingame and not literall, it looks more like a poetic form of "horrible/dark secret", as example "Shadow of Innsmouth" by Lovecraft.

That certainly could be the case! Though Elden Ring does have a tendency of taking story elements very literally (e.g. the Two Fingers being literal two fingers).

I think the term “shadow” comes from carl Jung's theory. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_(psychology)

Could that be mount Gelmir? I know it sounds weird and unlikely, but when I look at mount Gelmir, it really looks like a tree stump. Especially the tips of the volcanic section. They look like petrified tree limbs

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that before but it is within the realm of possibility. Mt. Gelmir is associated with the Deathbirds, which would be a natural tie-in for the spirit world/Helphen (if that is where the DLC is). And there are a ton of windmills in the Altus Plateau.

@garrulousgoldmask oh wow! Mt Gelmir and deathbirds are connected! Can't wait to find out more! I always thought maybe sky burials may have been practiced atop the mountain. Maybe it was a tree back then... But in order for souls to be returned to the erdtree, this tree had to be burned. With a fire that still burns hot in the volcano and signifies Gelmir's fury. Sky burial is an ancient esoteric real world ritual involving birds. I think there's more to extract about the volcano's fury, the ancient hexes and rancor and the existence of frenzy in the area (could the gelmir tree have been burnt by the flame of frenzy? The erdtree looks like a volcano in the frenzy ending a little bit). And this is reaaaally dumb but perhaps the serpant formerly known as prince Rykard (!) is a snake that used to hang out in this tree...? No that's crazy Also, I'm on my 2nd run noticing so many st trina's lilies by spirit springs, leading me to believe Miquella was Torrent's former master and the person riding him in the DLC promo. Sleep and death are closely tied in occult studies and hermeticism. So the spirit world is right up Miqui's alley! But for real tho Goldmask, next time you're in the area, check out the mountain through that lens! So many treelike features.
