that 2:1 ratio worked out great for me... primed up a big pontoon trailer and it went great... my first time doing it so thanks for the tips. Really impressed with the RustOleum primer too, I used 1/3 gallon for two coats of primer.
I’m going to subscribe because I have watched like 80 videos trying to figure out a decent mixture ratio to use with the rustoleum and you say it within the first couple minutes. Instead of making some 30 minute long video that never really says how to mix or what ratio to use Thank you!!!
Retired from paint shop two years ago but miss doing this stuff, loved it after a couple of coats and good rub down how good it came up , nice vid thanks
Needs painted on the inside of the feners to. Or, better yet, coat it with either black paint, or tar to keep the inner fender from rusting from inside out.
@@floridagirl9064what Happena if you don't use a primer? I'm trying to paint my semi truck chassis but I'm thinking of saving $50 bucks and just spray the enamel. It's pretty rusty tho
that primer holds back rust really good. The only thing to know is you need to let it dry for a very long time like about a month then recoat the primer with urethane primer before putting on automotive paint. If you dont do that you may have problems with fisheyes or wrinkling of the automotive paint.
It's only primer? It's more that. This gentlemen that's doing the work and spraying, TAKES PRIDE IN THE WORK. If the priming and body work came like he's showing Us, than the finish paint job will come out looking great as well. That's pride at its best !!! I can't wait for the finished vehicle. Outstanding job!!! 🤓👍 A++++ work ethic!
I used this primer on a set of rims for my '56 Beetle and then painted Rustoleum Sand Beige on top with a spray can clear coat. They came out great. I wasn't sure how the dark brown would affect the final color of the lighter beige but I rally think it made it "pop" out even more. Great product. Keep the vids coming bro!
In this day and time Rustoleum is about the only affordable paint anymore. Some of us can't afford to spend a hundred dollars for a gallon of automotive primer just for a daily driver.
I just bought 12 quarts of rustoleum at $1 each (found them on clearance). Last time I painted my Mitsubishi, it only took 3! Very affordable and reasonable paint
My reducer, hardener, gun wash, mixing cans, paint filters and mask tear offs cost 3 times what my rustoleum did. Kinda want the extra durability on bumpers though
Dude, the rust oleum primer that he use is better than those expensive automotive primers, I paint a cross member 7 years ago on my 4runner I use the exact type of primer on the video still holding strong after 7 years of daily driving and off-road.
Look into Rustoleum's Hunter Green for that truck. My uncle had an old 55 Ford truck with that color and it looked great! A lot easier and less expensive than trying 2 stage paint. Great work!
I don't restore cars but your video was very informative for a beginner using an air sprayer. I rehab old metal carts, cosco stools and any other mid century treasures i can find.
Thanks for the video! Excellent process and techniques shown to help others see how it's done right. Glad I found you. Will be watching many more of your vids.
Nice job. My only comment would be you might have gone a bit heavy on the first primer coat. The first coat needs some restraint and should really only be a very light mist - what they call a tack coat. After 7 min or so you can do a little heavier second coat.
If you use an airless/electric sprayer like a graco 390pc you don’t have to cut it at all. I’ve sprayed tons of different paint only thing I’ve ever done is add water on top to keep some from drying in the bucket as I spray.
Thanks for sharing. Fantastic info. I will eventually be using RUSTOLEUM to paint a very 'rough' 1940 Dodge pickup. Bad metal. Simply want it 'flat black' or brown PRIMER. You helped a LOT !!! Thanks from Canada !!!
Nice video i feel like once metal gets rusty it’s never the same again no matter how clean it looks. Rusty metal primer probably is a good idea if rustoleum makes it you’d think it’d be something they do right. Never tried rustoleum in the regular cans but as far as the spray cans the rustoleum regular primer and filler primer spray cans from Home Depot worked surprisingly well for me and only $7 and 9$ each. The filler primer dries instantly pretty much and took metallic sherwin Williams atx auto paint really well and really stuck to the metal underneath compared to some Upol primer that chipped off easily. The regular rustoleum primer was good too just needs to dry for at least 2 days.
Being that no bodywork was done, no dents pulled or filled, etc, I would argue that after the sanding it would look really good with just a satin UV clearcoat and nothing else. Also, why use the red rusty metal primer and not just the Rustoleum white metal primer since this metal looks really clean?
Do we have an update four years later how this is holding up? I am about to try to use an airless paint sprayer for the first time to do this, and I am hoping that the primer will encapsulate the rust.
Just curious why did you use a primer for heavily rusted metal on a parts with little to no rust. Was under the impression that rusted metal was needed for adhesion similar to Por 15.
I wondered the same, but I recently took most of a poor paint job off of, and wire brushed 99% of the rust off of an antique metal sewing machine table base. I foam brushed on this primer (chose it due to its color and feel for this specific project) and did have a little trouble with it sticking on mostly smooth metal on the first coat, but by doing a thin coat twice, it stuck great with nothing coming off while handling or wiping it clean. Black paint looks great over it, and I’m able to leave a few protected but “rusty looking” places peeking through the paint all while keeping it protected for another century.
I wish they would always print "oil based paint" on the front like the gloss black I'm going to use on my wrought iron railings. I didn't realize it and tried for just a second to clean the brush in the sink. Not a big deal, but it seems like something all oil based paints would show. Guess I should have known or checked, but what with all the drinking, heavy drug use, and merriment I neglected to take that step. Oh well, that's life!
Thanks for the video I'm going to be painting my engine bay and this helps a lot. Question though how long should I let the primer dry before I spray the color?
Hi GT, i’m from Canada, i have a Dodge D100 1957, it need to be bring back to bare métal and prime + paint. M’y questions: Between the primer coats you sand with wath grid : And thank’s for the videos it help me so much!
Why to younger people put so much emphasis on the last word in a sentence? Also, watched your video spraying the truck flat black. You adjusted your air pressure settings at the compressor. A better way is to adjust it with a regulator at the gun. The length of the hose changes the pressure. The final result looked good thought.
Im about to primer my project car. Using resto tractor primer, do i only need to reduce to make it sprayable? Or do i need to reduce it and add hardner?
Will you spray Rustoleum color over that primer? I think that when you put down that primer, your top coat options become limited. That's the issue I ran into.
My understanding is the rusty primer shouldn't be used on a clean metal since the ingredients are made adhere to rust and not so much to a clean metal. is better to use WHITE CLEAN METAL PRIMER which is made for clean or lightly rusted metal. Any suggestion on this?
This is what I have been researching for weeks as well. Have you found out anything yet? I have a quart of the RMP And wasn't sure if I should use it on my cleaner metal. I have read several folks using the RMP on clean metal for years and topcoating with no issues. But, who knows ?
@@bugnut82 What I found, short term you will not see any issues. in a longer term between 1 or 2 years it will impact you job. If there is not enough rust, the fish oil in the RMP will raise and eventually causes bubble and mess up your paint job. so for $8 better to not use it.
FWIW I did rustolem rusty metal primer with a brush on the underside of my 78 Fairmont wagon about 8:years ago and top coated that with hammer tone rustoleum. It came out awesome. My experience with por 15 is that is encapsulates rust but it doesn’t really stop it and the cost vs value is not so good. I’ve also been able to go back and peel it off of stuff I had used it on. Fluid film or something like that works awesome as well for persevering an undercarriage.
hello I want you to know I was using a Harbor Freight spray gun but your Kobalt looks and sprays a lot better how much did you buy that for and how long have you had it and do you recommended for base coats
